OPENING ILLUSTRATION?
ESTABLISH THE CONTEXT (focus on the last section and how this passage intentionally fits right after it.)
1 Then He began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug out a pit for a winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away. 2 At harvest time he sent a slave to the farmers to collect some of the fruit of the vineyard from the farmers. 3 But they took him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Again he sent another slave to them, and they hit him on the head and treated him shamefully. 5 Then he sent another, and they killed that one. He also sent many others; they beat some and they killed some.
6 “He still had one to send, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
7 “But those tenant farmers said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’ 8 So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
9 “Therefore, what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers and give the vineyard to others. 10 Haven’t you read this Scripture:
The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.
11 This came from the Lord
and is wonderful in our eyes?”
12 Because they knew He had said this parable against them, they were looking for a way to arrest Him, but they were afraid of the crowd. So they left Him and went away.

Then they sent some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to Him to trap Him by what He said.
Καὶ ἤρξατο αὐτοῖς ἐν παραβολαῖς λαλεῖν· Ἀμπελῶνα ἄνθρωπος ἐφύτευσεν, καὶ περιέθηκεν φραγμὸν καὶ ὤρυξεν ὑπολήνιον καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν πύργον, καὶ ἐξέδετο αὐτὸν γεωργοῖς, καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν. καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τοὺς γεωργοὺς τῷ καιρῷ δοῦλον, ἵνα παρὰ τῶν γεωργῶν λάβῃ ἀπὸ τῶν καρπῶν τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος· καὶ λαβόντες αὐτὸν ἔδειραν καὶ ἀπέστειλαν κενόν. καὶ πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἄλλον δοῦλον· κἀκεῖνον ἐκεφαλίωσαν καὶ ἠτίμασαν. καὶ ἄλλον ἀπέστειλεν· κἀκεῖνον ἀπέκτειναν, καὶ πολλοὺς ἄλλους, οὓς μὲν δέροντες οὓς δὲ ἀποκτέννοντες. ἔτι ἕνα εἶχεν, υἱὸν ἀγαπητόν· ἀπέστειλεν αὐτὸν ἔσχατον πρὸς αὐτοὺς λέγων ὅτι Ἐντραπήσονται τὸν υἱόν μου. ἐκεῖνοι δὲ οἱ γεωργοὶ πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς εἶπαν ὅτι Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ κληρονόμος· δεῦτε ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτόν, καὶ ἡμῶν ἔσται ἡ κληρονομία. καὶ λαβόντες ἀπέκτειναν αὐτόν, καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος. τί ποιήσει ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος; ἐλεύσεται καὶ ἀπολέσει τοὺς γεωργούς, καὶ δώσει τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ἄλλοις. οὐδὲ τὴν γραφὴν ταύτην ἀνέγνωτε· Λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας· παρὰ κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη, καὶ ἔστιν θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν;
I will sing about the one I love,
a song about my loved one’s vineyard:
The one I love had a vineyard
on a very fertile hill.
He broke up the soil, cleared it of stones,
and planted it with the finest vines.
He built a tower in the middle of it
and even dug out a winepress there.
He expected it to yield good grapes,
but it yielded worthless grapes.
So now, residents of Jerusalem
and men of Judah,
please judge between Me
and My vineyard.
What more could I have done for My vineyard
than I did?
Why, when I expected a yield of good grapes,
did it yield worthless grapes?
Now I will tell you
what I am about to do to My vineyard:
I will remove its hedge,
and it will be consumed;
I will tear down its wall,
and it will be trampled.
I will make it a wasteland.
It will not be pruned or weeded;
thorns and briers will grow up.
I will also give orders to the clouds
that rain should not fall on it.
For the vineyard of the Lord of Hosts
is the house of Israel,
and the men of Judah,
the plant He delighted in.
He looked for justice
but saw injustice,
for righteousness,
but heard cries of wretchedness.
Prayer - as we seek to understand and apply this passage to our lives, speak to us as we interpret your word.
Jesus begins to tell a parable. As he begins, he goes down what seems to be a familiar route. A parable which the religious rulers have heard. The expected not merely a parable of Jesus, but for him to quote verbatim a parable of Isaiah.

Woe to those who add house to house
and join field to field
until there is no more room
and you alone are left in the land.
I heard the Lord of Hosts say:
Indeed, many houses will become desolate,
grand and lovely ones without inhabitants.
For a ten-acre vineyard will yield
only six gallons,
and 10 bushels of seed will yield
only one bushel.

The beginning of this parable is an illusion to . Thus as Jesus began this parable, the religious authorities likely thought that his point was going to be consistent with , that the tribe of Israel is fruitless. That the father has done everything in his power to promote the success of Israel, but the people have squandered it.
There is a shift,
Jesus is a God who turns things around.
Jesus turns the
As Jesus flips Isaiah’s parable of the vineyard on its head to point out their sin, he also will flip your life around to force you to acknowledge your sin.
Jesus spoke against the pursuit of pride, power, and profit.
This was the motivation of the vine growers. What took the form as a sin of the heart becomes a sin of the hand, as the vine growers heart came to life and they injured the servants and murdered the son.
Ultimately, what will happen? God is sovereign, he will either work through through the evil intentions of some or he will overturn the powers to protect his people.
There is a shift occuring in this passage. Gods chosen, Israel, as it is called in the Bible, is shifting from being the direct decedents of Jacob, also called Isreal to the Church of Jesus.
America is not the new Isreal, the church is.
Acknowledgement of sin is offensive to those who live in it.
Of course, we know that Jesus wasn’t speaking about actual vine growers as verse 1 states that this is a parable Jesus was telling them. Jesus points out that the religious leaders of Israel were consumed in sin. seeking after pride power and profit.
Acknowledgement of sin is offensive, but I think Alcoholics Anonymous had a well informed step one - Admit you have a problem. (HISTORY ON AA? IS IT CHRISTIAN INFORMED? IF SO MENTION THE LIFE CHANGE IT HAS BROUGHT. MAYBE IF HAS DEPARTED FROM CHRISTIANITY, MENTION THE DEPARTURE OF PSYCHOLOGY, ETC FROM CHRISTIAN INFLUENCE.)
APPLICATION - Some of you out there today are struggling in sin.
There is hope, for the one whom was rejected and killed has become the cornerstone of true faith

The beginning of ps 118 is a song of praise before the Lord - “Give thanks to the lord, for He is good, his love endures forever...”
22 The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.
23 This came from the Lord;
it is wonderful in our eyes.
24 This is the day the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Lord, save us!
Lord, please grant us success!
26 He who comes in the name
of the Lord is blessed.
From the house of the Lord we bless you.
27 The Lord is God and has given us light.

You are my God; I will exalt You.

What is the significance of the cornerstone?

But you may ask, how can a dead son be the hope and cornerstone of true faith?
GOSPEL.
Focus on resurrection!
Sin manifests itself not only in our actions but in our heart. God can renew your mind -

PRAYER - Maybe Jesus has flipped your life upside down to try to get you to acknowledge your need for Him? Maybe you are suffering with sin. It may be sin of the heart, but it also may have manifested itself in your hand already. Maybe you need to confess your sin today and turn to seek God. Maybe you have found this message offensive today, i plead with you to look in your heart for the root of why you are offended. But maybe you just need some hope. Regardless of what you are going through today, Jesus has a cure for you. Maybe you have come the the point where you realize you need to build your life around the true faith of Jesus Christ. It doesn't matter if you grew up in the church or grew up away from God; it doesn’t matter if you are living in complete surrender to the pursuit of Christ or living in complete surrender to the pursuit of science; Christ came so that if you put your faith in Him, you too can inherit eternal life. The point is, no matter who you are or where you are from, God has a gift for you. You simply need to trust and obey him.
The point is, no matter who you are or where you are from, God has a gift for you.
