Introduction:
Introduction:
As a part of my Wedding Tradition for every couple I marry I ask that couple to choose a life scripture that will guide them during their marriage. Both Tyrone and Jztia have chosen:
17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.
col
This scripture text is a wonderful text in that it encompasses the whole life of this marriage. Now to truly understand this text you really need to start in (v.12).
12 So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.
-I have found that in the complexities of marriage it is best to reduce it’s principles to simple truths. Life has a way of complicating itself unbeknownst to us. It is imperative that we look to the word for simple truths that guide us during our journey.
-In this text I want to give you two points in which you can make the foundation of your marriage.
The First Point I see is:
I. Glorify God in your Deeds
I. Glorify God in your Deeds
colossians 3:
12 So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.
-(v.12) “So, as those who have been chosen of God, Holy and Beloved” Listen to the truths from this phrase. Those that have been chosen of God. What a wonderful truth in this phrase. Not only has God chosen you for each other and lead you to meet each other at this time in your lives, but more importantly he has chosen you for salvation. The sovereign God of the Cosmos has gotten involved in your life and called you unto hisself for just such a time as this.
-Our Lord is preparing his bride “The Church”
a. Holy-Fully Matured
b. Beloved-Well taken of
-(v.12) The word then tells us what kind of behaviour should be flowing from our hearts:
a. Compassion-Merciful; willing to show empathy
b. Kindness-Charity; quick to give
c. Humility-to think rightly about oneself, not to high and not to low
d. gentleness-meek; not harsh or quick tempered
e. patience-Slow to anger
-(v.13) “bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone, just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you”
-These are principles to live by right here.
-(v.13) “bearing with one another” this tells us that in human relationships there will be times when people absolutely get on your nerves, and do things that really try your patience. God has ordained that we do life with imperfect people. This text tells us that Marriage is not a hollywood movie. There will bad medical reports, there will be disagreements, there will be broken promises, there will be bad attitudes, there will be bad morning breath. The scriptures tells us to “bear” with one another. Meaning to endure tough times. Develop a “never quit” attitude.
-(v.13) “forgiving each other” now this one will be tough because there are times when one of you will be wrong and there other will be right. During these times it is imperative that the one that is right be willing to forgive and restore rather than try to win an argument. Lack of forgiveness will destroy this union that God is bringing together. And just in case you forget to forgive, and pridefully hold things over your spouses head the Lord gave you an example. “Just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you”
-(v.14) “Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity” look at the finale. After giving you all of these heart characteristics the Paul says and after all these things “Put on love” meaning let love be the glue which all these other characteristics cling to. When you make a soup there are all kinds of ingredients carrots, celery, chicken, and rice, but the chicken stock is the liquid that they all swim and marinate in. In your marriage kindness, humility, gentleness and patience are the ingredients, but they all marinate or cook in the characteristics of love.
and finally
II. Glorify God in your words
II. Glorify God in your words
-(v.16) Paul tells us that our words ought to bring glory to the Lord.
How do can our words bring glory to God?
a. Wise Teaching & admonishing- We ought to be giving wise biblical insights and instruction to our spouse. Now this scriptures goes both ways. Tyrone that means there will be times when you will have to listen and implement the biblical wisdom that comes from Jztia. Jztia there will be times when you will need to listen and follow through with the biblical wisdom that comes from Tyrone.

-(v.16) “one another with psalms and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God” The key to understanding this text is found in (v.16a) “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts” When Christ is ruling your heart the right kinds of words will come out of your mouth. Words that bring correction, words that bring encouragement, and words that bring strength.
-(v.17) Now that we have walk through (v.12-16) Paul thought we can rightly understand Tyrone and Jztia life verse:
17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.
-This is conclusion of small sermonette by Paul. Let everything you do whether: word-what we say, deed-how we live. Do it in the name of the Lord, meaning whatever you do let it be something that our Lord would be pleased with.
a. Verbally
-And do it all with a heart of Thanksgiving.
-To the witnesses: You will notice that Paul couples word & deed together. There is reason for this. Many of us pray, and give verbal praise to God, but our deeds do not match our verbal profession. I want today to offer you a true gospel. The Christian life is not a verbal profession alone, but a total lifestyle change. It is a disruption of your current path. it is not an addition, but a transformation.
b.
-Both Tyrone and Jztia desire that if there is anyone here that is witnessing their ceremony who would like to receive Jesus as the Lord and Savior would not let this day pass before they make that decision.
