This retreat - members, leaders, volunteers. Challenge everybody…it’s a step back and a rest time in the presence of the Lord to hear what He has to say, a revival, a re-fuelling from the Holy Spirit.

Body

When the Israelites returned to Jerusalem from exile in Babylon and were discouraged at the smallness of the foundations for the new temple and the greatness of the task before them. The Lord sent his prophet Zechariah to encourage Zerubbabel and the people with the promises of His Word.

“Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has sent me. Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”

We all have gone through many stages in our lives and most of those stages is were we tend to despise small things.

Pastor Eric Hausler pointed out why we have the tendency to despise small things

Because small beginnings don’t appear successful. We tend to like the big scene, the big program, the big building, the finished product, just as the people in Zechariah’s day. They scoffed at the small beginnings of the rebuilding of the temple.

Because small beginnings are hard. They require work and we are prone to spiritual laziness. In a small church plant, you can’t just blend in with the big crowd like at a big church and be an anonymous by-stander. Everyone’s participation is needed ().

Because we tend to think the small things are unimportant. But every great work of the Lord starts out small!  Small beginnings take faith in the promises of God, and we’d much rather rather live by sight ().

We tend to despise the day of small beginnings because we’re often surrounded by negative, grumpy, adversarial people who prefer to find faults and delight in criticism rather than looking for evidences of God’s grace…and they discourage us!  It was by grace that the children of Israel were brought back from exile to rebuild the temple, so Zechariah commands Zerubbabel to shout, “Grace!” to the mountains of rubble.

Let’s not despise...

Flock Welfare

A shepherd’s primary responsibility is the safety and welfare of the flock. Some flocks may include as many as 1,000 sheep.

The shepherd will

graze the animals,

herding them to areas of good forage,

and keeping a watchful eye out for poisonous plants.

Shepherds will have to be almost beside their sheeps to keep watch on them.

Protecting From Predators

2. Small boy against a giant - for God’s name to be known

So this time, when David’s brother were among King Saul’s army, he was tending their sheep while going back and forth to his brothers to bring food and to bring back a report to his father on how they are doing.

3. From being a shepherd boy to a mighty King to rule God’s people

So, from being a shepherd boy, anointed by Samuel in secret, defeated Goliath, went through a lot because Saul was so jealous, experienced to be a commander in the army,

David had been anointed king at the tender age of 17, but only sat on the throne at the age of 30. That is a long gap.

As a teenager, he had been given a promise. A bonafide prophet had come along, snubbed each and every one of his brothers, and been instructed by God, no less, to declare that he would be king.

Sacred oil was poured over him to testify to the fact. Little did little David know, it would be many long years before that day would come, and the time in between was going to be very, very tough.

It was during those years that David learned how to handle a crisis,

love his enemies,

honor authority,

do justly,

love mercy,

and walk humbly with his God.

17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king of Israel, they mobilized all their forces to capture him. But David was told they were coming, so he went into the stronghold.

It took a while, and when he became king, guess what? It’s the BIGGER THINGS now, the small things was just the beginning.

It seemed terrible, endless, disastrous, tragic and scary for those thirteen years of bootcamp, but those hard times were exactly what made David so great during his forty year reign.

It took a while, and when he became king, guess what? His “small things” became an instrument to understand the BIG difference and prepared him for the BIGGER THINGS to come.

because we get to pray for one another’s present situation. Remember, this retreat will help us to reflect on our present situation as a church member, a volunteer, a leader.

HUDDLE QUESTIONS

You are now a member or an attendee of your present church, you have have been faithful in doing your part, the “small things” that you are contributing to further His Kingdom, do you feel that it seems you are going nowhere with and why? Share your thoughts in your group.

Do you feel that you are despising the small things that you see in your church? Is it because you see that there are contributing factors such as negative people/person? What will your decision be so that you can be part of the small things and be prepared to make a big difference.

So we all know that God will not twist our arm, he will not control us, but we also know if we are really a child of God, our normal tendency is to follow Christ and do His bidding.

We are called to be a part of His kingdom for others to know more about him. We are not just to sit down on the sidelines and watch, we are called to take action.

While I was writing the thoughts God was giving...

Actually there’s two things or points about big things first if you are coming from the small things and not or if you are in the big things now but I want to address the big things first you are in the big things I want to encourage you to understand and let’s go deeper and turn into study about how to manage big things.

He is always showing me that the BIG thing concerns the totality of our whole christian being.

The way we speak

The way we conduct our lives

Our faith

For example: If I’m not done criticizing my fellow men, (this is the “small things” in our life) then I need to step up and live a life that is worthy of Christ’s name.

It all boils down on how we live THIS LIFE, NOW!!!

GOD HAS GIVEN US EVERY OPPORTUNITY SO THAT WE CAN LIVE A LIFE THAT MAGNIFIES HIS NAME, BUT THE QUESTION IS, HOW DO WE MANAGE THAT OPPORTUNITY.

Let’s say we failed Him, because He desires that we have a consecrated life...

Remember:

Romans 12:1–2 NLT

1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Most often than not, we miss the mark, we fail Him. How do we manage that failure??

We all believe that God blesses us tremendously, right?

If we fail, his word says:

1 John 1:9 NLT

9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

He’s faithful and just to forgive our sins . . .. THAT’S BLESSING RIGHT!!!

So the point I want to show everybody here is that, GOD ALWAYS DOES HIS PART!!!

SO WHAT ABOUT OUR PART!!

Matthew 25

1st servant - 5 bags of silver

2nd servant - 2 bags

3rd servant - 1 bag

Both the 1st and 2nd servant invested what was given to them and doubled what was given to them, while the 3rd servant didn’t do a thing about what he have and gained nothing in the end.

This talks about being a GOOD STEWARD of what GoD has given us.

Two words kept repeating when the master acknowledge the 1st and the 2nd servant - GOOD AND FAITHFUL!!!

Do we agree that God knows all of us individually?

He knows who we are, right? 139 - “from our mother’s womb...’?

So He knows our ability - He -gives it to us -

He knows our capabilities?

And we know, each one of us here, knows WHAT God has given us, and WHY He gave it to us? RIGHT?

10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 11 Do you have the gift of speaking? Aren’t we so privileged!!! (ROUSE UP THE CONGREGATION) God has given us everything and it’s up to us how we take care of that.

Like I said this morning, the Christian walk is really an individual thing, the evidence of our spiritual growth really is a personal matter, it’s not dependent on anybody else. It’s between you and God.

13 The next day, Moses took his seat to hear the people’s disputes against each other. They waited before him from morning till evening. 14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?” 15 Moses replied, “Because the people come to me to get a ruling from God. 16 When a dispute arises, they come to me, and I am the one who settles the case between the quarreling parties. I inform the people of God’s decrees and give them his instructions.” 17 “This is not good!” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed. 18 “You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself. 19 Now listen to me, and let me give you a word of advice, and may God be with you. You should continue to be the people’s representative before God, bringing their disputes to him. 20 Teach them God’s decrees, and give them his instructions. Show them how to conduct their lives.

Humility - let’s stay humble.

Jesus didn’t make a list of His triumphs, He stayed quiet, only in the background as souls get saved, sick got healed and dead got raised, He always says, He is just doing the will of the Father.

Things will unfold quickly after tonight because you will be on fire, souls will be harvested, discipled and sent out, but you are only a vehicle, God made that to happen, the Holy Spirit equipped you and you will never be the same again.

I believe that the Big Difference that should be evident in our lives is not just a one time experience, it should be seen and witnessed in our lives, and that will happen if we constantly soak ourselves in His presence.

Stop despising the small things and start focusing on the race in front of you and witness the BIG difference that will come. Don’t blame others for your failure to walk according to what Christ wants for you, it’s time to be disciplined and to start a fresh, a revived heart, were you aim to win the prize no matter what the cost.
