Q: What do we need to be up to?

Let us be reminded of God’s Mission

The Christian community is both a sign and a promise of God’s coming liberation.

We are the presence of God’s liberating kingdom in a broken world.

We are the place where liberation can be found, offering a home for exiled people.

We are to welcome the broken people to a community of broken people.

We are the community among whom liberation is a present reality—the jubilee people who live with new economic and social relationships.

We are the light of the world, a city on a hill.

The challenge for us is to articulate Jesus’ message of liberation in a way that connects with people’s experience and offers a place of liberation in the Christian community.

Let us be reminded that you are here for somebody else

Why does He not send an express chariot to take them at once to heaven?

There is no necessity for saints being on earth that I know of, except for the good of their fellow men.

Sanctification might be completed in a moment; as for all the rest, it is already done.

God “has made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.”

Why do we stay here, then, at all, but that we may be salt in the midst of putrefaction—light in the midst of darkness—life in the midst of death?

The Church is the world’s hope.

As Christ is the hope of the Church, so the Church is the hope of the world.

The saints become, under Christ, the world’s saviors.

Then we must not marvel, being here for this very purpose, if Christ does throw us, like a handful of salt, just where the putrefaction is the worst; or if He should cast us, as He has often done with His saints before, where our influence is most needed.

be united in Spirit

be intent on one purpose

do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit

in humility regard one another as more important than yourself

do not merely look out for your own interests but also for the interests of others

Paul says that these are phrases that were part of Jesus’ attitude (v.5)

definition: a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person's behavior.

What might that look like?

Locations

The places you find yourself each day are dictated some by predetermined choices (I work here during this time, I am taking these classes this semester and they meet here, I live here).

What percentage of your day?

Most of the places you find yourself, are dictated by daily decisions (where you park, where you eat [bring lunch, eat out, go home], where you study, where you go “to do other things.”

These locations dictate who you are around.

In the predetermined choices the people you are around stays somewhat static.

In the daily decisions, you really not sure who you may come in contact with.

Let’s apply Jesus’ attitude to our daily schedule and to these 2 types of locations (pre-detemined and daily)

Step 1 - define each of the seven things (do that at your tables now - you have 3 min)

Step 2 - Apply the attitude to the predetermined locations.

How would/should/could this attitude affect your roommates, classmates, co-workers, teachers - people you will see all the time | people that you can easily talk to b/c you have stuff in common?

Step 3 - Apply the attitude to the daily decisions.

How would/should/could this attitude affect what I decide to do, and for how long, and with whom?

The creativity focused on here is the who, what, when, where?

The attitude of Jesus - if many people are working on the same thing, for the same reason while not acting selfishly - acting like others are more important - and including other individuals interests as we consider what ours should be.

Many of our daily lives would look a whole lot different.

I have often been accused of not giving straight answers (and that is because I want to you think and apply Biblical Truth for yourselves) but today I am telling you what to do without equivocation.

HAVE THIS ATTITUDE IN YOURSELVES!

living like that is how we work out our salvation with fear and trembling - because our God has a mission and He wants it done.
