Those who are saved by Christ savor Christ

Introduction

Our passage continues with rejecting Christ, not on the basis of who Christ is, but because of who He isn’t.

So there is still problems that Pharisees have with Christ’s association with sinners.

And as we’ve looked at previously, there are two groups of people who are exposed by the context of Luke.

And this passage exposes two kinds of people. And the kind of person you want to be tonight is the point of the text:

Those who are saved by Christ savor Christ.

And what I mean by savor is just like when you eat extremely good tasting food.

And you chew the food slowly so that the flavor stays in your mouth longer,

And you have more time to enjoy the taste of the food.

So we can see in our passage here, how it is that this woman savored Christ and showed she is saved by Christ,

And how the Pharisee did not savor Christ. But he rejected Christ not because of who Jesus is, but because of who Jesus isn’t.

So here are some ways in which those who are saved by Christ savor Christ:

Those who are Saved by Christ Savor Christ Visibly

This woman goes to the Pharisees home. And in the presence of a Pharisee who would, obviously, not tolerate her or her behavior,

Even though her behavior here isn’t sinful.

Her behavior here is reverential. She is not welcome to be this close.

And she is not concerned with who is watching because she is savoring Christ.

Those who are Saved by Christ Savor Christ Emotionally

It’s not true that she’s sad, these are probably tears of joy and excitement.

But she is probably moved to tears by who Jesus is, what He says, and what He does.

Those who are Saved by Christ Savor Christ Devotionally

What she’s doing in washing and kissing Christ’s feet is an act of the highest devotion and reverence.

This is technically worship.

Those who are Saved by Christ Savor Christ As Worthy

She didn’t poor the olive oil which was way cheaper. She used expensive perfume.

She weight the worth of perfume, which was a lot, compared to the worth of Christ.

And there was no comparison. She didn’t savor the perfume. She savored Christ.

And she viewed the perfume as on the same level as anointing oil.

The Pharisee does Not savor Christ

He doesn’t even bother anointing Christ’s head. That would have been less reverential, and he couldn’t even do minimal enjoying of Christ.

But also demonstrated that he wasn’t even interested in valuing Christ at all with basic treatments of a guest.

The Parable that Christ provides gives explanation.

The woman was forgiven much.

The more you realize how much Christ has forgiven you the more you savor Christ.
