Ministry in the church (Serving God)
Synopsis
The regular ministry of officially appointed or recognised ministers is a particular instance of the duty and call of all God’s people.
The responsibilities of those in recognised ministry
As shepherds
(NKJV) — 28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

(NKJV) — 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly;
Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly;
As watchmen
(NKJV) — 17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(NKJV) — 17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.

(NKJV) — 2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation!
Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation!
As teachers
(NKJV) — 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach;
See also ;
(NKJV) — 2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
(NKJV) — 24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,
As examples
(NKJV) — 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
See also ;
(NKJV) — 28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
(NKJV) — 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;
What believers owe to those with recognised ministries
Respect
(NKJV) — 12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
See also ;
(NKJV) — 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and hold such men in esteem;
(NKJV) — 17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.
Obedience
(NKJV) — 17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
See also
(NKJV) — 15 I urge you, brethren—you know the household of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves to the ministry of the saints—16 that you also submit to such, and to everyone who works and labors with us.
Support
Despite Jesus Christ’s command, Paul did not claim his rights in this matter, but supported himself as a tentmaker.
(NKJV) — 14 Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.
See also ; ; ;
(NKJV) — 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.
(NKJV) — 6 Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches.
(NKJV) — 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”
(NKJV) — 4 “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.
Prayer
(NKJV) — 30 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me,
See also ; ; ;
(NKJV) — 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel,
(NKJV) — 19 For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
(NKJV) — 25 Brethren, pray for us.
(NKJV) — 18 Pray for us; for we are confident that we have a good conscience, in all things desiring to live honorably.
Hospitality
(NKJV) — 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and hold such men in esteem; 30 because for the work of Christ he came close to death, not regarding his life, to supply what was lacking in your service toward me.
See also
(NKJV) — 14 And my trial which was in my flesh you did not despise or reject, but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
Imitation
(NKJV) — 7 Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.
Recognised ministers should encourage the ministries of other believers
(NKJV) — 17 And say to Archippus, “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.”
See also ; The Holy Spirit allocates gifts and enables ministries. No individual has all the gifts; ministry is shared and mutual; ;
(NKJV) — 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
(NKJV) — 4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
(NKJV) — 7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
(NKJV) — 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;
The motivation of ministry is mutual love
(NKJV) — 13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
See also ; ; ; ; ; ;
(NKJV) — 10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;
(NKJV) — 8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.
(NKJV) — 12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.
(NKJV) — 12 And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you,
(NKJV) — 1 Let brotherly love continue.
(NKJV) — 22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,
(NKJV) — 23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
How love is expressed in mutual ministry
In humility
(NKJV) — 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,
See also ; ; ;
(NKJV) — 10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;
(NKJV) — 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.
(NKJV) — 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
(NKJV) — 5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”
In patience
(NKJV) — 14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.
See also
(NKJV) — 9 Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!
In acceptance and forbearance
(NKJV) — 7 Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.
See also
(NKJV) — 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
In kindness, compassion and forgiveness
(NKJV) — 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
See also ;
(NKJV) — 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
(NKJV) — 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.
In burden-bearing
(NKJV) — 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
In encouragement
(NKJV) — 11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
See also ;
(NKJV) — 13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
(NKJV) — 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
In teaching and admonition
(NKJV) — 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
See also ; ;
(NKJV) — 14 Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
(NKJV) — 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
(NKJV) — 14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.
In prayer and confession of sin
(NKJV) — 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
In hospitality
(NKJV) — 9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.
