Introduction

You know there are times we need instruction.
It might be as you begin a project or start to assemble an item. We definitely need instruction then, right? Yes. It helps us to pay attention to the “right way of how things are to be done.”
At times, we need instruction for the time ahead, perhaps as we prepare for a job or a task within a job.
I think about how I learned to change the oil in the car, or to do this or that.. it all came about with instruction.
Well the word of God is just such a thing. It is instruction for all we will face in life, and yes even in death.
It is designed to help us live and live well. It will help us live here and in the next life as well.
So lets look at what is said in tonight....
Proverbs 4:1–6 ESV
1 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, 2 for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching. 3 When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother, 4 he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live. 5 Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth. 6 Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you.

Proverbs 4:1–4 ESV
1 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, 2 for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching. 3 When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother, 4 he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live.

And then I want to share the last 4 verses as well.... verses 23-27
Proverbs 4:23–27 ESV
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. 24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you. 25 Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. 26 Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. 27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.
Proverbs
_____________________________________________
Now this is a great Proverb and it reminds us there are some wonderful things in life, but instruction is the best of them all.
Verse 1 tells us the very first thought.. Sons, hear your Father’s instruction and pay attention to it.
Proverbs 4:1 ESV
1 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight,
This particular proverb calls for people to have earnest effort to pay attention ( this is the truest meaning of the word in the text that is “here”.) of his (father’s) teachings.
There is a great thought here, as the children of God the call is for us to pay attention, heed the teachings, instruction of our heavenly Father.
The use of the word attentive, in the second portion of the verse indicates a major push, hear, hear....... with the goal in mind.
So that we learn, so that we gain insight, so that we might excel.
Here is a thought for you.... think of one thing your parent taught you that has helped you all your life?
Now think of something the Word of God has said that changed your life and thought process....
And as we move into verse 2, we see there is an additional command, do not forsake my teaching.
The word forsake is not carrying a meaning of forgetfulness… no. You cannot forget what is known in the sense of God’s word. The command here is that we not forsake, reject or turn away from these teachings.
God’s good teaching is something we cannot reject and find life, peace and the pursuit of happiness. To reject them brings consequences… for we will walk contrary to the will and instruction of the Father.
Verse 3… When i was a son with my father… The father was the one who was responsible for teaching their sons, the sons represent the next generation. So it is a teaching that is passed down through the generations.
The same is true of the word of God, we pass what was given to our Fathers to those beneath us.
Proverbs 4 ESV
1 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, 2 for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching. 3 When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother, 4 he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live. 5 Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth. 6 Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you. 7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight. 8 Prize her highly, and she will exalt you; she will honor you if you embrace her. 9 She will place on your head a graceful garland; she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.” 10 Hear, my son, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many. 11 I have taught you the way of wisdom; I have led you in the paths of uprightness. 12 When you walk, your step will not be hampered, and if you run, you will not stumble. 13 Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life. 14 Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil. 15 Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on. 16 For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong; they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble. 17 For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. 18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. 19 The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble. 20 My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.
Verse 4 is the Key. let your heart hold fast to my words. The heart is the symbol of the center of a person, it is their volition, who they are. and if the words of the father are centered there.. then you could and truly have instruction,
Now lets jump down to those last 4 verses.... read those with me....Verses 23-27
Look at verse 23
The word vigilance, has the meaning of above all or more than anything else…keep your heart…
The heart is the depository of all wisdom, and the source of your life and character.
Matthew 12:35 ESV
35 The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.
The heart is the first line of defense and the last line as well in the battle for the mind., for person
One thing we must do in particular is found in verse 24
Proverbs 4:24 ESV
24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.
So consider what is being said here, crooked speech is a false speech, a sinful speech.
and then moving on to verse 25
Proverbs 4:25 ESV
25 Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.
a person cannot get in trouble ifthey stay the course, or if they keep their eyes sent on the right point of life
Verse 26
Proverbs 4:26 ESV
26 Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.
We must give careful thought to the direction of our steps, but we cannot turn back upon the Word of God, only then can our steps be certain.
Verse 27
Proverbs 4:27 ESV
27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.
Avoid the paths of evil a life of intergrity rises before you like a good road. But it requires the attention of heart, speech , eyes and conduct
