Heart-Stirring Sermon Outlines 11. The Magnitude of God (John 4:24)

THE MAGNITUDE OF GOD

John 4:24

God is. This is the theme of the Bible. The Bible does not seek to prove the existence of God. It accepts it. This is where we must begin in this message on the doctrine of God. If we cannot believe in the existence of God or the testimony of the Bible, we might as well burn our history books. The man who says there is no God is called a fool: Ps. 14:1.

I. The magnitude of God’s person.

A. The names ascribed to God denote personality.

1. Jehovah-Jireh: The Lord will provide: Gen. 22:13, 14.

2. Jehovah-Rapha: The Lord that healeth: Exod. 15:26.

3. Jehovah-Nissi: The Lord our Banner: Exod. 17:8–15.

4. Jehovah-Shalom: The Lord our Peace: Judg. 6:24.

5. Jehovah-Raah: The Lord my Shepherd: Ps. 23:1.

6. Jehovah-Tsidekenu: The Lord our Righteousness: Jer. 23:6.

7. Jehovah-Shammah: The Lord is present: Ezek. 48:35.

B. The attributes of personality are ascribed to God in the Scripture.

1. God repents: Gen. 6:6.

2. God grieves: Gen. 6:6.

3. God is angry: 1 Kings 11:9.

4. God is jealous: Deut. 6:15.

5. God loves: Rev. 3:19.

6. God hates: Prov. 6:16.

II. The magnitude of God’s power (Rom. 1:20; Heb. 1:3).

A. He is omniscient. He knows all things: Prov. 5:21; 15:3; Ps. 147:4; Matt. 10:29.

B. He is omnipotent. He brings to pass everything He wills: Job 42:2; Gen. 18:14.

C. He is omnipresent. He is everywhere present: Jer. 23:23, 24; Ps. 139:7.

D. He is immutable. He is the same: Hab. 1:12; Mal. 3:6.

III. The magnitude of God’s purpose (Ps. 103).

A. The Son is the special object of God’s love: Matt. 3:17.

B. The believer is the special object of God’s love: John 16:27; 17:23.

C. The sinner is the special object of God’s love: John 3:16; Rom. 5:8.

When we consider the magnitude of God, the conclusion we reach is that God is very much alive and active in the affairs of men.
