Rightly discerning between the essential and the optional—it is a perpetual problem for us all in this life. Yet, our trouble here is not limited just to our evaluation of this life but also of the one to come. How do we fix this debilitating discernment? While there are many factors involved, 1 John 1:1–4 at least points us in the right direction.
