Big Idea
Man in his fallen state cannot embrace with sincerity the full truths of Christ, nor come to saving faith. Only those individuals who by the power of the spirit have been drawn (pulled, dragged) by the Spirit will wholly with a sincere heart accept with entirety the truth of Jesus Christ (eat the body and drink the blood) with a sincere heart.
Cynicism towards the Message of God
Can’t hear or understand, the message it is foolishness to them
Jesus explains why they are having a hard time understanding 41-47
No one (Literal & Absolute) can come (has the ability or power to enter into, know, accept, believe in me)
Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?” (, ESV)
Can come (coming to Know) is a synonym for believing, trusting, coming to faith. We even ask the question this way in English, when did you come to faith or come to know Jesus
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” (, ESV)
There is no need to say this if there is a natural universal innate ability for to come. Here (come) is used to distinguish those who come to faith and those who don’t.
Vss 48-59
You must embrace all of Him
Spiritually eating his flesh and drinking his blood (Essence of the Person)
The Bread (body) blood (wine/drink) we see the symbolism in Holy Communion. It speaks to having intimate relationship at the highest spiritual level
So Jesus is saying unless people embrace all of me eat and drink all that I am they will never be my disciples. Those that eat and drink all of me will never die.
Natural Death vs Spiritual death
Israel in the Wilderness not everyone that ate of the natural manna was eternally saved. But everyone who eats by faith through the power of the spirit everything that represents Jesus will be saved
Benefits of Embracing of Christ
· Free from the Practice of Sin
· Free from Self-Condemnation
· Free from Eternal Condemnation
