Introduction

Good morning, so glad you are here today.

Man there is no better place for us that right here, right here with each other on the Lord’s day. This is special, you are my family, my friends and we gather in the name and presence of the Lord to worship Him.

I never understand those who treat the Lord’s day as their day.... they cast it off and choose not to come .... not be gather and not to be a part of our fellowship...

Man, o man, this is His day and He has given it to us.. Why can’t we give a little back to Him?

Now today we are going to have a great day… Don’t forget this evening, we will eat and worship, it will be a good time.

But lets take some time and focus on our time together this morning.

Let me begin by asking you a question....

Do you trust God?

Why do I ask that question.....

Because at times we struggle with it… Listen to this thought, it is one I’ve stated before..

We trust God with our salvation… which is of the utmost importance, but people tend to struggle with God day to day…

Where he is leading? What is he desiring to do with my life? Can I really do that.. ??

And I want to challenge you today to say this… I can trust where He is leading...

If you doubt that… in any way, or have any reservations… then something is off in your life,

Let me share this passage with you....

, and lets find verse 6

Hebrews 11:6 ESV

6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Now I have shared this verse with you to remind you of a simple truth, you must have faith if you are going to follow the Lord.

And likewise, if you don’t have faith in God, in where God is leading.. then you cannot follow, and you cannot find what the Lord has in store for you.

Case in point is the children of Israel...

God had made ac covenant with Abraham… he promised him a people and a land. Now after hundreds of later, God has brought the children of Israel up out of the land of Egypt, out of the suffering of their bondage ....

And now God has brought them to the end of the promised land…The land of their inheritance… all they is required if faith to reach out and take it.

So Lets look at and

1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. 2 It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. 3 In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them, 4 after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in Edrei. 5 Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law, saying, 6 “The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. 7 Turn and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negeb and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. 8 See, I have set the land before you. Go in and take possession of the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.’ 9 “At that time I said to you, ‘I am not able to bear you by myself. 10 The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as numerous as the stars of heaven. 11 May the Lord, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he has promised you! 12 How can I bear by myself the weight and burden of you and your strife? 13 Choose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ 14 And you answered me, ‘The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’ 15 So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and set them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers, throughout your tribes. 16 And I charged your judges at that time, ‘Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him. 17 You shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God’s. And the case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’ 18 And I commanded you at that time all the things that you should do. 19 “Then we set out from Horeb and went through all that great and terrifying wilderness that you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us. And we came to Kadesh-barnea. 20 And I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. 21 See, the Lord your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has told you. Do not fear or be dismayed.’ 22 Then all of you came near me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, that they may explore the land for us and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up and the cities into which we shall come.’ 23 The thing seemed good to me, and I took twelve men from you, one man from each tribe. 24 And they turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the Valley of Eshcol and spied it out. 25 And they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land and brought it down to us, and brought us word again and said, ‘It is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us.’ 26 “Yet you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. 27 And you murmured in your tents and said, ‘Because the Lord hated us he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to give us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28 Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, “The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.” ’ 29 Then I said to you, ‘Do not be in dread or afraid of them. 30 The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the Lord your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ 32 Yet in spite of this word you did not believe the Lord your God, 33 who went before you in the way to seek you out a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go. 34 “And the Lord heard your words and was angered, and he swore, 35 ‘Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers, 36 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it, and to him and to his children I will give the land on which he has trodden, because he has wholly followed the Lord!’ 37 Even with me the Lord was angry on your account and said, ‘You also shall not go in there. 38 Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall enter. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. 39 And as for your little ones, who you said would become a prey, and your children, who today have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there. And to them I will give it, and they shall possess it. 40 But as for you, turn, and journey into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea.’ 41 “Then you answered me, ‘We have sinned against the Lord. We ourselves will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And every one of you fastened on his weapons of war and thought it easy to go up into the hill country. 42 And the Lord said to me, ‘Say to them, Do not go up or fight, for I am not in your midst, lest you be defeated before your enemies.’ 43 So I spoke to you, and you would not listen; but you rebelled against the command of the Lord and presumptuously went up into the hill country. 44 Then the Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you as bees do and beat you down in Seir as far as Hormah. 45 And you returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord did not listen to your voice or give ear to you. 46 So you remained at Kadesh many days, the days that you remained there.

So lets begin.... right off the bat, we must see the command God had given to the people...

1. The Command of God

Everything begins with the command of God my friends.

For the children of Israel, God had brought them out of the land of their bondage and their suffering,. He had paralyzed and broke the Egyptians to the point they gave gold and silver to the children of Israel as they left their homes.

God had shown the people his might, his strength and his power.... and now he has led this people across the wilderness, to the edge of the promised land.

And he tells them to enter

Look back at : Verse 8

Deuteronomy 1:21 ESV

21 See, the Lord your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has told you. Do not fear or be dismayed.’

Deuteronomy 1:8 ESV

8 See, I have set the land before you. Go in and take possession of the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.’

The land of promise, come and take, come and enjoy, come and be blessed.. receive what I have promised you....

Man, can you think of anything more special, more wonderful.... NO...

What God has promised he is not giving them....

Friends that is a direct parallel to our life. God has promised something wonderful, life everlasting.....

Q. Are you ready to take hold of it?

And if you sad no… why?

Now I do not mean go and drink the cool-aid and get it now.. I just mean have you made Jesus the Lord or your life, and heaven is not your home?

If not … what is stopping you?

Now, take it one step further… What command has God told you to do?

He is trying to grow you, trying to make your walk with him closer, are you listening? Are you obedient? Are you entering the land He has showed to you?

My friends, God only tells us to do what he knows we are ready for… do you believe that…?

Do you believe He has prepared your way?

Now let us move on to the second point......

2. A People of Doubt

Think about this my friends, doubt will never allow you to have success. Instead, the devil will use doubt to keep you from achieving the place, the position, the opportunity God has prepared for you.

? What Command Has God told us About

In this case, the children of Israel are there on the edge of the promised land, they are on the edge of receiving all that God has promised them, that He made a covenant with Abraham about....

And here on the edge of the most beautiful day .... it clouds over with doubt as they people respond halfheartedly toward God.

Listen again to Deuteronomy 1:8

Deuteronomy 1:8 ESV

God called them, prepared them to entered the Land, and He would give it over to them. He would do this...

AND here is the the truth of the matter, God would do this… not them. They just had to move forward and watch God at work.

Just as He released them in Egypt, Just as He had took them through the Red Sea on dry Land, Just as He killed Pharaoh and his army. Just as He fed them and gave them water…

God has done everything for them.. but yet they still doubt

And so the people said...

Look at Deuteronomy 1:22

Numbers 13:21 ESV

21 So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-hamath.

Numbers 13:22 ESV

22 They went up into the Negeb and came to Hebron. Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

Deuteronomy 1:22 ESV

22 Then all of you came near me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, that they may explore the land for us and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up and the cities into which we shall come.’

Do you see it, God said enter and they said lets send in the spies… They didn’t trust the Word of the Lord, they had to see for themselves.

Now God allowed it..

This is what we see in Numbers 13

Numbers 13:1–3 ESV

Please understand , we see from the Scriptures that the will of God involves three aspects. A. His perfect will,

B. His permissive will

C. And then there is out of the will of God.

Let me give you some examples.....

It was God’s will for the Children of Israel to be under his will and rule His is His perfect will, but he allowed them to choose and have an earthy king, His permissive will.

He warned them of the dangers and cost… but he allowed them to have a king, and he anointed Saul as their king. And Sual was disobedient and the throne was stripped from him.

1 Samuel 8:7 ESV

7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.

Saul would later disobey God judge, Samuel and thus he would place himself in disobedience and outside of God’s will...

1 Samuel 15:21–22 ESV

21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.” 22 And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

Saul would later disobey God judge, Samuel and thus he would place himself in disobedience and outside of God’s will....

So God allowed them to send Spies into the land of Canaan, but it was not his perfect will, no…instead God desired that they just follow His command and enter into the land he had promised to them, that he has prepared for them.

God allowed it because they were the people of doubt....

So the spies when out in response to the doubt of the people.

Now let me ask you … are you a person of doubt?

Or are you a person who has faith to follow God where He is leading you....

Which one are you today… God knows.... Do you know who you are?

Now.... if you re a doubter..... what can you do to change it.

So let me share this one last thought with you today…

3. A Day of Opportunity Lost....

Have you ever handled a situation so poorly that you lost a valuable opportunity in the process?

It might have been a interview for a job, a promotion or an opportunity to share your faith with a person or a group… Opportunities lost is a terrible place to find yourself.... for you see the problem but you cannot do anything to change it.

You wish you could do it all over again, but to no avail.

This is truly the place of the children of Israel....

So lets examine some of the texts..

Numbers 13:17–20 ESV

17 Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up into the Negeb and go up into the hill country, 18 and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many, 19 and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds, 20 and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.

So the spies went, and they searched out the land. Caleb and Joshua was with them.. and they saw a land that was flowing in abundance, full of milk and honey, lush vegetation like grapes so plentiful and large that two men could only carry a branch of the fruit… and you can see that in .

After 40 days, verse 25 they returned to Moses and Aaron and gave a discouraging report.

Look at verses 27-29

Numbers 13:27–29 ESV

27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”

Friends it is just as the lord told us, it is a good land, but the people are strong, the cities are fortified and besides all of this, the descendants of Anak, are there..

Now who are the descendants of Anak… there is a lot of thought there.. Verse 33 ties them people back to and there is a lot of speculation.

You will have to research this for yourself, because there is a lot of stuff here… Could these be a by-product of angles and humans, could these be people of history, large, tall giant like who ruled will… I am not going to spend time here.

What matters here, these people are so large, tall and strong… they said we are grass hoppers before them…

Numbers 13:

There report was discouraging,they looked at everything they could not do.. it is such a good land but there is no way we can overcome and take this land for ourselves. Yet they never considered God...

Man.. such doubt… God is telling them to go and the people (except for Joshua and Caleb) are telling them there is no way we can overcome...

Here is a great question my friends, can you trust yourself or can you trust God. Which one is right, true and all powerful? Well here is a clue… it is not us!

Verse 30 tells us that Caleb tried to direct them in the other direction but could not make them reason toward faith, toward the truth

The Poor Report and Punishment

Instead they believed a lie.

1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a chief among them.” 3 So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran, according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the people of Israel. 4 And these were their names: From the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur; 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori; 6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh; 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph; 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun; 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu; 10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi; 11 from the tribe of Joseph (that is, from the tribe of Manasseh), Gaddi the son of Susi; 12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli; 13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael; 14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi; 15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. 16 These were the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua. 17 Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up into the Negeb and go up into the hill country, 18 and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many, 19 and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds, 20 and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.” 30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

If you look at the 14th chapter of Numbers, you can see how bad it was, they people lost any trust with God…

They blamed, God has brought us out here to perish, it would have been better to have stayed and died in Egypt...

consequences

Are you kidding me.. God never seeks to harm us but to give us life and life eternal, and abundant life…

Moses and Aaron, Caleb and Joshua could not believe the response of the people.. Caleb and Joshua tried to convince them of God’s goodness but they could not believe.

folks you are in a dangerous place when you do not the trust the wand and guidance of the Lord and in turn think you know better.

Listen to the Lord’s response in

Numbers 14:11 ESV

11 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them?

Friends the same question calls out to us. How long will we fail to believe even though we have seen all his signs and wonders.

You either trust God or you do not....

Ask yourself what do you believe and what do you hold as false....

You will either seize the opportunists God places in front of you, or you will miss them and never see, witness the goodness of God..

Which would you prefer?

Then you have to rust God.

Do you trust him or not? Which is it?

Numbers 14 ESV

1 Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. 2 And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.” 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes 7 and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. 9 Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” 10 Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel. 11 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.” 13 But Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, 14 and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people. For you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, 16 ‘It is because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’ 17 And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’ 19 Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.” 20 Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, according to your word. 21 But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord, 22 none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, 23 shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. 24 But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. 25 Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.” 26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 27 “How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. 28 Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the Lord, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: 29 your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, 30 not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected. 32 But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.” 36 And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land— 37 the men who brought up a bad report of the land—died by plague before the Lord. 38 Of those men who went to spy out the land, only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive. 39 When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly. 40 And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, “Here we are. We will go up to the place that the Lord has promised, for we have sinned.” 41 But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the Lord, when that will not succeed? 42 Do not go up, for the Lord is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies. 43 For there the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.” 44 But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed out of the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them and pursued them, even to Hormah.
