In the creation story God calls all that he has created good except for one thing. Did you know that? God created something, or a situation, that wasn’t good. Here in verse 18 God says that it is not good that humans should live alone. Now, realize that the Hebrew here really means humans not man. It really should read it is not good for humans to be alone, man or woman.
So in order for humankind not to be alone, God creates animals and parades them by Adam to see which one of them is a suitable partner. None of the animals will do. So God causes Adam to fall asleep and from Adam’s own flesh God creates Eve and for the first time Adam speaks when he sees Eve. Yes Adam had the breath of God breathed in to him to live, but it seems that he wasn’t fully alive until he had Eve. His perfect partner. Adam her perfect partner. His perfect helper, her perfect helper. God created them together as coregents neither one subordinating the other, but as true equal partners in managing God’s creation. God created human beings to live in community with each other and God and the basic part of that community is marriage.
Jana and Blair I thought of you when I read this text. I truly believe God has put you together, as perfect helper-partners. You are complimentary souls. Apart you are two very capable, intelligent individuals. Together you are a perfect team put together by God. You are each truly bone of bone and flesh of flesh. And I have a feeling that both of you, maybe for the first time, felt that new life that Adam and Eve felt when they saw each other for the first time. Adam and Eve were both new creations, embarking on a life together on God’s new creation. You both are new creations, coming together in a new creation in covenant with each other and the Lord.
Just like Adam and Eve you need each other to be complete. Genesis does not romanticize this story. It is not a romance novel. The uniting of Adam and Eve is a very practical moment. Apart they are half of what then could be. Together they are on a journey, hand in hand helping each other along.
So this is my charge to you today, that you are on a journey that is not completed at I do. It is a process that requires work, diligence and sacrificial love. Just as Adam gave himself for Eve and Eve for Adam each of you must give yourselves to the other, in a covenant of partnership. Always honor and remember this partnership covenant that you make before and with God today. If you do i have every confidence your marriage will endure and be blessing not just to ya’ll but to many.
