Being able to control our anger and, in fact, joyfully embrace forgiveness and mercy is one of the economies of Christ which does not make sense to us as carnal beings. In our fallen natures, we instinctively cling to anger and bitterness. We hold grudges and wait for the chance to repay evil with our own evil. Jesus worked with His disciples on this.
