-Good news is always made gooder against the backdrop of Bad news.
Then
1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand,
-(v.1) Paul tells the Corinthians you need to be reminded of the Gospel. The one that I preached to you when the First Baptist Church of Corinth was started. This tells me two things that no matter who much people think they know what the Gospel is, we need to be periodically reminded of the core principles of the Gospel.
Paul the tells why:
a. You recieved it, it is what gives you the power to stand, and it is the method by which I saved you, and am saving you.
What is the Gospel? The word in greek means simple “Good News”
What is that Good news?

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
Logos, (Greek: “word,” “reason,” or “plan”)plural logoi, in Greek philosophy and theology, the divine reason implicit in the cosmos, ordering it and giving it form and meaning. Though the concept defined by the term logos is found in Greek, Indian, Egyptian, and Persian philosophical and theological systems, it became particularly significant in Christian writings and doctrines to describe or define the role of Jesus Christ as the principle of God active in the creation and the continuous structuring of the cosmos and in revealing the divine plan of salvation to man. It thus underlies the basic Christian doctrine of the preexistence of Jesus.
-Summary---all cultures from antiquity began to formulate theories about the cosmos or the created world. That word Logos has to do with reason, logic and planning. It came to describe the foundation of or source of the divine order of the cosmos.
-(v.1) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John says that “the Word” in this text is not a theory, nor is it a concept, as the Greek philosophers postulated. This “Word” is a person.
-(v.2) “He was in the beginning with God” Notice how John then gives us some more information about “the Word” by using the personal pronoun “He” as if he did not make it clear in the first text. He tells us that this “He” was eternal, and he was in perfect fellowship with the Father. Letting us know that the trinity is made up of person.
-(v.3) “All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being” John went from describing who “the Word” is too describing what he did. He is the effectual cause of the whole created order. He is the vessel through which “all things came into being” John is preaching now. This Word is the creature, and sustainer of the immaterial and material world.

14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
-(v.14) and “The Word” became flesh---the immaterial took on material, the supernatural took on the natural. El Shaddai, Jehovah Jirer, Jehovah Nissi, Jehovah Saboath, Jehovah Shalom, Jehovah Tsidkenu, The King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the Most High God put on humanity with all of it’s weaknesses. This is not an exchange of his nature to a human nature. This is an addition to his God Nature making him the only person who has two natures. Both God & Man house in an earthen vessel of flesh.
-(v.14) “and dwelt among us” That word “dwelt” means-he lived an resided among us. Not exalted above us exercising his right as a King, but coming as a humble carpenter from the hoods of Nazareth.
Why would he go through such lengths to dwell among us?

15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. 16 The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
-(v.16-17) God gave man a garden to explore, and enjoy everyday with one restriction. Do not eat from the knowledge of good and evil or on the day you shall eat of it you will surely die. Dying you shall die.
-In Genesis 3:1-6 Adam and Eve were tempted by the Devil and ate of the fruit from the knowledge of good and evil. And their eyes were open meaning they lost their innocence....Guilt & Shame came. And that day they died. They died immediately Spiritually and eventually they died Physically.
-in the consequences God gave them and us some hope:

14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
-(v.15) “The Serpent” is a snake physically, but spiritually he is the Devil. God tells “the Serpent” I will put enmity(strife, contention) Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; God essentially tells the Serpent that their will be contention and war between your seed(the demons) and her seed(mankind).
-(v.15) “He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel” God is speaking prophetically about a future event. He tells Satan that there would be a “HE” that will come through the seed of a woman that would “strike” you on the head(deadly blow) an you will strike him on the heel(temporary) blow. This is the first announcement of “the Gospel” in the text.
-in Summary: God tells Satan that I am going to redeem man with another man. This tells us why Jesus took on human flesh, because God cannot lie and he bounded himself prophetically to keep his word.
-Let me give the bad news: The Sin of Nature of Adam spread to all mankind after this sin in the garden thereby making all of us “children of wrath” Paul helps us with this:

3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
-(v.3) Paul says that before I got saved “I lived and walked according to the lust of the flesh” because I was by nature a child of wrath. “even as the rest” meaning before Christ Saved me I was no better than any of these pagans that are practicing sinful lifestyles.
Jesus missionary journey to the Earth, had a primary objective and a secondary objective. His secondary objective was to save mankind from his sins, but his primary objective was to come and die on the cross to satisfy the righteous justice of God.

3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
-(v.3) Paul says “I delivered to you as of first importance” meaning this message I am bringing you is of the highest priority. If you don’t embrace this part of the message you will not be able to accept any other part of the message. This is the foundation of Christianity.....What does he tell him?
-(v.3) “That Christ Died for our sins according to the scriptures” Paul says this is a core foundation of the Gospel that Christ died. Meaning if you deny the Death of our Lord via crucifixion that you have just denied the whole faith. Notice the last part “according to the scripture”
What scripture? There is no NT at this point; So what is Paul talking about???

-You see the specific prophecy in this text

David is just described something that he has never seen. Crucifixion was invented by the Assyrians & Babylonians in the 6th century, then it was used systematically by the Persians until the Romans took it and perfected it in the 3rd century bc for 500 years. David lived during the 9th Century BC. He would have never seen what he is describing in this text.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
-(v.3) When Paul says he died according to the scripture he is appealing to the OT text as proof of this cataclysmic event.
-At the cross God satisfied his wrath, while at the same time he extends to Grace & Mercy to underserving sinners....Just ask the thief on the cross....
Paul says not only did he Come & Die, but he also “Rose”

4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
-(v.4) “and that He was buried” Paul the Theologian wants you to be clear that a real body was put into the grave, and that a real body was raised.
-(v.4) “according to the Scriptures” now look at Paul using that phrase again. This tells us that there must be a hint of this profound miracle found in the OT.
-Listen to David in Psalm:

10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
-(v.10) “For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol” David here is affirming that he believes in the bodily resurrection all the OT saints.
-(v.10) “Nor will you allow your Holy One to undergo decay” Notice the change in direction and he starts talking about someone else. He talks about a “Holy One” this holy one is the Jewish Messiah. And he says that this Holy One will not undergo decay. We know David is not talking about himself because his body underwent decay. Listen to Luke in:

32 “And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers, 33 that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘You are My Son; today i have begotten You.’ 34 “As for the fact that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’ 35 “Therefore He also says in another Psalm, ‘You will not allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.’ 36 “For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay; 37 but He whom God raised did not undergo decay.
-(v.35-36) During this sermon Paul preached to the children of Israel he quotes the Psalm rightly interpreting that the Holy One was no other than Jesus, and he clarifies why David was not talking about himself in (v.36) For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay” Paul says our Father David went to sleep just like every other OT saint and decayed, but this Jesus body never went through decay. He wasn’t in the grave long enough.
-In am going to go back even further to a saint that most likely was a contemporary of Abraham

25 “As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, And at the last He will take His stand on the earth. 26 “Even after my skin is destroyed, Yet from my flesh I shall see God;
-(v.25) Listen to Job talking. Job is going through the fire and he wonders if there will be an advocate, vindicator, and lawyer who can plead his innocence to God.
Is there one who can stand between me and God and pronounce my innocence?
-(v.25) He answer emphatically “I Know that my Redeemer lives” listen to the grammar from this text.....I know my—Champion, Mediator, Redeemer lives. this implies that he knows something is going to happen to his Redeemer....It’s like he saying nothing can keep my Redeemer down, and when he rises he will plead my case.
-These two scriptures make it relatively clear that the prophets look forward to a Messiah that would break the power of the grave exercising final victory against that great Serpent “Satan”
4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; 7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 8 and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.
-(v.4) Like any great persusive teacher Paul moves from historical proof to contemporaneous proof.
-(v.5) “He appeared bodily to Cephas, then to the twelve” Paul says he appeared to Peter and then to all the twelve disciples. He talked with them, they touched him and he ate food with them.
-(v.6) “After that he appeared to more than 500 brethren, at one time most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep” Jesus appeared to 500 saints at one time, and then Paul tells them many of them are still living. Paul is stacking up the eye witness testimony of the resurrection of Christ. “If you don’t believe in the resurrection go talk to some of the Saints that saw him” check their story out.
-(v.7-8) “Then Jesus appeared to his brother James, and to all the apostles” Paul only mentions James but Jesus may have visited all of his family because shortly after his resurrection both his brother James and Jude are working are serving the church.
Why would Paul go through the historical evidence first, and then the present witness who can validate this miracle?
12 Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
-(v.12) These Corinthians who were stoked in pagan Greek & Roman mythologies. They understood the difference between myth and history. They were placing the story of Christ into the Myth category.
-Many Death & Resurrection stories began to spring up during this time using greek and roman God’s as the character’s, but the story that causes those most contention among scholar’s actually predates the story of Jesus and is found in Egyptians mythology:
In fact, most scholars have come to doubt whether, properly speaking, there really were any myths of dying and rising gods at all! In the Osiris myth, one of the best known symbolic seasonal myths, Osiris does not really come back to life but simply continues to exist in the nether realm of the departed. In a recent review of the evidence, T. N. D. Mettinger reports: "From the 1930s. . . a consensus has developed to the effect that the 'dying and rising gods' died but did not return or rise to live again. . . Those who still think differently are looked upon as residual members of an almost extinct species" (Tryggve N. D. Mettinger, The Riddle of Resurrection: "Dying and Rising Gods" in the Ancient Near East [Stockholm, Sweden: Almquist & Wiksell International, 2001], pp. 4, 7).
-One of the most compelling proofs of the Resurrection:
a. The women at the tomb
-(v.4-8) Paul says “according to the scripture” meaning that not only does the scripture predict that the Messiah will Rise from the Dead. There are people living now that can give witness to the historicity of this miracle. Paul wants these scholarly Greeks to know that this story of Jesus is not a myth, it is not folklore, it is not lies. This story truth. This man Jesus lived a sinless life, died a sinner’s death, and was raised victoriously from the grave with all power in his hands.
This message of the gospel is powerful that it demands a decision, which Jesus invites you to make

9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
-In all these scriptures you see a consistent plea:
a. This Gospel requires a decision---neutrality is rejection
b. This Gospel is freely given to all who are listening
c. This Gospel has the power to save anyone
d. God’s has given a universal invitation to all
e. One must be willing to leave his life of sin to receive this gift.
-Many will say Pastor but I believe in the resserection.
Are you sure? Belief in the resurrection always leads to transformative change in the believer
8 and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.
The failure to receive this free invitation by God will have serious ramification because: He is coming back again

9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. 11 They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”
-(v.4-8) In these scriptures Jesus is giving his last marching order to his disciples. He tells them to go to Jerusalem and wait for the HS to arrive to empower them for ministry. In the midst of that conversation Jesus begins to ascend into heaven.
-(v.9-11) As they were having conversation Jesus starts to rise into the heavens and the disciples were staring at him leave. Pretty soon a cloud enveloped him and he was out of sight. The disciples keep looking. Two men stood next to them with white clothing on and gave them one of the most precious promises in the bible.
-(v.11) He told them to basically stop looking in the sky and hoping for a different outcome. He is gone for now, but “This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven” Jesus as you have seen him ascend some time in the future this same Jesus---Not an angel---but this Jesus will then descend to the earth in like manner. He is coming back to get his Saints. But that is not the only thing he is coming back to do.

-(v.25) Job says my Redeemer is coming to the Earth and he shall take his stand. Job says he isn’t going to leave me in the grave he is coming to get me, and to establish his kingdom\

-(v.10) All Angels will bow down at my name, All of mankind will bow down at my name, and all those in Hades will worship the Lord. This is public acknowledgement of him as Lord.

11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. 13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. 15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. 16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
-During the first coming Jesus came as a lamb lead to the slaughter, but in his second coming he will be coming as a conquering King to do at least three things
a. To gather his people
b. To destroy his enemies
c. To establish his kingdom on Earth.

26 “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
-So I say to know there are times that I don’t always so what I need to say in the most critical moments, but as I grow in Christ I am learning that there is power in the Gospel message to save even to the uttermost;
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
