Introduction

Today we come to commandment #5 in our series of the ten commandments for the 21st century. remember the first four
1. you will have no other Gods before or beside me
2. you will not make any graven images
3. you will not misuse the name of the Lord
4. remember the sabbath day.
5. Honor your Father and mother
This command is the only command in which the message is completely positive.
Exodus 20:12 ESV
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
This command is to honor your father and mother a better translation would be “you father and mother shall you honor that your days may be long in the land the Lord has given”
The family is of vital importance, this is because the family was the first institution that God created on earth.
The first family was the foundation of all human life and development that was to follow

Human life would stop
Human society would stop
Human government would stop
This is not to negate those who can not have children just that those that can should
Psalm 27:5 ESV
5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.
Psalm 127:5 ESV
5 Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
In our countery today, there is going concern that the age of people is growing the average age is about 40. There is concern that there are not enough young people however the sad reality is that we are killing them.
The family is the most importent institution and must be protected when families suffer so does all of socioty.
The family is the most important institution and must be protected when families suffer so does all of society.
The New testement cross refernce to our passage today is
The New testament cross reference to our passage today is
Ephesians 6:1–4 CSB
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, 3 so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land. 4 Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
There is a major difference between obey and honor
Obey=to follow, be subject to, to do without question
Honor=esteem, value, to place value upon
The idea here is your father and mother are Gods representatives to you and as God is to be obeyed and feared so his representatives.
The first part of the passage in Ephesians is addressed to children:
Children must obey
But the second part and the entirety of our passage today is addressed to everyone
everyone must honor

I. The command

The word honor in our passage today is even stronger than that in Ephesians it means to glorify and distinguish
A. Honor your father
A. Honor your father
This command breaks it down, you are first to honor your father.
The word father is used 1,200 times in the entire Bible and with over 10 different uses the use in this passage is that of the make parrent.

Honor your mother
B. Honor your mother
mother is used a total of 220 times throught the Bible four different uses but again here it is used meaning the female parrent.

II. The reason for the command

This command is so important that it is one of the only commands in the entire Bible that gives a reason for observing it
“that your days may be long”
this is not a reward it is a reason if you build a society in which children honor their parents that society will long survive
but a society that does not honor their parents is headed to self distruction
This command was given to the Israelites so the idea here was that if they honored their father and mother they would live long in the promise land.
under old testament law when this was written cursing your parents was a capital offence and therefore the child would be put to death. for children to have anything other than complete subjection to their parents would have been unheard of. ex 21:15
Exodus 12:15 ESV
15 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven out of your houses, for if anyone eats what is leavened, from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel.
Exodus 21:15 CSB
15 “Whoever strikes his father or his mother must be put to death.
Conclusion
The social structure which God has set up is that parents are to be honored this will enable society to survive.
as we have already discussed the word “honor” means more than just respect for parents, it implies providing for parents in old age. Jesus rebukes some of the Pharisees for breaking this commandment. in
Matthew 15:1–6 ESV
1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3 He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 5 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” 6 he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.
many parents seek to be loved by their children instead of honored
the Bible does not demand love to parents but does demand honor so whatever has happened in the past it may be impossible to fully love your parents, but we are all commanded to honor them
some parents have behaved so curly it is difficult to honor but this command still remains
So, why is it so importent to honor our parents
So, why is it so important to honor our parents
1. Children need to give honor, a father and mother who are not honored are jus adult peers of their children not parents
2. honoring parents is how all of us come to recognize there is a moral authority above us to which we are morally accountable we cannot honor God if we cannot honor our parents
How does this play out
1. we do not treat parents in the same way we would friends
2. parents deserve to be treated in a unique way
3. when we leave their home we remain in contact, having no contact with parents is the opposite of honor The term honor is very important this command does not end when the child leaves his parents’ house it continues until his parents enter the presence of our savior
Application
Children obey your parents
Parents do not provoke your children
Everyone honor your parents
