Sanctification

1 Corinthians 15:1–2 NASB95
Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
We have been saved, (Justification), we are being saved (Sanctification) and we will be saved (Glorification).
Justification is God looking at us “just-as-if” we had never sinned. - tony Lane
Justification is our legal standing before God. Sanctification deals with the reality of our current situation. Glorification deals with the final state.
Justification is the cause, Sanctification is the evidence.
Faith brings our acceptance before God, works prove our faith at the last judgment.

The Importance of Works

Works are the basis for God’s judgment in the end.
2 Corinthians 5:10 NASB95
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
Romans 2:6–8 NASB95
who will render to each person according to his deeds: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation.
Is this a contradiction? I thought we were justified by faith through grace.
Is it our works that save us?
We can only truly understand works in light of justification. Justification provides the basis from which good works can flow.
Should we strive for good works?
1 Timothy 4:10 NASB95
For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.
Colossians 1:28–29 NASB95
We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.
Colossians 1:
YES! We should strive for good works but Justification tells us why. Many people commit good works, but it’s important to remember the relationship between works and faith. Faith produce works.
From the surface how can you tell if a plant is producing good fruit? You see and taste the fruit.
Keith Millers roma tomato plants. the plant looks fine but doesn’t have enough calcium. the ends fo the tomato get destroyed. the plany looks good but the fruit are all spoiled.
The proof is in the pudding. Look at the fruit.
Matt 7:16-
Matthew 7:16–23 NASB95
“You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? “So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. “A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. “So then, you will know them by their fruits. “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
These people look like strong trees! On the outside they meet the criteria, but inwardly they are broken, how do we know? Because they produce bad fruit!
Sanctification seeks to continue the work of justification by producing in us good fruit.
How do we produce good fruit? By doing the will of God.
What is the Will of God?
The Lord’s prayer, “Your Kingdom come, your will be done.”
God’s will is to bring heaven down to earth.
If you want to know how to accomplish God’s will, learn what heaven is like.
Heaven is a place of rest and peace. A place of no sin and destruction. A place where we will enjoy the presence of God.
This means you have to daily realize our inability to accomplish God’s will.
A couple of Questions?

If we are saved in the past why do I need to live a disciplined and pure life now?

The proof is in the pudding.
this is called Antinomianism, Paul deals with this in Romans and Galatians.
ANTINOMIANISM. The conviction that believers are freed from the demands of God’s law by depending upon God’s grace for their salvation (thus anti “against” + nomos “law”)
ANTINOMIANISM. The conviction that believers are freed from the demands of God’s law by depending upon God’s grace for their salvation (thus anti “against” + nomos “law”)
Wall, R. W. (1992). Antinomianism. In D. N. Freedman (Ed.), The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary (Vol. 1, p. 263). New York: Doubleday.
Romans 6:1–2 NASB95
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
Galatians 5:16–25 NASB95
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
We must understand salvation in its totality not just one aspect. If we neglect one aspect of salvation it will become evident in our theology.
Antinomian - Reject the importance of works. (Sanctification)
Pharisee - Neglect the aspect of justification (Grace)
What happens when we reject Glorification?
We will not seek to bring God’s kingdom to earth. We will value the earth less. We will value the environment that God is going to redeem less.
We want to share the gospel because it will have eternal consequences.
It will affect our evangelism because we know one day we will stand before God.
Break

Is it possible to lose ones salvation?

Remember our two systems Calvinism/Arminianism
Calvinist Understanding
“The perseverance of the saints means that all those who are truly born again will be kept by God’s power and will persevere as Christians until the end of their lives, and that only those who persevere until the end have truly been born again.”:
Wayne Grudem
Calvinist Favorite passages
John 6:3 NASB95
Then Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples.
John 6:38–40 NASB95
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. “This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
John 6:28-40
John 10:27–29 NASB95
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
John 10:27-
8-40

Only those who persevere are truly born again.

Hebrews 3:14 NASB95
For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end,
Matthew 10:22 NASB95
“You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.
1 John 2:9 NASB95
The one who says he is in the Light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now.
Many will look like Christians but in reality are not.
This text is the battle ground for whether or not you can lose your salvation.
Hebrews 6:4–6 NASB95
For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.
Calvinist Interpretation
Wayne Grudem
“Enlightened” simply means they came to understand the truths of the gospel.
Hebrews 10:32 NASB95
But remember the former days, when, after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings,
Arminian: Enlightened means they engaged with the gospel and it played the part of salvation in the persons life.
Hebrews 10:32 NASB95
But remember the former days, when, after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings,
Hebrews 10:34 NASB95
For you showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and a lasting one.
To the Arminian “enlightenment” seems to point to a specific time of salvation.
“Tasted the Heavenly Gift.”
Grudem: “Tasting is temporary and one might or might not decide to accept the thing that is tasted”
Matthew 27:34 NASB95
they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.
Matt
Jesus tasted but did not drink.
Arminian: tasted is showing how a person has fully engaged with the gospel and actually experienced it in their lives.
Hebrews 2:9 NASB95
But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.
“Partake”
Hebrews 3:14 NASB95
For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end,
Hebrews
Arminian Favorites:
1 Timothy 1:9 NASB95
realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers
1 Timothy 1:19 NASB95
keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.
Hebrews 10:26–27 NASB95
For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.
Some in the church are falling away from the faith and going back to Judaism.
Philippians 2:12–13 NASB95
So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
1 Peter 5:8–9 NASB95
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.
the Parable of the Sower
Luke 8:4–15 NASB95
When a large crowd was coming together, and those from the various cities were journeying to Him, He spoke by way of a parable: “The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled under foot and the birds of the air ate it up. “Other seed fell on rocky soil, and as soon as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. “Other seed fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out. “Other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as great.” As He said these things, He would call out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” His disciples began questioning Him as to what this parable meant. And He said, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. “Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. “Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved. “Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away. “The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity. “But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.
