The scope of Jesus Christ’s pre-eminence

Over all people

John 17:2 NKJV
as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.
See also ;

Over his enemies

1 Corinthians 15:25–26 NKJV
For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.
See also ; ; Paul probably interpreted “captives” to refer to the spiritual enemies of Christ defeated at the cross.

Over every power and authority

Colossians 2:15 NKJV
Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

The pre-eminence of Jesus Christ in relation to others

To other prophets

; ; ; ; ;

To the patriarchs

; ;

To Aaron and other high priests

Hebrews 8:1–6 NKJV
Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.
See also ; ; ; ; ;

To angels

1 Peter 3:22 NKJV
who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.
See also

To other lords and kings

Revelation 17:14 NKJV
These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”

Descriptions of Jesus Christ’s pre-eminence

He is the head

Colossians 2:10 NKJV
and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.
See also ; ; ; ;

He is the capstone

By so saying Jesus Christ applied this verse to himself. The capstone/cornerstone was the most significant stone of a building’s structure.

He is the Chief Shepherd

; ;

The reasons for Jesus Christ’s pre-eminence

His divine origin

John 3:31 NKJV
He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.
See also ;

His equality with the Father

John 10:30 NKJV
I and My Father are one.”
See also ;

His authority derives from the Father

John 5:22–27 NKJV
For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.

He possesses the rights of the firstborn

As the firstborn son has the rights and privileges of an heir, so Jesus Christ is heir of all things by virtue of his pre-existence and sonship.
See also ;

He has a superior name

Philippians 2:9 NKJV
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,
See also ;

He is the First and the Last

This title implies that all things are summed up in Christ and find their purpose in him.
See also ;

; ;

Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.
