Illustration: Praying more Frequently lately
Illustration: Praying more Frequently lately
It feels as though I am praying more frequently lately, and the more I have been praying, the more I find myself praying what seems to be a typical prayer.
“God I want you to heal my Grandma, but I pray that your will be done.”
“God I desire that you heal this person, but your will be done.”
“God I pray that you would use this sermon to draw people to faith in Christ, but your will be done.”
If Im honest, at times that is hard to pray.
God your will be done.
We come to this portion of the Lord’s prayer and it is not doubt calling us to action just like the previous portions of the prayer have done.
“Our Father” calls us to recognize our God as the one who has gloriously saved us and adopted us into his family.
“Who art in Heaven” calls us to recognize that he is indeed above us and he is the one who rule from heaven. It refers to His transcendence. He is above us but he is also with us.
“Hallowed be your name” calls us to ask God to make His name Holy in the earth, in our churches, in our lives, and that we would seek with all our hearts to keep his name Holy and not in vain.
now we come to verse 10 in
‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.
I want you to understand what’s going on here in this prayer.
We Americans pride ourselves on living in a democracy, but as Christians we live in a kingdom, one that is actively ruled by the King of kings. His reign is ongoing. Jesus is King at this moment. He is on His throne even now.
What exactly are we asking when we pray, “Your kingdom come.”
Isn’t God already King? Isn’t He already sovereign? Does he not already posses the ends of the earth and everything in between? Of course He does.
A Psalm of David. The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it. For He has founded it upon the seas And established it upon the rivers. Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood And has not sworn deceitfully. He shall receive a blessing from the Lord And righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of those who seek Him, Who seek Your face—even Jacob. Selah. Lift up your heads, O gates, And be lifted up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in! Who is the King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O gates, And lift them up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in! Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah.
The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it. For He has founded it upon the seas And established it upon the rivers. Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place?
However, it also true that sin has came into the world and created absolute chaos, where we in our depravity have turned aside and have gone away from the King.
In the New Testament and prophesied in the Old Testament, the idea of kingdom is inextricably connected to the King.
The Kingdom of God is ruled by God’s King, and God’s King is the one who he has exalted to the right hand of the Father.
Jesus is King.
The late RC Sproul said this:
“We Americans pride ourselves on living in a democracy, but as Christians we live in a kingdom, one that is actively ruled by the King of kings. His reign is ongoing. Jesus is King at this moment. He is on His throne even now.” RC Sproul
Jesus tells us to pray here that The Kingdom would come.
What we are asking to happen is that the rule and reign of Christ would come to be realized in three ways:
In our hearts.
That we would submit to his kingship.
Actions, Words, Everything
The way we treat others. Your wife. Your husband. Your children.
The way we speak.
The way we view our money.
The way we view church.
Here is a question that may reveal your heart in ways that you may not be ready to handle:
You pick something in your life.
Is Jesus’s reign noticeably affecting my life in this area?
or are you and i living as if his kingship means nothing?
Bear in mind what we are asking to happen. We readily admit that Jesus’s future perfect reign will be fully realized later at the time when his consummates HIs kingdom in His return. We long for that which is not yet.
But please hear me, Jesus has been glorified. He is reigning and his kingship should already be a realization in our own hearts and lives.
But right now, we live
In the church.
Is Christ’s kingdom and kingship evident in our local church?
Does Christ’s word have supreme authority in our local church? Or is it your experience?
Well I don’t like this I don’t like that.
Before that comes off our lips, lets ask ourselves the question: Whose kingdom is this glorifying?
Example: Watching videos today of men I once respected falling into the trap of thinking God is giving them new words from God. They have forgotten whose word matters in the church.
Christ is king and his kingdom is made manifest at this point and time through those who have been brought into the kingdom by grace through faith.
In those who are currently apart from Christ.
We pray that his kingdom would come in the lives of those who are currently in rebellion against the one true and righteous king.
Why?
Because they will submit to him now.
Or they they will submit to Him later.
We pray that they will recognize Christ as the rightful King over their lives.
Your will be done
Your will be done
Not to us, O Lord, not to us, But to Your name give glory Because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth. Why should the nations say, “Where, now, is their God?” But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.
He has told us His will for us.
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
Some may ask “why pray if God is sovereign?”
I would ask the question: Why would you pray if he is not sovereign?
The reason we pray is because we are putting our hope in the only one who really has control of the situation.
We align our hearts with God’s will.
Jesus did this.
saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
But what happens when we don’t pray like this.
In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.
Romans 8:26-
In this we see the will of through our prayer.
In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
We pray and God perfects our prayers through the spirit who intercedes for us based upon the will of God.
The will of God is the actor and action in our salvation.
He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
Romans 8
When we pray and we ask for God’s will to be done, we are ultimately asking for our good, which is defined by God’s will and purpose in salvation.
This is the will of God on earth as it is in heaven.
Our salvation begins and ends in heaven.
