2 Timothy 3:1 ESV
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.
, Acts 2:17-21
Heb 1:1-2
Hebrews 1:1–2 ESV
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
These last days are already happening.
Godly living will not be easy. What makes it difficulty or hard is from those who are in opposition or those who don’t know God.
2 Timothy 3:2–5 ESV
For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
2 Tim 3:
These characteristics listed in . Description of the natural man.
people - anthropos - men and women.
self vs others. They love self and hate others in every one of the sins in the list.
lovers of self - self focused, narcissistic
Philippians 2:21 ESV
For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.
lovers of money - obsessed with wealth.
philagaros - those who place money above God. Even willing to kill to make profit
proud - boastful. people who are preoccupied, wanting others to notice them, seek attention from others for their own glory. to exalt themselves.
arrogant - similar to proud - view themselves higher than others. hyper - above something. Eg. hyperventilating. A cut above the rest. The state of the mind in placing themselves above others. Opposite to the mind of Christ - that of humility.
abusive - blasphemers, tear down, speak evil, cursing someone
disobedient to parents - rebellion
- 5th commandment to honour the parents. This commandment doesn’t mean anything
ungrateful - feel entitled and when they don’t receive it, they become angry rather than thankful.
unholy - having no desire to live in God’s ways. These people are immersed in the fallen world. They’re living the way the world expects them to live. Without fear of God
heartless - Their heart is more like a heart of stone than heart of flesh. They have no compassion. Opposite of love is apathy or indifference.
Without natural affection - devoid of natural human affection. Callused.
Unappeasable - similar to ungrateful. These people cannot be convinced to agree with anything. God no longer holds the sin against us
God no longer holds the sin against us
Slanderous - false accusers. In Gk. - diabolic - Satan who is the false accuser
without self control - incontinent. Self control is a fruit of the Spirit.
brutal - could refer physical violent or to wild or uncontrolled attitude.
not loving good - against love
John 15:18–25 ESV
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’
treacherous - Judas Iscariot. carries the idea of surrender?
reckless - act first than think later
reckless - act first than think later
Acts 19:36 ESV
Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash.
swollen with conceit - blinded by their own self worth
lovers of pleasure - hedonism - live my life to the full - not wanting to submit their life to God. They don’t see that their life is fleeting and their soul will live in for eternity. Sensual kind of pleasure. In KJV - lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.
Hebrews 11:25 ESV
choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
having the appearance of godliness but denying its power
conduct nullifies their claims of faith. Denying - same word used here as in
2 Timothy 2:12 ESV
if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us;
2 Tim 2:12
having the appearance of godliness is not the same as submitting to the power of godliness.
- having the religion but not having a legitimate relationship with God. Choosing when to obey God and when to dismiss God’s instructions.
Matthew 23:27 ESV
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.
Matthew 7:13–14 ESV
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Sin within the church - doing more damage than persecution from without. Like gangrene
Like gangrene
Avoid such people - what it doesn’t mean. Paul is not saying to not preach the Gospel to them. Not physical distance. Does it man to not have fellowship with such people. Not have fellowship with darkness
2 Corinthians 6:14–18 ESV
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”
2 Cor 6:14-18
Avoid people - not just what they are doing but the people themselves.
Don’t follow these people. It doesn’t mean to not be kind to them. Timothy must be able to identify them outwardly. These characteristics must be manifest in one way or another.
How they behave and interact with others will be nothing like Jesus Christ.
Why is Jesus Christ worthy of being followed?
heb 2:14
Hebrews 2:14 ESV
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 2:15 ESV
and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
