Introduction
John 6:1-12
Though some time after this is indefinite, it can be learned from the Synoptics that Herod Antipas had killed John the Baptist (Mark 6:14–29; cf.
John 3:24), the disciples had preached throughout Galilee (Mark 6:7–13, 30–31), multitudes of people were curious about Jesus, and Herod Antipas was seeking Jesus (Luke 9:7–9).
So the time between the events in John 5 and 6 was probably six months.
This is the only miracle during Jesus’ ministry that is recorded in all four Gospels.
Compassion in God’s Provision
Joh
Seeing the need of hungry people.
Seeing the need of disciples to learn and grow.
v.4
--
the Passover Feast was to Palestinian Jews what the fourth of July is to Americans, or, better, what the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne is to loyalist Protestants in Northern Ireland.
It was a rallying point for intense, nationalistic zeal.
This goes some way to explaining the fervour that tried to force Jesus to become king (cf.
notes on v. 15).
v.5
In this instance Philip was the obvious person to ask: he came from the nearby town of Bethsaida (1:44).
Power of God’s Provision
John 6:7-
“God knows everything from beyond origin to beyond destiny.
You have _____ many years of sin tainted experience.
Why debate him?
God’s smarter!
—Paul David Tripp

So we see here that the creator also now has power over the creation.
“It is stunning to know that God knows absolutely everything. . .
His knowledge is unsearchable.
He is never confused.”

“Consume his wisdom and be thankful for the grace that rescues you from your own foolishness and connects you to One who defines what is wise.”—Paul

John 6:
Abundance of God’s Provision
John 6:1
Message of God’s Provision
John 6:14-
He did not want to be king, He wanted them to see the truth of their sin and need for His payment.
The real nature of Jesus’ kingship becomes a major issue in the passion narrative (18:33ff.).
The truth of the matter is that Jesus’ kingdom was like no other (18:36).
Jesus himself knew that the way his kingdom would triumph would not be by beating the enemy in siege warfare, but by dying and rising from the dead; ‘he would go to Jerusalem not to wield the spear and bring the judgment, but to receive the spear thrust and bear the judgment’.
