In John’s account of Jesus’ arrest there is no mention of Jesus’ agonizing prayer in the garden, as it is recorded by the synoptic gospels. Luke is the only gospel writer that describes his sweat became like drops of blood. The synoptic gospels speak of Jesus praying that the Father remove the cup from him, but not John. The synoptic gospels all mention that Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss, but not John. John being aware of the earlier gospels there was no need to repeat what they had written. So John writes through his own lens of what he witnessed and so when we take all the gospels together we have a complete picture of Jesus’ willingness to die for our sin.

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden, in which He entered with His disciples.

a. Jesus' was willing to fulfill God's will.
1. After Jesus' priestly prayer John said that Jesus went forth. This shows Jesus' willingness to go to the cross and fulfill God's will. Jesus was fully aware what awaited him at the garden of Gethsemane.
2. In verses 2 John records that “Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often met there with His disciples.” Turn to the book of (NASB)
39 And He came out and proceeded as was His custom (ethos- habitual practice) to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him.

39 And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him.
3. Gethsemane was an olive orchard on the Mt. of Olives. Jesus knew if he went to the garden of Gethsemane he would meet with Judas who was very much aware of His favorite praying ground. Jesus could have chosen to go to some other location. But he went where he knew he would meet Judas and the soldiers and be arrested so that he could fulfill God's will to die on the cross for our sin.
ii. Knowing Jesus' willingness to fulfill God's will to die for you ought to cause you to have the same willingness to obediently serve the Lord and fulfill His will that He has purposed for your lives.

II. (NASB)
4 So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and *said to them, "Whom do you seek?"
5 they answered Him, "Jesus the Nazarene." He *said to them, "I am He." And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.
6 So when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground.

a. Jesus' was willing to volunteer His life.

a. Jesus' was willing to volunteer His life.
1. Jesus knowing all the things shows that He had perfect knowledge of everything that was going to happen to him. Jesus didn't wait for Judas and the soldiers to find him. No, He willingly went forth revealed himself to them and calmly asked them "Whom do you seek?"

2. Their response to Jesus was "Jesus the Nazarene." From this it obvious that they did not know him, this is why the other gospels state that Judas needed to give a sign of a kiss to identify who Jesus was. I want you to notice that John mentions that Judas is standing with them. Judas once stood with Jesus is now standing against Jesus. Listen if you're not standing with Jesus you're standing against Him.
3. Note in v.5 John records that Jesus did something powerful and that was that Jesus voluntarily confesses to them "I am He." And when Jesus does this they do not grab him to arrest Him, but rather they’re driven back and have fallen to the ground. Jesus revealed that He is the great I AM -the Son of God- this also exhibited that Jesus had the power to overcome His captors at any time, that they were not in control of this situation, but rather Christ was in control and volunteered to surrender His life to be arrested because He was willing to die for our sin. ;

III. (NASB)
7 Therefore He again asked them, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus the Nazarene."
8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,"
9 to fulfill the word which He spoke, "Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one."

1. Jesus in v. 8 said, "I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,"
With the soldiers armed with weapons Jesus' disciples were in danger, and Jesus steps in to protect them from any harm or danger. Their life would be spared not by anything they could do. But by the fulfillment of Jesus' decree that He previously spoken in His prayer to his Father (NASB)
12 "While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.

2. Jesus said in , "I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." This is a reminder that our life was spared not by anything we could do, but because Jesus saved us by offering up His life in our place.

IV. (NASB)
10 Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave's name was Malchus.
11 So Jesus said to Peter, "Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?"

1. Peter attempted to stop the arrest by striking Malchus and cutting off his right ear. Dr. Luke records in chapter 22 that after Malchus ear was cut off that Jesus "touched his ear and healed him." This would be the last miracle Jesus would perform for another individual.

22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You."
23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."
4. Jesus wouldn't let anything stand in the way of him drinking the cup that the Father had given him. What was this cup? In the OT the cup represented God's wrath.
