Introduction

Text -
2 Timothy 3:1–8 NASB95
But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith.
Not all gospel preaching are the same
Paul warned of another gospel in his day
Galatians 1:6–9 NASB95
I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
Galatians 1
the gospel has been morphed into different versions down through history, it is so much different from the original gospel preached by the apostles.

Main Points

The Breakdown of morality in the last days

The real source difficulty in the last days are the humans themselves.
Men will be...
lovers of self
2 Timothy 3:1–4 NASB95
But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

without self-control

lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God
Paul’s description is not exclusive to unbelievers; it includes the people in the church.
2 Timothy 3:6–7 NASB95
For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
2 Timothy 3.5-6
2 Timothy 3:5–7 NASB95
holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
2 Timothy 3.6-
these are the people, especially leaders, who got involved in the church and brought in their version of the gospel
The question is:
Why are today’s Christians behaving like unbelievers?

The Root of the problem

2 Timothy 3:5 NASB95
holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.
Powerless Christianity
2 Timothy 3.5
people are holding to a form of godliness
people are striving for godliness without the power of God
A powerless gospel will only produce Christianity without transformation of lives
the power of biblical Christianity is the Holy Spirit.
Christianity without transformation of lives
Learning without understanding.
2 Timothy 3:8 NASB95
Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith.
2 Timothy 3:7 NASB95
always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Without the Holy Spirit, people will not understand God’s plans and counsel.
1 Corinthians 2:10–11 NASB95
For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.
1 Corinthians 2.10-11
John 16:13 NASB95
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

The “distorted gospel” of Jannes and Jambres

2 Timothy 3:8 NASB95
Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith.

Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses

Exodus 7:10–13 NASB95
So Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and thus they did just as the Lord had commanded; and Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent. Then Pharaoh also called for the wise men and the sorcerers, and they also, the magicians of Egypt, did the same with their secret arts. For each one threw down his staff and they turned into serpents. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. Yet Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the Lord had said.
they were called “magicians”
Exodus 7.10-
Exodus 7:22–23 NASB95
But the magicians of Egypt did the same with their secret arts; and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the Lord had said. Then Pharaoh turned and went into his house with no concern even for this.
Exodus 7:20–23 NASB95
So Moses and Aaron did even as the Lord had commanded. And he lifted up the staff and struck the water that was in the Nile, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, and all the water that was in the Nile was turned to blood. The fish that were in the Nile died, and the Nile became foul, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. And the blood was through all the land of Egypt. But the magicians of Egypt did the same with their secret arts; and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the Lord had said. Then Pharaoh turned and went into his house with no concern even for this.
Exodus 7.22
Exodus 8:5–7 NASB95
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the streams and over the pools, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.’ ” So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. The magicians did the same with their secret arts, making frogs come up on the land of Egypt.
Exodus 8.
Their objectives:
Prove that the God of Moses is no greater than the gods of Egypt
To keep Israel in bondage
The result of their “magics”
Pharaoh’s heart is hardened
Israel is not delivered from bodage

Jannes and Jambres in the Last Days

they oppose the truth - the true apostolic Gospel
they are men of depraved mind - corrupt thinking, lacking integrity
rejected concerning the faith - not accepted before God
Characteristics of the gospel of Jannes and Jambres
comfortable salvation
they preach salvation without surrender and renouncing of the sinful life
they preach salvation without separation from the world
they preach new birth without dying to sin
the preach heaven without hell, without the wrath of God
the teach how to worship without the real presence of God
material prosperity
they preach a gospel that is focused on earthly gain
Their objectives
to show that the God of the Bible and the gods of other religions are on the same level
to harden the hearts of people
to keep the sons of God from coming out of bondage

Jannes and Jambres will be exposed

The “Gospel” of Moses

Why did Jannes and Jambres come on the scene (in Egypt)?

Moses comes with the Gospel from God

Exodus 5:1 NASB95
And afterward Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let My people go that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.’ ”
Exodus 5.1
“Let my people go!”
His message announces that the time for God’s people to inherit the promise has come!
A “Moses”ministry has arrived on the scene in these last days!
proclaiming deliverance from spiritual bondage!
His message prompts the spirits of Jannes and Jambres to rise up and deceive people inside the denominations.

Jannes and Jambres will be exposed

How will God expose the errors of Jannes and Jambres in the last days?
2 Timothy 3:8 NASB95
Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith.
2 Timothy 3:9 NASB95
But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all, just as Jannes’s and Jambres’s folly was also.
The “magicians” came to their wits’ end
Exodus 8:16–19 NASB95
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, that it may become gnats through all the land of Egypt.’ ” They did so; and Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff, and struck the dust of the earth, and there were gnats on man and beast. All the dust of the earth became gnats through all the land of Egypt. The magicians tried with their secret arts to bring forth gnats, but they could not; so there were gnats on man and beast. Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the Lord had said.
Exodus 9:11 NASB95
The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians as well as on all the Egyptians.
Exodus 8.
The “finger of God” - genuine triumphs over the fake
real faith endures - fake faith will fail
real godliness endures
genuine conversion will triumph over the imitation
God separates His people
Exodus 8:21–24 NASB95
“For if you do not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and on your servants and on your people and into your houses; and the houses of the Egyptians will be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they dwell. “But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where My people are living, so that no swarms of flies will be there, in order that you may know that I, the Lord, am in the midst of the land. “I will put a division between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will occur.” ’ ” Then the Lord did so. And there came great swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh and the houses of his servants and the land was laid waste because of the swarms of flies in all the land of Egypt.
Exodus 8.21-22

Conclusion

Beware of the gospel of Jannes and Jambres
don’t mix with the world, nor with denominational Christians
don’t shape your life around the things of Egypt
don’t bow down to modern “idols”
We have heard the Gospel of Moses in our day
the end-time message has called us out of bondage inside apostate Christianity.
the end-time message is pointing us “back to the Word of God” which the apostles preached in their day and age.
the end-time message “separates” us from apostate Christianity and “unites” us with the Word of God.
