Series of messages over 3 weeks.
Jesus is gathering his disciples… he team.
Matthew 4:18–19 NKJV
18 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Follow me and I will make you… holy? successful? spiritual? organized? Disciplined?
I will make you fishers of men.
Luke 5:10 NKJV
and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.”
Uh-Oh - he’s going to make us go witnessing...
Show you how important it is to fish,
show you the joy of witnessing,
give you some responses to people’s questions…

Followers Fish

Reasons why people don’t fish.
Joke - Boudreaux gets pulled over… breathalyzer…
The reason why I don’t fish is...

Because we didn’t know we were supposed to fish

After today, you will know that as a follower, we are supposed to fish.,

Because we don’t know how to fish.

Next week, we will learn more of how…

Because we were afraid to fish.

In our minds, we don’t want to be one of those… a typical evangelists… We don’t have good pictures of evangelists…
LSU - evangelist would shout the Gospel… Holy Hubert. You are going to hell. Turn or Burn. Sister Cindy was with him… You’re going to burn in the lake of … fire.
That kind of evangelism doesn’t help the cause.
Probably the person that’s most responsible for you coming to Christ was not that way...
Put in your mind the person who is most responsible for you coming to Christ. They probably did not blow up dynamite to get you saved, they probably cared about you and built a relationship with you and drew you to Jesus.
tell story of Jon elder leading me to Jesus… my friends invited me to CL because the girls were pretty… you have to use the right bait.
Honor the people who led us to the Lord.

Four reasons you need to fish for men

1. Fishing is fun.

It’s not scary, it’s fun. I wish you all can have this experience. There may not be any bigger thrill in Christianity that playing a role in someone spending eternity in heaven.
I have nothing but love, admiration and thankfulness for Jon Elder, who led me to Christ.
Luke 15:10 NLT
In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.”
If you had the cure for cancer, you would share it. We have the cure for eternal death. We have the cure for sadness, purposelessness, depression, lostness, shame…
2 Corinthians 5:18–20 NLT
And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!”
Explain an ambassador. We get to share the ministry of reconciliation.

2. Fishing is Necessary.

Not a game. Not an organizational thing. Heaven and Hell are real and people will go to one of these at the end of their lives. A lot of this is based on what kind of job the Church does. The message of Salvation, of reconciliation is given to us.
Romans 10:13–15 NLT
For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
Some people think… God’s already got this planned out. He has already picked who is going to heaven and who is going to hell. NO he didn’t.
Look at this.
2 Peter 3:9 NLT
The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.
The only reason He hasn’t come back yet is that he wants everyone to respond.

3. Jesus asked us to go fishing.

All Gospels - The Great Commission.
Matthew 28:19–20 NLT
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Mark 16:15 NLT
And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.
Luke 24:47 NLT
It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’
John 20:21 NLT
Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”
Acts 1:8 NLT
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Great Commission. We are a Great Commission Church. We believe God has called us to make a difference all over the place...
We exist for the World. why we support Convoy, missionaries. Why we do outreach activities. Backpacks

4. We were all fish once.

We were all in a dark place at one time. Many have thought about ending life. But maybe you like me, had someone who kept after you.
2 Corinthians 5:14 NIV
For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.
