Resting in Gods word

Rest is a CHOICE
(NEW ENGLISH TRANSLATION)
Psalm 62:1 NET
For God alone I patiently wait; he is the one who delivers me.

Rest is a CHOICE
Energy and time are precious, Limited entities.
Definition of REST =
Freedom from activity or labor
Peace of mind or spirit to TAKE relief or respite.
Philippians 4:9 ESV
What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

i like this word freedom because it means we have been liberated from our to do list and the anxieties of the world when we choose to rest in the Lord.
Gods rests bring refreshing. Worldly rest bring more anxiety.

have you ever tried to rest in worldly things? you get away for a moment, but when you come back all the things that stressed and worried you are still there looming in the darkness. You can’t escape it. You go on vacation, But when you retreat and rest in God you find peace and the worry of the world is now in the hands of God.
shows us 6 aspects of rest.

5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. THE LORD IS NEAR - ver 5
Being at true rest means to be in his presence.
DO NOT BE ANXIOUS - vrs 6
Think of a teeter totter. - rest/trust is on one end and worry and anxiety is on the other. The more you trust (choose rest) the less you worry and are anxious.

PRESENT YOUR REQUESTS IN PRAYER, PETITION, AND THANKSGIVING ver 6
The lord already knows the things that worry you, but in this passage we get the idea that he asks us to tell him our worries, and to be thankful for the blessings he has already given. We must first speak to him.
Our prayer life isn’t something to be afraid of, or stingy with. Its a conversation with him daily. A friend, a father, a teacher.
I often find myself in the strangest places talking to God. in the grocery store, in the shower, while I am giving the kids a bath. I find myself speaking to him as if i would someone who is right in the room with me. “ hey Lord, please help me have grace with my kids” Dear Lord, help me figure this out” “Lord help me find my keys”. “Thanks lord for the sunshine, thanks for the day of family, thanks for .....everything. Its important to have dialog with God.
Once we bring our requests, share our life with God then we find that
YOU’LL HAVE THE PEACE THAT WILL GUARD YOUR HEART, MIND. ver 7
Illustration. Have someone come up and take something with both hands. Then offer them something else. They wont be able to receive the gift until they put down the other item.
its only after we have conversation with God that the peace comes. We cannot have the peace of God without first laying our anxiety in his hands. we must first give away our anxiety, to be able to receive the peace of jESUS. -

If you are thinking on the things above you wont have the capacity to worry or be anxious. Your trust will be in the LORD.

This is SOOOO practical!!!! i love this! He spells is out for us and shows us how to be at rest. its not complicated

Rest in Gods presence (Prayer)
As I spoke about earlier prayer is a conversation.
conversations are 2 ways - Make sure you are not monopolizing the conversation.
Speak out loud whenever you can- allow your walls to come down and the peace from to rescue you.
Listen - open your heart to Gods voice. Ask him to reveal his voice to you more. MAKE TIME TO LISTEN AND HEAR HIM SPEAK.
Never heard the voice of God? ASK him to speak.
James 4:8 ESV
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Make time to be in the presence of the Lord.
in the shower,
on your drive to work maybe play worship music or have the bible playing.
maybe after you tuck the kids in bed turn off the tv and radio and sit in the quiet place with God.
early in the morning? late at night? Either way TAKE TIME. Even just 5 minutes of uninterrupted, quiet time. Turn off the noise, shut everything else off and listen!
He’s probably been trying to speak but you can’t hear him over the noise in your life.
You might feel silly at first, but thats ok. ask the Lord “ PLEASE SPEAK TO ME - GIVE ME EARS TO HEAR.”
Shutting everything off forces us to a place of rest.
i don’t think we realize how much noise we are bombarded with everyday.

What does it mean to be at rest? true rest, Gods rest in us is when our soul is in perfect relationship God. How do we do that?
so the practical - we can talk all we want about resting and getting into the word. And most of us would say we already know we need to spend ore time in the word and in prayer. I am not here to guilt trip you and make you believe that somehow i have it all figured out....I am in process just like all of you.
BUT with that being said- we must choose rest over worry
we must choose rest of the dishes - we must choose rest over watching tv, over working out, or over whatever it is that is keeping you from having time with the lord. we all have busy lives filled with things that we cannot change and get away from. I have 2 kids and a busy husband - i still have to take care of my resposibilites as a wife and mother, However, that is not an excuse for not taking and making the time the Lord wants us to give to him. We are only trusly at rest when our soulds are in right relatiinship with the Lord.
I have jars over here - one for each of you. Each jar is filled with scriptures and prayers.
There are going to be days when you dont have even 5 min to sit down and get in the word- but you do have 1 min. while you are in the bathroom getting ready for work, or bed,
while you are in the kitchen making dinner - or at your kitchen table having dinner with your family - At the front door on the wy to your car- whever you choose to put it make sure you put in in a place you can see it and use it EVERYDAY. Do let it be just another thing to clutter your counter. Instead let it be a focal pint that reminds you to spend time with him. A whisper from the Lord “ Hey have you spent time with me today?
