Temptation

What is temptation?
Where does temptation come from?
definition - “a desire to do something, especially something wrong”
We are talking specifically about temptation that leads to sin
not like a temptation to eat cake of something like that
Is temptation sinful?
Is temptation a sin?
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Even Jesus was tempted
Temptation is not a sin, but it can lead to sin…it all depends on how we handle it
Never let temptation condemn you!
You’ll be surprised what kind of temptations arise from your heart
Where does temptation come from?
Is temptation sinful?
External
“The Devil made me do it”
Other people (eg. cheating on a test)
How do we deal with temptation?
External
eg. friends tempt you to cheat on a test
Internal
James 1:13–15 ESV
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
God never tempts us to sin
We have a sinful desire in us…this desire is what will tempt us
When we give in to that desire, that is when we sin
Sin leads to death
We can’t blame anyone else for our sins…not even the devil
“Devil made me do it”
External
eg. friends tempt you to cheat on a test
How do we deal with temptation?
Recognize that it is beatable
1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
As Christians we have God living inside of us that is giving us the power and ability to overcome any temptation. It may be hard, but it is possible
Fill your mind with the right things
Colossians 3:2 ESV
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
If our minds are filled with the latest TV shows, music and all the rest the culture has to offer, we will be bombarded with messages and images that inevitably lead to sinful lusts.
The armor of God example
Walk by the Spirit
Galatians 5:16 ESV
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Our lives are surrendered to God daily
Find accountability
Galatians 6:1–2 ESV
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Why bear a burden yourself, when someone can carry it with you?
Don’t play with sin
Proverbs 5:8 ESV
Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house,
There is an old legend of a monk who, when tempted by the devil in an immoral theater, asked the devil how he could be so bold as to tempt a servant of the Lord. The devil answered, "What business has a servant of the Lord in my territory?"
If you know something is going to cause temptation, don’t even go near it
Playing a game with your siblings, and you start to get angry (Zach bball eg)
Being on a computer or phone in a private place
Listen to what Jesus says!!!
Matthew 5:29–30 ESV
If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
Sin goal is to destroy you, your family, your relationships, your friends
Wolf Analogy
What do we do when we fail?
The Christian life is all about one more get up!
Proverbs 24:16 ESV
for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.
Get up (Confess our sins) -
1 John 1:5 ESV
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1 John 1:9 ESV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
What do we do when we fail?
Sin in the life of the believer breaks the fellowship but does not destroy the sonship
Sin in the life of the believer breaks the fellowship but does not destroy the sonship
This speaks of a relational forgiveness, not a positional one
It seems that what the apostle John is describing here is “relational” forgiveness.
E.g. Son that sins against Father
The Bible says that we can grieve the Holy Spirit.
Sin in the life of the believer breaks the fellowship but does not destroy the sonship
Move on
Sometimes, especially when we make big mistakes, we feel like we have to linger on our wrongdoing and condemn ourselves and ask for forgiveness over and over. Almost like it makes us more spiritual
This kind of continuous confession for the same mistake is rooted in unbelief
Romans 8:1 ESV
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
We can’t even condemn ourselves…the one who has the right to condemn you doesn’t
Get back up
Confess
Move forward

13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.
15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

8  Keep your way far from her,

and do not go near the door of her house,

29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
