Illustration: Our perception of good news reporting is often impacted by our beliefs and view of the world. In order to change our views, good news must both engage our mind and penetrate our heart. Much of todays news engages our emotions and feelings without ever challenging our thinking.
Example: Today’s news paper stories. Headlines are meant to catch your attention. Once they get your attention, does the news paper article go deeper than just the headline?

The Good News goes deeper when:
Heard Word Unites With Faith ()
When the good news is proclaimed, when the WORD of God is preached and it unites with faith, a chain reaction occurs in the life of the believer.
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you.
Illustrate: Ears of faith
With what do you listen to the gospel (good news) of Jesus Christ?
Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.

With what do you listen to the gospel (good news) of Jesus Christ?
Your mind and heart (or just emotions & a physical need you want met at the current moment)- God wants to meet our heart felt needs
Illustrate: The women who came looking to draw water that must be drawn from deep down in a well and encounters the WORD who offers the gift of God which is living water that if she drinks, she will never thirsts again. But she must believe (have faith) in order to understand what Jesus means.
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
John 4:10
What do you hear when the good news is proclaimed?
Some people hear and are benefited, provided assistance by the message because they have decided to trust Jesus- to put their faith in Jesus, the ears of their faith is listening!
While others hear and are not helped or assisted at all- they do not experience spiritual healing and transformation
While others hear and are not helped or assisted at all- they do not experience spiritual healing and transformation
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
John 4:21-
Illustration: Believers enter the LORD’s rest whereas non-believers do not enter the LORD’s rest
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’ ”
Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest.”
shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it.
Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the Lord, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

‘Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers,

Faith Produces God Obeying Hearts ()
Now faith operates supernaturally on the inside of the believer in Jesus Christ. Now your faith reacts or responds to the good news through the power of the inward dwelling Holy Spirit.
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
John 14:
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
Obedience Provides Rest ()
At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
God’s WORD Examines The Heart ()
The WORD of God is living- uniformly attested & valid yesterday, today, and tomorrow
And Active- causes something to happen
Efficient i.e. (not wasted, does not return void) sharper than any two-edged sword- cuts efficiently
Penetrates (goes in)- piercing to the division of soul and of spirit-
Deep- of joints and of marrow- goes deep likened to through flesh and deep into the bone marrow
Why?
Discerning the thoughts- able to judge thoughts (content of thinking and reasoning)
Discerning the intentions- purpose and attitude of thinking
why you thinking what you think?
of the heart (heart of the matter) what causes you to do what you do?
Reveals- no creature is hidden from his sight
all are naked exposed (reveals you for what you are)
to the eyes of him to whom we must give account
Illustration: Surgeon Specialist in the operating room has to cut deep in order examine what is the underlying issue of an internal illness that is manifested outwardly.
The WORD is not only the surgeon but also the pathologist

O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
,
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Psalm 51:8
Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

Husband: Wouldn’t it be fantastic to go to the Holy Land and stand and shot the Ten Commandments from Mount Sinai?
Wife: It would be better if we stayed home and kept them.
Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.
