HAPPINESS
HAPPINESS
Happiness is an attitude of satisfaction or delight based upon
if the circumstances are pleasing
an attitude of satisfaction or delight based upon
a pleasing circumstance
a pleasing circumstance
if my health is good
if I have adequate financial resources
if I’m not having any problems with other people
In other words, if things are happening the way I think they should happen then, and only then, am I happy!
JOY
Joy is a deep, abiding confidence that
· No matter the circumstance,
· No matter the problem,
· No matter the illness,
· No matter the person,
· No matter the action,
· No matter the statement,
· No matter the look,
· No matter the finances,
· No matter the loss,
all is well.

PHILIPPIANS WERE CONCERNED ABOUT PAUL’S CIRCUMSTANCES
PHILIPPIANS WERE CONCERNED ABOUT PAUL’S CIRCUMSTANCES
THEY SENT EPAPHRODITUS TO VISIT PAUL
THAT HIS MINISTRY HAD BEEN CURTAILED
THAT HE WAS NOT ABLE TO PREACH THE GOSPEL
PHILIPPIANS WERE CONCERNED ABOUT PAUL’S CONDITION
MAYBE THEY HAD HEARD THAT WHEN PAUL WENT TO JERUSALEM, HE WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AND BEATEN BY THE COMMANDER OF THE ROMAN COHORT
MAYBE THEY HEARD THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RIOT AFTER HIS TESTIMONY BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN
MAYBE THEY HEARD THAT THERE HAD BEEN A PLOT TO KILL PAUL AND THAT HE HAD BEEN TAKEN OUT AT NIGHT TO CAESAREA UNDER 70 HORSEMAN & 200 SPEARMAN
MAYBE THEY HAD HEARD ABOUT HIS TWO YEAR IMPRISONMENT IN CAESAREA
MAYBE THEY HAD HEARD THAT PAUL HAD STOOD BEFORE FELIX THE GOVERNOR OF CAESAREA,
AND THEN BEFORE FESTUS THE FOLLOWING GOVERNOR OF CAESAREA
AND THEN FINALLY BEFORE KING AGRIPPA
MAYBE THEY HAD HEARD ABOUT PAUL’S JOURNEY TO ROME, THE SHIP WRECK, HIS HOUSE ARREST IN HOME, HIS INABILITY TO TRAVEL, HIS BEING CHAINED TO A PRISON GUARD DAY AND NIGHT, WAITING FOR AN IMPENDING TRIAL
MAYBE PAUL HAD A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE ON PAST EVENTS
MAYBE PAUL WOULD SAY, YOU KNOW,
AT TIMES I HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO REMINISCE ABOUT ALL OF THE GOOD THINGS THAT GOD HAS DONE FOR ME AND I JUST HAVEN’T FOUND ANY TIME LEFT OVER TO THINK ON THE BAD THINGS OF THE DAY
EVERY TIME I GIVE MY TESTIMONY ABOUT THE DAY THAT GOD CAME TO ME AND REVEALED HIMSELF TO ME AND SAVED MY SOUL FROM AN ETERNAL DAMNATION AND FILLED ME WITH HIS SPIRIT AND PRODUCED IN ME THE JOY OF MY SALVATION, GIVEN ME A CHANCE TO SEE LYDIA COME TO CHRIST, THE JAILER COME TO CHRIST, YOUNG TIMOTHY CONTINUE TO GROW IN THE LIKENESS OF CHRIST… I JUST CAN’T TAKE MY FOCUS OFF OF WHAT IT’S GOING TO BE LIKE ONE DAY WHEN I SEE HIM IN ALL HIS GLORY AND GET TO START MY ETERNAL DAYS WITH HIM
PAUL MIGHT HAVE SAID, YOU KNOW I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO COMPLETE HIS CALLING ON MY LIFE HAD HE NOT ORCHESTRATED MY LIFE TO BE IMPRISONED
YOU KNOW IMPRISONMENT WAS THE PLATFORM OF MINISTRY NOT OF MY OWN CHOOSING BUT GOD’S SO THAT I COULD SHARE THE GOSPEL WITH THE NATIONS LEADERS
PAUL’S CALLING
PAUL WAS CALLED TO BEAR JESUS’S NAME BEFORE:
1. THE SONS OF ISRAEL (SYNAGOGUES)
2. GENTILES (MISSIONARY JOURNEYS)
3. THE KINGS (IMPRISONMENT)

the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves under an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
PAUL HAD A DIVINE PERSPECTIVE
Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel,
so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else,
and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.
Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will;
the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel;
the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment.
What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice.
Yes, and I will rejoice,
for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
