Election = to call out or to chose
22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.
Predestination= to decide upon before hand to predestine
And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’
29 For those whom He foreknew [of whom He was aware and loved beforehand], He also destined from the beginning [foreordaining them] to be molded into the image of His Son [and share inwardly His likeness], that He might become the firstborn among many brethren.
30 And those whom He thus foreordained, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified (acquitted, made righteous, putting them into right standing with Himself). And those whom He justified, He also glorified [raising them to a heavenly dignity and condition or state of being].
Choose : to choose something for something
16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
Foreknow : to know beforehand to purpose
2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
Appoint: to assign, cause to be, to belong to, to be classed among those possessing
48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.
“This issue is not whether or not the Bible teaches election and predestination, for that is clear to all. But the issue is, ‘What does it mean to be elect or predestined?’
Unconditional Predestination/Election: The belief that God predestined people for salvation before the beginning of time. God’s election is not conditioned by anything in man, good or evil, foreseen or present, but upon God’s sovereign choice.
remember the former things of old;
for I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me,
Conditional Predestination/ Election = Those who are predestined by God are those who in His infinite knowledge He is able to foresee who will accept the offer of salvation.
declaring the end from the beginning
and from ancient times things not yet done,
saying, ‘My counsel shall stand,
and I will accomplish all my purpose,’
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

The Issue then becomes can we chose God ?
Total Depravity: Humanity has fallen into a state of radical corruption that has affected every aspect of who we are. The imago Dei has been marred, but not destroyed.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;
rom 3
11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
13 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.”
14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 in their paths are ruin and misery,
17 and the way of peace they have not known.”
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
If we cant respond then why does God call us ?
1. If you believe in election, doesn’t that leave you with the problem of why God doesn’t choose to save everyone?
1. If you believe in election, doesn’t that leave you with the problem of why God doesn’t choose to save everyone?
Yes, but the same is true for Christians who don’t believe in election. Election doesn’t create the problem, it only leads us to think about it. To deny the doctrine of election does not help you escape the issue. All Christians have this problem, and so we cannot object to election by appealing to it. A person who doesn’t believe in election faces this dilemma:
(a) God wants everybody saved.
(b) God could save everyone.
(c) God does not.
2. But if everything is fixed and certain, why pray, evangelize, or do anything at all?
2. But if everything is fixed and certain, why pray, evangelize, or do anything at all?
3. I believe the Bible and I see all the teaching about election, but why do I still dislike it?
3. I believe the Bible and I see all the teaching about election, but why do I still dislike it?
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,
4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
11 Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?
Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.

1 “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ”

15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
21 And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word.
Prevenient grace: A designation of the priority of God’s gracious initiative on behalf of humans. Hence the term refers to the gracious action of God, displayed in the person and work of Christ but present in the lives of human beings through the agency of the Holy Spirit, which precedes all human response to God’s initiative.
Calvinists view prevenient grace as that aspect of special grace by which God redeems, sanctifies and glorifies the believer; hence, it is bestowed only on those whom God elects to eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.
For Wesley (and consequently for many Arminians) prevenient grace is the Holy Spirit’s work in the hearts of all people, which gives them the freedom to say yes to the gospel; thus prevenient grace can be accepted or rejected, but justification cannot be achieved without it.

For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
Those who are predestined by God are those who in His infinite knowledge He is able to foresee will accept the offer of salvation made in Jesus Christ

The Imago Dei in Man(Lat. “image of God”). Refers to the fact that humanity carries a unique resemblance to God.
•Questions:
1.Do humans carry dignity as God’s image bearers?
2.Do humans alone carry the image of God? What about animals? Do they have the image of God?
3.What affect did the fall have on the image of God? Did humanity lose this image after the Fall?
4.How should the fact that man is created in the image of God affect the way we treat one another?
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,
7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
1.What do these verses tell us about the meaning of being created in the image of God?
2.What else does it mean to be created in God’s image?
Aspects Of The Imago Dei:
1.Personality 2.Eternality 3.Relationality 4.Volitionality 5.Rationality 6.Spirituality 7.Physicality 8.Morality 9.Dominionality
“I would infer that everything we are reflects God in some way, though everything we are is also different from God!”
–John Frame
“These differences between human beings and the rest of creation are not absolute differences but often differences of very great degree. . . . The more complex and highly developed animals are more like God than lower forms of animals. Therefore, we should not say that only man reflects any likeness to God at all, for in one way or another all of creation reflects some likeness to God. But it is still important to recognize that only man, out of all creation, is so like God that he can be said to be “in the image of God.” . . . In some respect the differences are absolute, and in other respects they are relative, but they are significant.”
–Wayne Grudem
1.Personality: Like God, people are individual beings with self consciousness.
2.Eternality: Like God, people will exist into eternity.
3.Relationality: Like God, people have a capacity and drive for relationships.
4.Volitionality: Like God, people have the freedom and ability to make volitional choices according to their will.
5.Rationality: Like God, people have the ability to think, contemplate, and reflect on abstract ideas, future plans, and past events, advancing toward a more beneficial existence through problem solving.
6.Spirituality: Like God, people are spiritual beings possessing an immaterial part of their constitution.
7.Physicality: Unlike God, people have a material part of their constitution that is corporeal. But like God, people have senses that come as a direct result of our physicality, such as man’s ability to see and to hear.
8.Morality: Like God, people are inherently moral creatures, understanding that there is good and evil (although this was gained as a result of the Fall).
9.Dominionality: Like God, people have been given authority to rule over creation, using all its resources for their benefit, enjoyment, and survival.
How did the Fall affect the Imago Dei?
1.Man fully retains the imago Dei and only misrepresents it through personal sin.
2.Man fully lost the imago Dei. It is restored only in Christ.
3.The imago Dei has been retained in all men, but marred by sin. It is restored in Christ.
Scripture clearly states that the imago Dei has been retained to some degree in all people.
1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God.
2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.
3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.
6 “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.
8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
9 “To whom will he teach knowledge, and to whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, those taken from the breast?
10 For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.”
11 And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.”
For by people of strange lips
and with a foreign tongue
the Lord will speak to this people,
12 And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot read.”
For by people of strange lips
and with a foreign tongue
the Lord will speak to this people,
13 And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,
to whom he has said,
“This is rest;
give rest to the weary;
and this is repose”;
yet they would not hear.
14 therefore, behold, I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”
to whom he has said,
“This is rest;
give rest to the weary;
and this is repose”;
yet they would not hear.
And the word of the Lord will be to them
precept upon precept, precept upon precept,
line upon line, line upon line,
here a little, there a little,
that they may go, and fall backward,
and be broken, and snared, and taken.
Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers,
who rule this people in Jerusalem!
33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
Rom 11
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.

•The fact that some truths must be held in tension.
•
•Free Will and Election are often taught side by side, sometimes in the same text.
•
•There are some truths that will remain to us a mystery and we cannot expect to solve them in this world.
Man is a responsible moral agent, though he is also divinely controlled; man is divinely controlled, though he is also a responsible moral agent. God’s sovereignty is a reality and man’s responsibility is a reality too.
—J. I. Packer
“ The antinomy which we face now [God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility] is only one of a number that the Bible contains. We may be sure that they all find their reconciliation in the mind and counsel of God, and we may hope that in heaven we shall understand them ourselves. But meanwhile, our wisdom is to maintain with equal emphasis both the apparently conflicting truths in each case, to hold them together in the relation in which the Bible itself sets them, and to recognize that here is a mystery which we cannot expect to solve in this world.”
–J. I. Packer
