Over the last few weeks we’ve been taking a journey through . We’ve been looking at the incredible and epic faith of the people that are included in this book. It has been mentioned before that the definition of Epic is - heroic or grand in scale or character. The faith of these individuals are heroic and grand. They stood up put their beliefs into action and it was through them that God did some amazing things for his kingdom here on earth.

This morning we are going to talk about a favorite character of mine, Moses. But before we jump into Moses’ life I want to ask you a question. Has anyone here ever been lost before? Or maybe I’ll rephrase that for the men in the room. Has anyone been temporarily unsure of where they where, but absolutely sure of where they where going? You knew the where you were supposed to be but had no clue where you were in the midst of getting there. I admit that I’ve had a few of these moments in my life.

This morning we are going to talk about a favourite character of mine, Moses. But before we jump into Moses’ life I want to ask you a question. Has anyone here ever been lost before? Or maybe I’ll rephrase that for the men in the room. Has anyone been temporarily unsure of where they where, but absolutely sure of where they where going? You knew the where you were supposed to be but had no clue where you were in the midst of getting there. I admit that I’ve had a few of these moments in my life.

One in particular stands out to me. In Bermuda I was a Youth Director and in the summers we used to take students to a Missions Camp in the US. So we’d all fly over, rent cars and spend a great week getting a chance to minister to inner city kids and people. One particular year we went on a trip to North Carolina. Now I’m a planner, while getting ready for these trips I would craft a great itinerary. This itinerary was a precise masterpiece where I had all of our time mapped out and so parents at home knew what we were doing and could be praying for our students. It was my unsinkable ship so to speak, we were going to stick to this schedule and nothing was going to take us off of it. I also should add that the students this particular year had requested that we be the first group to the camp, so that we had time to get the lay of the land and just hang before the mayhem of the week started. I, having this awesome schedule that was detailed and immaculate, was more than happy to accommodate these students.

I, having this awesome schedule that was detailed and immaculate, was more than happy to accommodate these students.

So the morning of us getting to camp I plug in the camp coordinates into the GPS and we set off in a caravan of 3 minivans headed toward the camp, which was no more than an hour and a half from the hotel that we were staying at. In fact we were running a little early and being so confident of my schedule, we made an unplanned stop at Chick-fil-a before getting to camp. The first hint of something going wrong should have been when we turned off the highway and were driving on more rural roads. But not knowing exactly where the camp was I put my trust in the GPS and kept driving. My second hint of something going wrong should have been when we passed a beach on a lake, there was no beach or even a lake close to any of the maps I’d looked at in planning for the drive to camp. But I kept trusting the GPS which was saying that we were getting close.

So this morning we’re going to take a 10,000 foot look at Moses life as it was presented in the OT. And we will see how his faith and our faith can bring us through situations that we face.

He didn’t have the upbringing that would be considered stable, he was raised in Pharaoh’s palace which was riddled with idol worship. Even as an adult he had murdered someone and ran away. He probably wouldn’t be first on our list if we were looking for someone to lead and guide the people of Israel out of bondage.

I know in my life there are times where I’ve let fear and the feeling that I can’t do this stop me from doing things. I’ve allowed fear to prevent me from doing things that I should’ve done. But at we have to think about what’s at the core of that fear. I know for me at times the source of that fear is that I may be disapproved of by others, the source of the fear is that I may not be in control of the outcome, the source may be that I just don’t know what the future will look like if I step out in this way. What is interesting in all of these is that the source of our fears are always internally focused.

In we see that Moses even told God that he was not right person because he wasn’t the most eloquent person; he was probably a little tongue tied and stumbled over his words and so he even felt like he wasn’t the right person for the job. And in scripture tells us, “7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

The bible tells us that we are not to fear. Why, because God is with us. He’s there to guide us, to direct us because he loves and cares for us. We cannot allow fear to keep us from living a faith filled life.

2. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking like those around you.

An area of Moses life that stands out to me that I really admire is that he didn’t fall into the trap of listening to those around him.

What do I mean by that. Moses has the privilege of leading a group of what started out at over 1 million people. That’s the amount of people who he lead out of Egypt. And as we read through the books on his life and their journeys we read that the people of Israel grumbled a lot. They complained when they didn’t have food and then they complained about the lack of variety when they did have food. They never seemed satisfied.

And you know what as I read through these narratives I thought that it could have been very easy for Moses to feed into and join in with this grumbling. He was going through the same struggles that the people of Israel were.

What do I mean by that. Moses has the privilege of leading a group of what started out at over 1 million people. That’s the amount of people who he lead out of Egypt. And as we read through the books on his life and their journeys we read that the people of Israel grumbled a lot. They complained when they didn’t have food and then they complained about the lack of variety when they did have food. They never seemed satisfied.

And you know what as I read through these narratives I thought that it could have been very easy for Moses to feed into and join in with this grumbling. He was going through the same struggles that the people of Israel were.

And you know why I think it would have been easy for Moses to fall into this trap is because I’ve done it. It is easy to hear the grumbling and complaining of those around you and simply join in. To sink into the negativity and the feeling that you aren’t getting what you deserve.

With the Israelites they jumped into this sense of entitlement and they even had the nerve to list the things that they had while they were in Egypt. They faced torment, slavery and torture under the hands of the Egyptians and yet because things are a little uncomfortable in the moment things we're better there. tells us of their mindset, “Then the whole community of Israel set out from Elim and journeyed into the wilderness of Sin, between Elim and Mount Sinai. They arrived there on the fifteenth day of the second month, one month after leaving the land of Egypt. 2 There, too, the whole community of Israel complained about Moses and Aaron.

And you know why I think it would have been easy for Moses to fall into this trap is because I’ve done it. It is easy to hear the grumbling and complaining of those around you and simply join in. To sink into the negativity and the feeling that you aren’t getting what you deserve.

3 “If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt,” they moaned. “There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.””

With the Israelites they jumped into this sense of entitlement and they even had the nerve to list the things that they had while they were in Egypt. They faced torment, slavery and torture under the hands of the Egyptians and yet because things were a little uncomfortable in the moment they felt things we’re much better in Egypt. shows us of their mindset, “Then the whole community of Israel set out from Elim and journeyed into the wilderness of Sin, between Elim and Mount Sinai. Even in the midst of all of this Moses was faithful and he stood strong in the midst of this opposition. Unlike Moses I’m a fixer. My personal temperament is to jump into situations looking to find a solution to the problem at hand. It is something that I’ve actively had to work on in my life. And I think that is something that every believer must actively work on. Relinquishing control and allowing God to guide our lives.

And you know what we see time and time again God providing for the people of Israel. When they complained about their enemies, we see God parting the Red Sea to give them victory. When they complained and worried about food, we see God give them manna from heaven. When they complained and worried about water, God causes water to flow from a rock. God keeps providing for them and we see them never fully resting in the knowledge that God will care for their needs.

Jesus tells us in , “28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.””

This is our marching orders. We can listen to the grumbling and the complaints from the world around us or we can trust Jesus and do what he says and join in with him. We can give him all our worries, concerns and the things that plague us and rest in Him. And you know what we will be happier and more content.

So we see that fear shouldn’t hold us back and worry and the perceptions of people shouldn’t hold us back and we also see in Moses’ like that he didn’t allow how he ended to hold him back!

3. Moses didn’t even end well, from our standard

From our earthly perspective we would probably look at Moses’ life and say that he didn’t finish well because he didn’t get to be a part of people entering into the promise land. He didn’t accomplish his goals so he didn’t finish well.

gives us a glimpse of the end of Moses’ life. This chapter shows us that God takes Moses up and gives him the view of all the land that he promised the people. The land that he promised to his ancestors. He reaffirms to Moses that he won’t get to enter into this land because he didn’t follow a command given by God. From what I’ve read I don’t think that Moses was happy about not being able to enter into the promised land but I get the sense that he understood and accepted the consequences of his actions.

In fact he continued on and was obedient to what God had called him to; which was to lead the people into the Promised Land. He didn’t waiver from his calling, he didn’t stop what he was doing because the result wasn’t what he wanted. He didn’t let this waiver his faith and trust in God. And we see this as he was still in close fellowship with God well into his old age.

And in this he didn’t shirk his responsibilities now that things didn’t pan out the way that he wanted. In fact he continued on and was obedient to what God had called him to; which was to lead the people into the Promised Land. In our lives things are not going to go as we planned. We will face difficult moments. We will feel like the world is crumbling around us at times. But I want to encourage you to trust in Jesus, trust in the Lord. Life here on this earth will suck. But as a believer when we consider our future and where we are going life doesn’t stop when we die. We look forward to the eternal glory that we will face. And you know what I believe that when we get to heaven and we get to sit down with Moses, maybe over coffee, we will hear from him that it was all worth it. The fact that he didn’t enter the promised land pails in comparison to the glory that he experienced when he saw God face to face when he left this earth.

Tim Keller quotes his wife Kathy when he says, “While God may not protect you from every bad thing that might, has, or could happen to you - ultimately through the resurrection, you are safe.” Why because through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ we have access to God and eternal life. Jesus tells Martha in , “25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.”

I don’t know about you but that is comforting. It doesn’t end here. We are to be obedient and faithful no matter what. In the good and the bad. Jesus calls us to a faithful life no matter what.

God used this man who didn’t have the perfect upbringing, who was flawed and by his own estimation wasn’t the right person for the task at hand to do great things for his kingdom here on earth. Why? Because in all of this Moses was faithful. He was obedient and sought out the Lord.
