Intro:

Bring up Winners of the Waldo Hunt
How do you decide what makes something the greatest?
Slides: Peyton/Brady | Jordan/Lebron | Fortnite/PubG | Taylor Arianda
We can argue about this forever, because things change depending on:
emotions, interpretations, criteria, context
Typically, the way you feel about who the greatest is depends on who you like.(expound)
These are

Tension

For the next two week we are talking about what it means to be the greatest using a specific context. Call it a “Worldview”
-Because, depending on your worldview, things will look different. Your interpretation in be different. Emotions, criteria, context, etc.
-Something you need to know about these next two weeks: If Your worldview isn’t right, then you will never fully understand what we are talk about this week and next.
First: we need to have a starting point: GOD is FOR you.
At times it feels as if God is against us. Like we are at odds with him everywhere we turn.
I think that i can refute that feeling that we get:
Psalm 118:6–7 ESV
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.
Psalm 118 ESV
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” Let the house of Aaron say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” Let those who fear the Lord say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. All nations surrounded me; in the name of the Lord I cut them off! They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side; in the name of the Lord I cut them off! They surrounded me like bees; they went out like a fire among thorns; in the name of the Lord I cut them off! I was pushed hard, so that I was falling, but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. Glad songs of salvation are in the tents of the righteous: “The right hand of the Lord does valiantly, the right hand of the Lord exalts, the right hand of the Lord does valiantly!” I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the Lord. The Lord has disciplined me severely, but he has not given me over to death. Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!

Colossians 2:13–15 ESV
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Psalms 118:6-7
:6-7
Psalms 188:6-7
Psalm 46:1 ESV
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2 Timothy 4:18 ESV
The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
There are hundreds more! So first, we need to believe that God is FOR us.
Second: We need to understand that Jesus and God are one. When we see Jesus we are seeing God.
John 14:9 ESV
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
The Pharisees missed this. They thought Jesus was against them. Because of that, They hated Jesus, and therefore they unknowingly hated God.
So, spent their time trying to snare Jesus. And we pick up a passage in Matthew where the Pharisees are once again trying to trap Jesus.:
Second
Matthew 22:36–39 ESV
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Here’s what Jesus is saying: Its not what you are AGAINST, its about what you are FOR. Jesus didn’t choose Abraham and the Israelites because he was against everyone else. He chose them because he was FOR them.
Jesus is saying the same thing. He is FOR us.
Third: The greatest is the person who can follow these commandments.
In the God’s law, the greatest is seen in a worldview that isn’t shared by any other religion or government. The greatest makes himself the least. How?
By following
Matthew 22:36–39 ESV
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
This is what Jesus modeled. It’s the opposite of what the world models.
