To the choirmaster: according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David. 1 Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone; for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man. 2 Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak. 3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, 4 those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is master over us?” 5 “Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the Lord; “I will place him in the safety for which he longs.” 6 The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times. 7 You, O Lord, will keep them; you will guard us from this generation forever. 8 On every side the wicked prowl, as vileness is exalted among the children of man.

A. They Lie
A. They Lie
2 Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
God Hates Lying
16 There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.

Lying is not allowed in the New Heaven
God judges those that lie
27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Flattery means “smooth talking.”

8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

D. They Defy God

4 those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is master over us?”
The ungodly man may deny Christ now but one day his knee will bow
10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,
11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,
David’s response here is to pray for God to bring judgement upon these that are ungodly
4 those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is master over us?”
3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts,
David then begins to contrast the ungodly man with God Himself, and reality, joy, and confidence settle in once again!

There is a final reality check:
8 On every side the wicked prowl, as vileness is exalted among the children of man.
This world can and will become very wicked, especially toward believers. God’s protection, purity, and preservation are what keep us encouraged in the midst of those things.
Godliness may seem to cease, but God always remains the same!
