Main Idea: God’s character is holy.

Key Question: Do you really know God?

1. His character is personal. (v. 5-6)

Exodus 34:5–6 NKJV
Now the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,
Exodus 3:13–16 NKJV
Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. 2. His character is compassionate. (v. 6 - “merciful”)

But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.

3. His character gives. (v. 6 - “gracious”)

And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,
2 Chronicles 30:9 NKJV
For if you return to the Lord, your brethren and your children will be treated with compassion by those who lead them captive, so that they may come back to this land; for the Lord your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn His face from you if you return to Him.”

4. His character is patient. (v. 6 - “longsuffering”)

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

5. His character is faithful . (v. 6 - “abounding in...”)

keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,

6. His character is forgiving. (v. 7 - “forgiving”)

keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

7. His character is just. (v. 7 - “visiting the iniquity”)
