Sermon Scripture
Sermon Scripture
And it happened that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the people say that I am?” They answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again.” And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “The Christ of God.” But He warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone, saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”
And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. But I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
Luke 9:
Christ has moved from presenting the Kingdom to Israel (it has been rejected) to instructing His disciples.
This is on the heals of the feeding of the five thousand (not by might nor by power, but by the Spirit/word…)
Jesus then has a private communion with the Father.
We are to pray without ceasing, always be in a Spirit of Ceaser
Who do you say that I am - (you) emphatic position (xactly what Herod had heard in the previous verses
not the time to announce that He is the Messiah - the Lamb of God.
(the first accurance of the Greek word die = an absolute must.)
“It is absolutely necessary that I go to Jerusalem suffer many things and be tried (put something to the test and reject- by pharisees and sadusees..or sanheedren) be murdered and be raised the third day.
- Jesus came to taste death for all
To major things in the death of Chrsit
Removal of Adams transgression
Christ died in the place of each of His own
rejected - aris passive - seems to suggest that those who rejected were directed to do so
All - appears to be the disciples
First class condition - there will be some who will come after Him
what is the cross - is it suffering? - that doesn’t seem to fit. They take it up daily.
Christ has just said that he will be cursed and killed - under the law “cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”. The cross is the only way that Christ will die. Matthew says that from this time on He instructed His disciples. Following what Christ says to Peter in we have verse 23. The scriptures don’t speak of any cross except that of Christ. Humanity always tries to take some part of it. All around Christ are wrapped up in a legal system that says, if if if. The cross that we bear, is a substitutionary vicarious sacrifice in our place. What that does is remove from me any merit. “What did you do” - nothing… “Why should God take you to Heaven” - no reason except for Christ. “You admit that God is more kind towards those who do good” - I do not. If righteousness comes by law then Christ died in vain. ( I died unto the law)
To deny self doesn’t mean that you wear old clothes or have not blessings…it is denying mans human ability to gain merit with God. I cannot do it - Jesus paid it all. Did you not die with Christ on the cross, being baried with Him and also resurrected with Him.
verse: enjoy your possesions
Whoever saves - working by his own merit
looses - looses in Christ “for my sake” there is no merit in that
The only way that one can be ashamed of Christ and His words is to drop back under law, to operate by own merit.
Take up cross could mean take away or remove: you can’t follow Christ until you take away what you are offering to God. The same word as weighing an anchor.
see the Kingdom of God..could be:
the transfiguration
the ressurrection of Christ
destruction of Jerusalem in AD70
not likley to be Christ return which hasn’t happened yet
that the elect will never die
when you trust Christ and become a new creation in him
pentecost
Some say John the revelator
Paul who was called up to the third heaven
I don’t know which one of those you think that it is…I think the transfiguration as it follows immediately in the context.
I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”
And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
