“Wise beyond his years!”

Have you ever heard that one, “he’s wise beyond his years.?” Or maybe something similar. Tonight we are going to look at biblical wisdom. It makes you biblically wise, because it is biblically provided, in turn it makes you biblically secure.
“Wisdom comes with age”
Is that a true statement? When you think about wisdom, what do you think about?
Is that a true statement?

Biblically Wise

The light of wisdom can be found in the scripture so may we use the scripture to help illuminate true wisdom.
Get Wisdom (Pro1:2-3, 7, 20)
Proverbs 1:2–3 NASB95
2 To know wisdom and instruction, To discern the sayings of understanding, 3 To receive instruction in wise behavior, Righteousness, justice and equity;
What is the reason to get wisdom?
Proverbs 1:7 NASB95
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
What is the fear of the Lord?
Proverbs 1:20 NASB95
20 Wisdom shouts in the street, She lifts her voice in the square;
So get wisdom so you can discern and receive instruction. Do it so that you may know the fear of the Lord. For fools despise wisdom and understanding and we don’t want to be a fool
Don’t be a fool
Get wisdom from the proper source (Pro2:1-8)
Proverbs 2:1–2 NASB95
1 My son, if you will receive my words And treasure my commandments within you, 2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding;
Proverbs 2:3–4 NASB95
3 For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding; 4 If you seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Proverbs 2:5–6 NASB95
5 Then you will discern the fear of the Lord And discover the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2:7–8 NASB95
7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 Guarding the paths of justice, And He preserves the way of His godly ones.
So how do you get wisdom? (v.2)
Where do you get wisdom knowledge and understanding? (v.6)
Who gets it? (v.7)
What are the results of wisdom (v.8)?
Benefit of wisdom (Pro3:13)
Proverbs 3:13 NASB95
13 How blessed is the man who finds wisdom And the man who gains understanding.
What are the benefits of the one who finds wisdom?
Acquisition of wisdom (Pro4:5-7)
Proverbs 4:5 NASB95
5 Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding! Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
Proverbs 4:7 NASB95
7 “The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your acquiring, get understanding.
Pro4:5
What are we to do? We are to acquire it, as well as understanding
Promise of wisdom (Pro8:17)
Proverbs 8:17 NASB95
17 “I love those who love me; And those who diligently seek me will find me.
the “me” is wisdom, if you look for it, you will find it.
So, if lacking, ask for it (Jam1:5)
James 1:5 NASB95
5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Biblically Provided

Glorious riches are found in Christ Jesus as noted in Eph1:1-14, part of those riches is wisdom. Glorious riches received by faith.
Predetermined riches, predetermined blessings, with predetermined results (Eph1:3-4)
Paul tells of the glorious riches we receive by faith and the results of it.
Glorious ri
Ephesians 1:3 NASB95
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
He goes on to tell us what we are to do with our faith
Ephesians 1:4 NASB95
4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love
What are we to be? (Holy, blameless, and do it before Him)
This all leads to Paul’s prayer, bringing us back to wisdom) (Eph1:17-21)
To keep in context we need to look at all the prayer
Ephesians 1:17–18 NASB95
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
Ephesians 1:15–16 NASB95
15 For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers;
Ephesians 1:1–16 NASB95
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are at Ephesus and who are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight 9 He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him 10 with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth. In Him 11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, 12 to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory. 13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory. 15 For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers;
Ephesians 1:17–18 NASB95
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
Eph1:1
Eph1
Ephesians 1:19–20 NASB95
19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might 20 which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,
Ephesians 1:21 NASB95
21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
Eph1:19-20
Look at the prayer, what is it asking for?
Spirit of wisdom(v.17)
Wisdom in knowledge of Him (v.17)
so the eyes of your heart may be opened (v.18) and you can understand (have wisdom) of what we have in Christ Jesus (v.18-19)
Understanding (having wisdom) where this all comes from (the Father) (v.20)
Another prayer for spiritual wisdom (COl1:9)
Colossians 1:9 NASB95
9 For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
The source of the wisdom, in case you have not gotten it yet (Jam3:17)
James 3:17 NASB95
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.
but we need to keep in context
James 3:13–14 NASB95
13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.
James 3:15–16 NASB95
15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.
James 3:17 NASB95
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.
Glorious riches in heavenly places that give us wisdom and knowledge that comes from above so we can be holy and blameless, and that we may be secure in the wisdom, in the knowledge that God provides through the Son.

Biblically Secure in our understanding (Wisdom)

Wisdom brings understanding, and understanding brings equipping, and the equipping brings about responsibility (you know, application)
Biblically secure when we know our part (2Tim3:14-17)
2 Timothy 3:14–15 NASB95
14 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NASB95
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
What brings salvation (v.15)?
For wisdom brings the equipping, what equipping (v.16)
For what result (v.17)?
We need to seek it, we need to understand that our part does take effort and application.
Remember where we started tonight
Proverbs 1:1–2 NASB95
1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: 2 To know wisdom and instruction, To discern the sayings of understanding,
Proverbs 1:3 NASB95
3 To receive instruction in wise behavior, Righteousness, justice and equity;
Proverbs 1:3 NASB95
3 To receive instruction in wise behavior, Righteousness, justice and equity;
Wisdom is available, and we need to seek it for there lays the benefits of it, our salvation. Salvation through education (or you may say understanding, wisdom) not through emotions.
With the understanding comes the equipping! So you lack nothing!
Secure in all wisdom to accomplish God’s purposed plan (Col3:15-17)
Colossians 3:15–16 NASB95
15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:17 NASB95
17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.
What are we to allow (v.15)?
What are we to allow (v.16)?
What are we to do (v.16)
What are we to do (v.17)
What is the result (v.17)
Giving thanks to God who gave us the wisdom. It is God’s work; God’s wisdom for God’s people to do fulfill God’s good and perfect plan. And His plan takes you to have wisdom!
Seek wisdom through God’s Word so you can do God’s work all in the name of the Lord!
