Introduction

1. Let’s turn to Judges 9:1.

4. We are continuing with our study of the Judges.

a. We have learned that the theme of Judges is, “There was no king in those days, but every man did what was right in his owns” (Judges 21:25).

b. We have learned about some interesting Judges like Othniel, Ehud, and Barak.

c. We were introduced to Gideon, a mighty man of valor; God used him to bring deliverance from the Midianites.

5. Tonight, we will learn about Abimelech and how we can avoid pain through embracing truth, sincerity, and being honorable.

I. God judges Abimelech and Shechem for not acting in truth and sincerity – honorably against Gideon’s family.

A. Abimelech’s destruction of Gideon’s family (Judges 9:1-6).

1. Abimelech appeals to the men of Shechem to be their king.

2. The idea of a king is something that was contentious in Israel.

a. Moses had discussed requirements for a king (Deuteronomy 17:

b. Gideon refused to be a king (Judges 8: ), but acted as one apparently.

c. Samuel was asked by Israel to make them a king (1 Samuel 8:5).

B. Abimelech’s denouncement by Jotham (Judges 9:7-21).

1. The ridicule (9:7-15): Jotham, the only surviving half brother, ridicules Abimelech by telling the parable of the trees.

a. Parables are not just for the Old Testament.

b. The trees are all representative of Israel.

2. The rebuke (9:16-21): Jotham denounces the Israelites who chose Abimelech to rule.

C. Abimelech’s difficulties (9:22-41).

1. Caused by God (9:22-25): After three years, God stirs up trouble between Abimelech and the people of Shechem through an evil spirit.

2. Caused by Gaal (9:26-41): Gaal, a leading citizen of Shechem, organizes a revolt.

D. Abimelech’s depravity (9:42-49): Abimelech and his men ruthlessly slaughter the people of Shechem for rebelling against him.

E. Abimelech’s death (9:50-57): Abimelech is killed by a woman. An upper millstone was about 2” and 12” in dia. Probably weighing 25-30 lbs.
