Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Taming the tongue
James
as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
A. Avoid all Corrupting Talk
-Swearing, lying, gossiping, harsh words, etc.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
B. Our Speech indicates our hearts
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.
2. Build up and Encourage
A. Our words have power
Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
and those who love it will eat its fruits.
-We can either build people up or tear them down
-Stats about encouragement in the workplace from Harvard Business Review
-The average ratio for the highest-performing teams was 5.6 (that is, nearly six positive comments for every negative one). The medium-performance teams averaged 1.9 (almost twice as many positive comments than negative ones.) But the average for the low-performing teams, at 0.36 to 1, was almost three negative comments for every positive one.
-The phrase “Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is false
B. Our speech should build people in Christ
-Being intentional with our encouragement
-Easy to see flaws, but it takes great care to build people up.
-Facebook story, “A woman went to her pastor and said she was going to leave the church. The church was filled with to many hippocrites. People made fun of others, played on their cell phones during sermons and her list went on. The pastor challenged her before she left to fill two cups up with water to the rim and walk a lap around the sanctuary and not spilling a drop. When she finished he asked the woman if she say anyone doing any of the things she had complained about. She responded no I was to focused on the water.”
3. A Goal of Grace
A. Our speech should point to Christ
B. Be gracious as Christ was gracious
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
-Is someone built up or encouraged after I speak with them?
-Is that person closer to God after I speak with them?
