The Christian’s Promise

Romans 8:1–4 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
no condemnation is the most important thing a person can possess in this world
more important thing a person can possess in this world
most freeing thing to know
when Ron passed from this life into the next there was no condemnation because he was in Christ Jesus
when he stood before Jesus Christ he was welcomed into Paradise
only those who are in Christ Jesus have this priceless gift
only those who are in Christ Jesus have this priceless gift
why was there no condemnation for him?
we find the answer in v.2
Romans 8:2 ESV
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
the cause of condemnation: the law of sin and death
v.2 to be set free from the law of sin and death
God to Adam: “in the day that you eat you shall surely die”, i.e. in the day that you sin by disobeying me you must die
we know that Adam did sin and brought upon himself and all of humankind the penalty of sin and death
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
they are not condemned who have been set free from the law of sin and death
everyone is born under the law of sin and death
this is the joy and privilege of all who are in Christ
how did Ron get himself in Christ?
Romans 8:3–4 ESV
3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
God sent his son to pay the penalty for Ron’s sins
by living a perfect life he fulfilled the law on our behalf
be accepting that perfect sacrifice Ron went from being under the law of sin and death to being in Christ
the condemnation of sin and death was removed and the HS entered into his life and made him a child of God
The Christian’s Promise
no condemnation for those who are in Christ
no fear of what will happen after death
the importance of a right attitude toward sin
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:12–14 ESV
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
when a person humbles him or herself and accepts and believes what God has said about their sin and they stop trusting in themselves and instead cry out to God for mercy
he forgives their sin

The Christian’s Possession

Romans 8:14–18 ESV
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
when Ron accepted and believed in the perfect work of Jesus, God sent his HS to live in him and Ron became a son of God
he was adopted into God’s family as one of his dear children
as v.15 says, Ron received the Spirit of adoption
benefits of the Spirit living within:
1. bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (16)
Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiven
speaks to the fact that though we have been saved we still sin
when we do our hearts condemn us and the devil accuses
but the HS encourages us and reminds us that because we are in Christ we are not condemned
2. leads us to seek after and call upon God
it was what Rick witnessed when the family was at the cottage and Ron could often be found reading his bible and praying
3. we become heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ (v17)
believers will get the same reward as Christ, raised to eternal life
he was given the sure and certain hope of an eternal inheritance
4. we are able to endure suffering
not worthy to be compared with glory (v18)
he was given the sure and certain hope of an eternal inheritance
Ron had no fear of death
Ron never complained to me
Ron had no fear of death
The Christian’s Promise
no condemnation for those who are in Christ
The Christian’s Possession
those who are led by the Spirit are sons of God
no condemnation for those who are in Christ
The Christian’s Possession
those who are led by the Spirit are sons of God

The Christian’s Power

Romans 8:26–28 ESV
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:
to be in Christ is to be accepted by God and to possess the HS
in spite of these wonderful blessings for which we give thanks every day, we are still weak
we are beset by our sinful desires, the attractions and allurements of a world that is fighting against God and the devil who is constantly tempting, accusing and condemning
sometimes our struggles are so great that we don’t know what to pray for
what happens when we find ourselves in such dire straits?
the Spirit helps us in our weakness
he intercedes for us, i.e. he prays for us
he brings our needs and concerns to God with groanings to deep for words
how then does God know what he is saying?
Romans 8:27 ESV
27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
God is the searcher of our hearts and at the same time he knows what the Spirit is thinking
there is nothing that is hidden from God so that when the Spirit brings our troubles to God he knows what they are and what we need
what does God do when the HS comes to him with our troubles and trials?
Romans 8:28 ESV
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Hymn: All The Way My Saviour Leads Me
often see this most clearly when we look back on life’s trials
The Christian’s Promise
no condemnation for those who are in Christ
The Christian’s Possession
those who are led by the Spirit are sons of God
The Christian’s Power
God works all things together for the good of those who love him and are called by him
If God is for us who can be against us!

The Christian’s Preservation

Romans 8:31–39 ESV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:
what conclusion should we come to since there is no condemnation, we possess the Spirit of adoption and God is working all things for our good?
since God is for us who can oppose us?
the argument for confidence:
Romans 8:32 ESV
32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
since God has given us the greatest and most precious gift he will give us all our needs
since God has taken care of our greatest need, he will take care of every other need
notice the benefits that belong to the believer because of this:
Romans 8:33 ESV
33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.
since God, the ultimate judge, has justified us by having Christ pay for all our sins no one can bring any charge against us
Romans 8:34 ESV
34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
Romans 8:34 ESV
34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
no one can condemn us because Christ is interceding for us
Christ prays for us and helps us through the indwelling HS
Romans 8:35–39 ESV
Romans 8:35 ESV
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
nothing can separate us from the love of Christ and the love of God
Romans 8:36–39 ESV
36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
if we are loved by God we are eternally secure
