1 Corinthians 9:27 NASB95
but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
Impetus to mortification
Philippians 2:7 NASB95
but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
Did does this mean he chose it rather than being commanded by the Father?
Philippians 2:8 NASB95
Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Again it shows Jesus acting. He came in the appearance of a man but actively submitted himself in obedience.

Our Example of Humility

Philippians 2:9 NASB95
For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,
His being actively humble is the example provided to us. and then there is exultation

consider the members of your earthly body as dead to

Colossians 3:5 NASB95
Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.
If they are dead they light have no reaction to the stimulus of temptation. They are indeed not controlled by it. Any power that sin is given over them is given by the believer not trusting or seeking grace from the Lord.
A mind set on Christ, a spirit (and to be body) buried and raised to life in Christ (but that act is done!) you will be reveal with him in Glory. So love as if dead for your members are. Power has been taken from sin.
Greek: put to death what is earthly in you
Colossians 3:3 NASB95
For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
A done action in the past. It is finished and wholly accomplished. You are now with Christ. Walk in it.
Colossians 3:3 NASB95
For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

1 John 3:3 NASB95
And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Command to Follow

Hebrews 3:13 NASB95
But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
Here is a command to follow. Possibly part of 1 John 5:2-4
James 4:4 NASB95
You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Asking to spend on my own pleasures is loving the world. Gaining satisfaction from the world. Clearly these are not pleasures in God. This makes them adulterers and lovers of the world.
Thus am I. I ask at times for the God of God but I ask for more pay at work because I want more of this world. Not the needs of the humble christian life but for pens and cameras and shoes and experiences that cannot be taken to heaven.
That is loving the world and is hostility toward God. Oh that I would grasp that. Oh that I would see it is not loving Jesus. Oh that he would transform my desires. The answer is also not to throw money and helping others get worldly desires. The answer is submitting resources to God's direction and use. None of the above are inherently bad but some are extravagant. But the heart of the issue is that I long for them for selfish reasons. Not for growth in grace and love and service to Christ for myself or for others. The desire is for personal gain more than the desire is for Christ. There the desire is not motivated by a desire for Christ. Note this week the Lord provided all that was needed for this month's rent even when we didn't know rent was due. We knew of no need on our part yet he provided for it. Why? Because it has been our desire to open this home to two boys that we may share the love of Christ with them. Thus, God, knowing our need provided the money to meet it. If a camera was thus needed He would provide it. I would have a desire to make Christ known through which a camera would be needed. I have no such desire and I see none on the horizon.

Leviticus 24:5 NASB95
“Then you shall take fine flour and bake twelve cakes with it; two-tenths of an ephah shall be in each cake.

Mortification of Sin is Essential to Fellowship with Believers

1 John 1:7 NASB95
but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
We therefore cannot have fellowship with one another if we are not mortifying sin in our bodies. Fo,r if we are not mortifying sin then we are not walking in the light and if we are not walking in the light we have no fellowship with Christ (1 John 1:6-7) that we cannot have fellowship with the body with the brothers and sisters(1 John 1:3). Thus fellowship with brothers and sisters requires fellowship with Christ and that requires the killing of Sin (, )
Walking in the Light allows fellowship and mortification of Sin. Yet, one cannot walk increasingly in the Light if sin is not dying.
Titus 2:15 NASB95
These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

Mortification and Fellowship Linked

Titus 2:14–15 NASB95
who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
It would seem that the mortification of sin and fellowship with one another is inextricably linked. One, mortification of sin is required for fellowship with Christ which is the basis of fellowship with believers. Two mortification is to be achieved in and is to be encouraged and wrought through encouragement and repfroof in fellowship with one another

Lane on “your sins are forgiven”

Mark 2:5 NASB95
And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
Healing is a gracious movement of God into the sphere of withering and decay which are the tokens of death at work in a man’s life.
Lane
It was not God’s intention that man should live with the pressure of death upon him. Sickness, disease and death are the consequence of the sinful condition of all men. Consequently every healing is a driving back of death and an invasion of the province of sin. That is why it is appropriate for Jesus to proclaim the remission of sins.
Lane NICNT

Counted worth of the calling

2 Thessalonians 1:11–12 NASB95
To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
May God count me worthy of the calling he has given me; to fulfill my desires for goodness and the work of faith with power!

Oneness of the Pierced and God

Zechariah 12:10 NASB95
“I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.
They are separate but one.
Matthew 18:4 NASB95
“Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Whoever humbles himself as this child.
Jesus calls to the little child and he comes. He doesn't hum and haw with his toys. He doesn't walk away. He doesn't ignore the voice of Christ. He hears and he comes. He was a child. He may have been a little shy at first. He may have held to his father's leg for a moment but he went and sat down with Jesus. That is the humility. He entrusted himself and his fears to Jesus. He gave his time to Jesus. He put aside other thoughts, cares, and diversions of the moment and came to sit with Jesus. He did not say okay Jesus you are calling me so I will go give food to the poor in your name. He did not say first let me fast and prepare myself, he didn't say Jesus first let me put my money in my accounts. He wouldn't he is a kid. He did have a mutual fund and a 401k. He did have kids cares. He didn't say let me run home first and hide my toy under my mat. He didn't first say let me go clean myself up. He didn't say let me go get my dinner first. He put nothing before Jesus. And what stood in his way of coming, lack of relationship with him, fear of being in front of others, timidity of responding to an adult, he submitted to and accepted and went over and sat with jesus.
Genesis 12:2 NASB95
And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing;
I will show you a land and there make your name great.
Abrams name may not have been great in his home land but in the land that God led him to it was made great. Indeed where Christ is proclaimed his name is great. Not he did not say I would make your works great but rather his name. His name is great in that his works were not always works of faithfulness in walking in the promise of God. But despite that faithlessness his name is made great by the great works of God. His name is elevated amongst the people of God because of the great work that God dis. He rises because God rises. Abram increases because God increases his kingdom. And that is the very promise. "I will make a nation of people that number the stars in the heavens and the sand in the sea".
Note it is not even Abram that was made great but the new name that God gave him; Abraham. So it was not amongst his people, his land or even his own name. But God supplied a land, a people, and a new name.
And what is the greatness of Abram? Wealth? Riches? Wisdom? Power? Might? No, that he would be a blessing.
How, that he would go around speaking words to people? Performing great acts? Giving liberally of time, money, and energy? No, that those who bless him would in turn be blessed. That those who curse him would be cursed.
That he would be held up as the example, the forerunner, the first to live a life of faith in the Most High God. Yet, he would not do so perfectly. He would not do so in such a manner that produced righteousness but rather he would be the first to be counted righteous by faith. Faith in a God who would redeem. Faith in a perfect and almighty god who would be faithful to make him righteous. Thus, we turn to him and bless him, our brother in the bonds of faith. We look to him as an example. Yet, his faith was in the unseen the promise. We have the promise. We have the Son. The one who tread upon the head of the serpent. We see what Abram did not see yet v. 4 Abram walked in confidence with
Genesis 14:18 NASB95
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High.

Mark 2:21–22 NASB95
“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results. “No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”
Mark 2:24 NASB95
The Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

Jesus Loving Disciples

Mark 2:24 NASB95
The Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”
Here the disciples are attacked and he loves them by arguing for them. Putting himself between them and the attackers.

will

1 John 2:17 NASB95
The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
The will of God is here opposed to the thing of this world and the world.
1 John 2:15 NASB95
Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1 John 2:15 NASB95
Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
How does this connect to the command to love the brothers and sisters by following the commands of God in chapter 5?
1 John 2:11 NASB95
But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Do not love the world nor the things in the world.

1 John 2:15 NASB95
Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

not lawful on the Sabbath?

Mark 2:24 NASB95
The Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”
"The controversy in the present passage reflects the Pharisaic determination to uphold and honor the Sabbath"
Pillar
Note they are honoring the sabbath not God. They are trying to serve the principle of the sabbath not the God of the sabbath.
Psalm 61:2 NASB95
From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Psalm 61:3 NASB95
For You have been a refuge for me, A tower of strength against the enemy.
Psalm 61:4 NASB95
Let me dwell in Your tent forever; Let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. Selah.

Holy Spirit

Psalm 51:11 NASB95
Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

I know My own and My own know Me

John 10:14 NASB95
“I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me,
Those who aren’t his; to whom do they belong?
And all who are his hear his voice and follow. They don’t go looking for him save his voice call out to them.
John 16:33 NASB95
“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
Mark 4:11 NASB95
And He was saying to them, “To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but those who are outside get everything in parables,
Mark 4:21–25 NASB95
And He was saying to them, “A lamp is not brought to be put under a basket, is it, or under a bed? Is it not brought to be put on the lampstand? “For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it would come to light. “If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” And He was saying to them, “Take care what you listen to. By your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides. “For whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him.”
This is indeed all one unit. Just the Heading in Lane pointed to that and brought this truth forward. Oh what vistas it opens, knowing this.
So the Lamp reveals. Jesus is the Lamp. What is hidden gets revealed. This is likely not skotia as John uses it against light (need to read the commentaries and see) but rather what was hidden is being brought to life. This was from these verses intentionally hidden as all hidden things are. Note in John the darkness doe snot hide something true but prevents the truth from being seen. It blinds. Thus pushing back darkness there is not revealing what is there but showing what ignorance exists and it is truth that does the pushing and changing. In all regards John is about coming to know God.
Here in Mark, this verse at the very least (I have not taken up or looked for other uses yet) light is God revealing truth, God showing what he had not yet shown Israel or any others. Jesus is unfolding the mystery of the Kingdom of God to them - hence v. 40 "Do you not yet have faith?" as Lane says he is showing his divinity he is showing them God clams the seas and I am calming them for you - Jesus is the light that is illuminating the truth of the Kingdom coming in amongst them. He is the one who treads on the viper's head , he is the one who's arms hold the lambs of Israel , he is the suffering servant ; He is the one who will command the gate to be lifted up ; He is the double cure and much more.
Jesus though in Mark is not making this explicit by saying here I meet that prophesy and that one. He is demonstrating through these that he is demonstrating that He is the power to answer each of these. He is revealing that He is the secret hidden and now being revealed. In him is the fullness/summary of the Kingdom of God. He is the bringer, the fulfillment, and the manner in which the fulfillment can happen. He is the way into the kingdom, the summary of the kingdom, the messenger of the kingdom, the debt paid for entrance, the high priest who offers the sacrifice, and the sacrifice.
Thus His is the shining light that reveals the hidden secret and the hidden secret. Thus one must be careful about who and what they listen to concerning Him. Many are saying many things about him. We are to listen to Him. His spirit is set inside us as a guide. Because this is an intricate truth yet it is a plain truth. One can get it very right but one can get it very wrong. For if you truly understand rightly you will receive more.
Receive more of what? In the previous parable the word was the seed that Jesus sowed. Jesus is expounding on being careful about one listens, one hears words about the WORD. He is the light that shows the hidden truth in the word/seed . Thus to the masses he is saying listen to the Light for the Light reveals the secret hidden in the word. So, what measure are we to use in order to determine what we understand of the word? Faith(?). The next parable Mark wants us to see is about growth. We do not know how the seed grows
Psalm 37:4 NASB95
Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Isaiah 58:13 NASB95
“If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot From doing your own pleasure on My holy day, And call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, And honor it, desisting from your own ways, From seeking your own pleasure And speaking your own word,
Isaiah 58:14 NASB95
Then you will take delight in the Lord, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
Isaiah 58:13–14 NASB95
“If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot From doing your own pleasure on My holy day, And call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, And honor it, desisting from your own ways, From seeking your own pleasure And speaking your own word, Then you will take delight in the Lord, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Isaiah 59:1 NASB95
Behold, the Lord’s hand is not so short That it cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull That it cannot hear.

they (outsiders view of Jesus)

Mark 3:30 NASB95
because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
At least the outsiders view him as just a teacher. He is here, I believe, claiming far more. He is not just a teach to whom God gives signs and wonders as attestations of the Message he proclaims. He is working these from him by the power of the spirit residing in him. The spirit is not upon him. It is in him.
Mark 4:1–2 NASB95
He began to teach again by the sea. And such a very large crowd gathered to Him that He got into a boat in the sea and sat down; and the whole crowd was by the sea on the land. And He was teaching them many things in parables, and was saying to them in His teaching,
John 17:3 NASB95
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
Proverbs 16:32 NASB95
He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city.
Proverbs 19:11 NASB95
A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger, And it is his glory to overlook a transgression.
Proverbs 14:29 NASB95
He who is slow to anger has great understanding, But he who is quick-tempered exalts folly.
Psalm 19:7–10 NASB95
The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether. They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
Psalm 19:10 NASB95
They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
Isaiah 53:10 NASB95
But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
Isaiah 53:11 NASB95
As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.
Isaiah 53:12 NASB95
Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.
Psalm 32:7 NASB95
You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah.
Mark 6:50 NASB95
for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, “Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.”

looking up toward heaven,

Mark 6:41 NASB95
And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all.
Jesus is dependent on the Father to provide for the people what they need. He is modeling this for the Apsotles. Teaching them what they will need to meet the needs of the people. Thus, when their own great need comes and the wind is “against them” they ought to look to Jesus, when they see a specter on the sea they should call to Jesus, but they do not. How will they learn to meet other’s needs, well they did when they were sent out, but how will the learn to see their own needs from Him?

He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them

Mark 6:41 NASB95
And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all.
It is a miracle for the disciples. I doubt the people saw what was happening. It was to show them who he was yet what emphatic is missing from miracles done for the apostles: “Who is this man?” YET in a few hours that will be their exclamation when he again calms the wind.

baskets

Mark 6:43 NASB95
and they picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish.
Lane relates that the Jews wore a small whicker basket with them at all times for odds and ends and often to carry a meal. Interestingly the apostles didn’t fill their baskets before going to the wilderness: why?
Either way it does not seem they brought enough food for 13 grown men who are starving.
Would they have eaten in the boat? Did they assume Jesus would have another source or another plan?
Isaiah 25:8–9 NASB95
He will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; For the Lord has spoken. And it will be said in that day, “Behold, this is our God for whom we have waited that He might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.”

Ephesians 4:18 NASB95

And people think that his in light of can be healed and covered over or removed simply by showing up to a church or doing small charitable acts for others. That belief is the result of a darkened understanding of the true immensity of God in the form of the Christ, Jesus.
Isaiah 53:2 NASB95
For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
The problem lies not in Him. The lack of beauty is not his. We did not have eyes to see what stood before us.

after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.

Mark 5:27 NASB95
after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.
She heard about him and came herself. Note the one who told her did not bring her. The father brought her. She came because she believed. What about the person who told her. I can see her listening to a story, “Oh there is this guy who many are going to. He says some crazy things. I don’t know what to think of him but many are healed.”
She hears the declaration of the kingdom and her eyes open and her heart quickens and she knows, she believes, he can do for her what no one has. He alone can make her clean, make her whole, make her one again.
