2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Intro- Have I ever questioned my salvation? Absolutely. Why? Jesus tell Peter in that Satan has desired to sift him like wheat and that he prays he will come through and be strengthened. Satan is going to tempt you and do his best to make you feel as though you never trusted Jesus as your savior. The good news is, Satan only wants to bring down the saints, the child of God. Satan doesn’t like it when you have joy. If you are lost Satan wants nothing to do with you. Why? Because you are already his. If you know you have accepted Christ and asked him into your heart by confessing your sin and asking forgiveness and believing then God has given us a promise and reassurance that we are His and nothing can take that away from us.
The objective for today is that every Christian can have reassurance by remembering the promise that God delivered on the day of your salvation.
1. Promise 1. Vs 1-2 God knew it, Jesus paid for it, and the Holy Spirit sanctified it.
a. From the beginning God knew we would need a savior.
b. God is all knowing – notice he said strangers scattered; God places those where they are needed. Literally means alongside heathen.
c. Jesus was obedient unto death- so should we
d. When we receive the Holy Spirit he seals himself to us and sets us apart from the lost.
2. Promise 2 Vs 3 God gives us a lively hope, or a living hope. One that doesn’t die. How?
a. Begotten us again- the new birth, spiritual birth. A radical change.
b. Because He lives, we live.
c. In this we have a living hope.
3. Promise 3 Vs 4 Our inheritance is reserved in heaven. He assures us that we will receive it. What’s special about our inheritance?
a. It’s incorruptible- imperishable; unravaged by an invading army. Nothing can take it away
b. It’s undefiled- our sin cant pollute it. Nothing can stain it
c. It won’t fade away- it will never decrease or go away
d. It’s reserved- It’s yours, waiting on you. We will receive it upon the resurrection of the saints. What is this inheritance? Don’t know exactly.
4. Promise 4 Vs 5 We are kept by the power of God
a. The same power that made the moon and stars keeps you. Kept is present participle meaning that the action is continually going. We are guarded by God until our salvation is complete.
b. Why are kept? Because of our faith unto salvation. By faith are we saved and that same faith gives us the reassurance that God is with us forever and we are his forever.
Conclusion: We’ve been doing church for so long that when we get convicted we tend to think we aren’t saved. We need to quit doing church and start doing what God intended to take place at the church and that’s to worship Him with all our heart soul mind body and strength! When we do that we won’t second guess our salvation. Quit looking back at what we used to be in the way of Lots wife when she looked back to see Sodom one more time. She couldn’t let go of her past even though God had given her a way out. If you want to remember what you used to be, then use it for the purpose of thanking God for pulling you from that wreck and show others the new you.
