Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
-Part of a larger section that deals with the connection between belief and behavior.
Examples like "Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes."
is in the larger section that deals with the connection between belief and behavior. Examples like "Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and qwalks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes." are throughout the book.
YOU CANNOT HAVE BOTH HATRED FOR YOUR BROTHER AND CLAIM TO BE IN THE LIGHT...
Another example: (ESV)4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
-YOU CANNOT HAVE BOTH A PATTERN OF DISOBEDIANCE TO CHRIST AND CLAIM TO LOVE HIM AT THE SAME TIME.
This concept of belief and behavior carries into the passage. "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him."
-YOU CANNOT HAVE BOTH THE LOVE OF THE WORLD AND CLAIM TO HAVE THE LOVE OF THE FATHER IN YOU...
-What we have here is not just a bunch of dos and donts...
-Not just a bunch of rules to live by
-If that is all it is, then it is devoid of the power of God because it lacks the Gospel!
-The text isnt designed to just restrain our evil hearts, but to reveal what we really believe by the fruit that we bare.
I think the main challenge here is to take care not to moralize the text and instead demonstrate the Gospel-centric message. The text isnt designed to just restrain our evil hearts, but to reveal what we really believe by the fruit that we bare. As John says in chapter 5 "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life."
-John tells us the whole purpose of the book in chapter 5 "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life."
-Louis is going to preach from the text is 1 John on Sunday morning…but In keeping with that theme, I wont to show you someting...
-1 John is not the only place where believe and behavior or wedded together!
-Consistant testimony of the Scriptures.
-
EVERY NIGHT WE ARE GOING TO HAVE ONE MAIN POINT...
TONIGHTS MAIN POINT....
You cannot have God's grace in salvation and be in bondage to sin!
You cannot have God's grace in salvation and be in bondage to sin!

THE GRACE OF GOD
-Godʼs power unleashed on behalf of undeserving people
through the work of the Christ Jesus on the Cross.
-Its justifies us before a Holy God, but its work is beyond justification.
-It sustains us, strengthens us, it transforms us, it sanctifies us and ultimately it glorifies God in us.
