How can a man walk with God?
How can a man walk with God?
Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
INTRODUCTION
Good evening, here in the book of Amos we find questions being asked, here in this chapter there’s seven different question.
Shall two walk together, except they have agreed?
Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey?
Will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing?
Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is set for him?
Shall a snare spring up from the ground and have taken nothing at all?
Shall the trumpet be blown in a city, and the people not be afraid?
Shall evil befall a city, and the Lord hath not done it?
What I believe here is the principle: An effect proves a cause.
You can not have two people walking together unless in the sense of the text, they have agreed.
Now in my title I am asking a question: Can a man walk with God?
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
Now listen to this: The Lord show you what is good and then He list something, do justly, to love mercy, but here what I want you to look at: walk humbly with God.
Now go back to our text: Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
God and man must agree if they are to walk together.
So with that said let’s look at:
And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
When we look at this is all we know about Enoch and there is so much more that if we was to spend our entire life studying on this I don’t think we could figure this out.
But what I want to touch on tonight is the phrase : walking with God.
Apostle Paul mention this often in his writings and it is as he is constantly thinking of a life walking with God.
We find this phrase being through out the Bible, walk with God or walking with God.
So let’s take the words walk together first: The word walk is so simple but yet full of suggestiveness.
Walking imply life, volunteering, effort, and direction.
Now think about this apart from life, there in no walking, and there can be no walking which is not done by volunteering. We can never walk anywhere without willing to do so.
We may not wish to go,but we will do so, it is because we put one foot in front of the other foot.
Walking is also the simplest exercise, this morning I walked for 2 miles, but if you are not walking, don’t exercise like that for three months and then try that you would find out that it is not that simple.
Walking implies effort and direction
We walk toward somewhere. Even if you walk in a circle, you are going round toward the starting point.
Now stay with me:
The word “together” is a simple and common word. But together means as a unit.
So if i was to read the scripture text: then it might be How shall two walk as a unit, except they have agreed?
But if we are going to look at the root meaning of this word, walking together would be to walk in perfect unity in all the fullest, deepest senses of the word.
So the question that the prophet asked was not: How can people walk together in an occasional or casual way, except they have agreed?
If it was just a casual every once in a while walk then yes they were need to just have a measure of agreement but if they were to be in a continual walk, a consistent walking together there must be agreement which is profound and deep.
This word agreement is to walk as a unit, two persons to walk as though they were one.
I said all that to get us to understand what Micah was intended when he spoke about walking with God.
You see, the concept is that God and man moving together as a unit, in perfect time and perfect rhythm then the two lives, being the live of God and the life of man must united and there must be willingness in effort, strength, and with the same goals.
So a man walking together with God is a man willing one will with God, working one work with God and journeying toward one goal with God.
So if you could picture this: It is a picture of a man moving toward the Divine destination along Divine pathway, not choosing his own way to reach the ultimate goal, but marching along the pathway on which God Himself is marching.
Keep with me, because this is a picture of man moving toward the Divine destination along the way of the Divine procedure in the power of the Divine fellowship.
This is a picture of God and man having a combination of resources.
Now understand what I am saying, This is God bringing in all His infinite resources and placing them at the disposal of man, the one God is walking with.
And this is man letting God who created him and gave him all the resources, abilities, and talent and placing them at the disposal of God.
This is the two walking together.
Are you walking with God, have you placed all your resources at God’s disposal?
Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.
This is God and man having full fellowship
In this full fellowship where man making his effort with God and God always making his effort to take man to his ultimate goal. Which is to walk with God.
In order for this walking together with God to work then we must have this agreement.
So let’s look at agreement in a deeper state:
The root idea of the Hebrew word Agreement is to fix upon by agreement or appointment.
So if we want to read our text again:
Revised Version:
Shall two walk together, except they have made an appointment?
If you take this word agreement which can be translate into appointment and the Hebrew word deals with fix upon.
But secondly
Then as you go thru the scriptures the word means to meet at certain places and a certain time.
Then I must go to:
Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.
Don't get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.
If we fix our eyes on the path that God has plan out and don’t get sidetracked them we are walking with Him.
Phip 4:8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
The only thing that I know that is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable is Christ Jesus.
And the only place to meet Christ Jesus is at the Cross.
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to His cross and crucified them there.
He personally carried our sins in His body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By His wounds you are healed.
Now let’s look at:
Now let’s look at:
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
Look at To walk humbly with thy God.
Now this is what we must understand: there is mutual humility in the walking with God.
But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
God paid the price to have a relationship with man.
He humbled himself by dying for us, not just dying but taking our sins and placing them on Himself on the cross.
But we find that man must also humble himself to have this relationship.
So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time He will lift you up in honor.
If I am to walk far along life’s pathway with a friend there must be humility in my heart and in my friend’s heart.
In the case of God and man, God stooping, humbling Himself, to accommodate man’s lost condition and man humbling his spirit in order that he may walk with God along the pathway that God has pick out for him and not man’s choosing but God’s plan.
In order for this walking together with God to work then we must have this agreement.
