Woman at the well

Jesus and the Woman of Samaria-
Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and bbaptizing more disciples than (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed cagain for Galilee. 4 dAnd he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field ethat Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, fwearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.1
7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, f“Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (gFor Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)[1]
Observations
Observations
1. Jesus was trying to give some distance because the number of individuals being Baptized was causing Jealousy and issues. It was time for Jesus Ministry to keep moving forward. So, He is leaving Judea and starts heading for Galilee, but he must go through Samaria. This is a massive amount of distance on the map and a challenge for anyone.
2. Jesus is Thirsty and it Hot. What is the sixth hour? (Noon) He is asking a woman who has questionable history that is all by herself for a drink of water.
a. How is this odd?
i. The custom of the time was women came in groups to collect the water early before it got too hot. Water was very scarce where they are.
ii. Also, Jewish man were not to speak to woman in public. Especially the Rabbi talking to a woman who has a questionable past.[2] This interaction would cause a blemish on the reputation of the Teacher.
b. Questions – Where are the other Disciples at this point ? Jesus is all alone with this woman. If we look

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles
These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans.
Jesus had a special mission or job for the Disciples while he was talking with this woman.
Principles
Principles
1. Jesus who was the son of God is talking to a woman alone by Jacobs well who was an adultery with multiple husbands. But, he did not treat her like a second class citizen or someone unworthy but was treating her like one of his children.
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you hliving water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 iAre you greater than our father Jacob? jHe gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but kwhoever drinks of the water that I will give him lwill never be thirsty again.2 The water that I will give him will become min him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, ngive me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” [3]
Observations
Observations
1. What is living water? At this time the Samarian woman was confused because living water in her eyes could have been a stream or a flowing river which was very rare in the Geographical area that they were. However, Jesus was referring to himself and the salvation from our sins instead of moving water.[4]
Principles
Principles
1. Let’s look at the overall and connect the last chuck to this chunk: Why was Jesus talking to a woman about living water all alone?
a. Jesus does not discriminate on who gets the living water. He does not say that you had a rough past or something that is questionable.
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, ocall your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that pyou are qa prophet. 20 rOur fathers worshiped on sthis mountain, but you say that tin Jerusalem is uthe place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, v “Woman, believe me, wthe hour is coming when xneither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 yYou worship what you do not know; zwe worship what we know, for zsalvation is afrom the Jews. 23 But bthe hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father cin spirit and dtruth, for the Father eis seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”[5]
Observations
Observations
1. Since the Samarian woman was confused by what Jesus was meaning by living water. He says Go get your husband. However, Jesus knows that she has no Husband and is trying to have her understand her sinful nature.[6]
2. What is the Samarian woman meaning when he is asking Jesus if he is a Prophet? This was meaning that he had supernatural power or inspiration to know the details of this woman that Jesus just meet.
3. Mountain? ( (ESV) The Samarian woman is referring to alter or a place where offering to God were made.
a. But Jesus is stating that soon you will not have to travel to a Mountain to worship God Because Jesus will Die on a Cross to be the Connection Between you and the Father. (Verse 23)
Principles
Principles
1. God wants us to live our lives but to live in a Godly and True way. Not in a fashion that is full of Sin and Deceit. He is not trying to be a buzz kill on the fun but looking out for us like our Earthly father does. He provides advice to us through the Bible and through the Challenges that we go through to bring us closer to him.
2. We do not need to worship idols or other people But God himself. WE do not worship other pastors or teachers. They are meant to be a delivery guy of the word of God. There to teach us what God means but not to replace God in any fashion.
25 The woman said to him, “I know that fMessiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, ghe will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, h“I who speak to you am he.”
27 Just then ihis disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man jwho told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, k“Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, l“Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, m“My food is nto do the will of him who sent me and oto accomplish his work.[7]
35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that pthe fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that qsower and rreaper smay rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, t‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap uthat for which you did not labor. Others have labored, vand you have entered into their labor.” [8]

[4] In addition to the eating and drinking of the eucharistic gifts (→ 4), John also speaks of drinking the living water (4:7–14; 7:37). To the woman at Jacob’s well Jesus promises water that will satisfy thirst forever. Whoever drinks this water, which brings eternal life, will never thirst again (4:10–14). All who thirst should come to Jesus (7:37), and whoever believes in him, from that person rivers of living water will flow (v. 38). Drinking of living water should be viewed as parallel to eating the bread of life (6:35, 50f.; cf. 4:32). Jesus is himself the gift that one can receive through faith.[4]

29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”
29- 30 The town of Samaria was shocked and dropped everything to go to where Jesus was. This was a mass movement of everyone. They were shocked, amazed and could not get to where Jesus was fast enough.
31 -32 The Disciples were trying to get Jesus to Eat. Rabbi is another word for teacher specifically a Spiritual teacher. Jesus in the beginning of the Chapter sends out the Disciples to go get food and do other tasks. Imagine how you are when you are exercising or at work. You are counting the minutes until you can take lunch or go home. Jesus was going through the effects of being exhausted from heat and the Journey. Suddenly Jesus isn’t cranky anymore. The Disciples are asking each other if he received any food because everything has changed. The spiritual fullness that Jesus experienced by talking at the woman at the woman would be equilievent to a snicker and a Gatorade. He was charged up and ready to go again.
33-34 At this point the Disciples are confused and wondering what is going on? Jesus tends to do this because he is the ultimate teacher of all things. Jesus says, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me”. This is powerful because this goes back to Jesus is doing everything of his father and not of his own desires or needs. 30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.[1] ()
►35 What do you think “are White for Harvest”? ◄
The Greek sense translates White to be Ripe for the grain that is ready to be picked. Jesus is talking about the farmers who must wait four months to collect the harvest but in the next verse (36) we learn that Jesus is talking about a Spiritual harvest. The Spiritual Harvest does not have a long period of time to collect but is short to the coming back of Jesus in the Tribulation. Jesus is trying to prepare the disciples for the return of him and sets the stage that there are greater things out there.
36-38 Jesus is using an example that all the Disciples would understand. Reapers of the field. They collected the stray grain. Jesus is explaining to the Disciples that it is their JOB and Privilege of leading others to be faithful followers of God.
37 – “One sows and another reaps” This is Jesus talking about the work that John the Baptist completed and what we covered in the Beginning of the Book. John paved the way and was the precursor to Jesus. His job was not to be the Messiah but to be the person that prepared for his arrival.
38- Jesus is telling the Disciples that even though they did not do the work to those that are being saved. IT is a win for Team God. They had the joy and instant reward of knowing that People were being saved and reaped the work of John the Baptist.
39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
43 After the two days he departed for Galilee. 44 (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.) 45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For they too had gone to the feast. [2]
39-42 The story is turning back to the Samaritan woman that was at the well. However, now she has the whole town at the site of the Well. We do not know how far the well was but it was on the outskirts of the town. The action of Jesus ministering to this woman that was an outcast caused many others to become believers. Jesus knowing that these towns people would become believer that this is a way to show how Jesus knows the person that is inside and an indication of his divinity of being the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We learn that Jesus stays with the woman from the well for two days to spend time in teaching and ministering. Jesus was showing his disciples what he was commanding them to do first hand.
The Testimony of the woman of the well was God’s way of getting the towns people out to hear the message. However, Jesus was literally leading them to water- the Literal water because if he would have gone into town. No one would have listened to him and would have instead treated him badly. This was a very smart move.
43 Jesus is leaving to head to Galilee
44-45 Jesus mention many times that Prophets do not have any honor in their hometown, but they have honor and respect in other towns that see what they do. (ESV) And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.
However, this has a clue to what will happen? Jesus is being rejected already and is a sign of the rejection that he will face on the cross. He was trying to prepare the Disciples for the Pain and rejection that they were going to experience.
The Galileans welcome Jesus because they were at the wedding feast that we covered in Chapter 2.
John 3:46-53
John 3:46-53
46 So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” 49 The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. 51 As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. 52 So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household. 54 This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee. [3]
46 - 47 Jesus returns to the city of the wedding Feast. Cana in Galilee. There was an official or a representative of the King whose son was sick and on the verge of death. He had heard that Jesus could do Miracles and Healings.
48- Jesus tells the Official that he needs to believe in Him and in his father God. Unless you perceive the signs and wonders. The Greek sense for signs really is miracles and wonders mean supernatural or not possible unless there is intervention of God.
Really Jesus is saying unless you believe in the Miracles and the intervention of my Father your son will die.
49 – 50 The official is desperate for his son to not die. He is very emotional and to the point he will do anything. In Verse 50 Jesus is saying that You need to show faith in him and his father and your son will live.
51-54 The official is going back home. Mulling over what happened when his slaves in the Orginal Greek meet him. They tell him that his son is feeling better. The official is wondering when this happens and says the Seventh Hour (1 pm by some) However, by the roman time it was 7 pm.
This was the exact hour that the official was talking to Jesus and pleading for his life and Jesus says your son will live. This was the second sign (Miracles) Jesus was trying to send a message through the act of healing this official’s son. Human-beings are stubborn so unless something drastic happens then we will not spread the word. We are selfish, and everyone has a dramatic event or past that led them to become followers of Jesus.
It could be that your dad wasn’t the Greatest, or your family doesn’t love you. You felt rejection. Either way you are loved and you have the greatest friend, family member who covers all your sons for you.
