But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband
Paul speaks of two sorrows here.
2 Corinthians 7:10
2 Sorrows
For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.
1. Without Regret, leading toward Salvation
1. Without Regret, leading toward Salvation
False repentance
2. Of the world, producing death.
There is a such thing as False repentance
The sorrow of the world produces death.
Now this is dead works.
The sorrow of the world produces death
lets look at our text from last week
Hebrews 6:1 NASB95
Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
Not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works
Some bible example of this is
Dead works are
All religious activity that is done to cover sin.
Isaiah 64:6 NASB95
For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
For all of us have become like one who is unclean,
And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment;
Some bible example of this is
And all of us wither like a leaf,
And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
2. All works of the flesh.
Romans 8:8 NASB95
and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
and those who are in the flesh can not please God.
3. All work of suffering.
but the sorrow of the world produces death
2 Corinthians 7:10 NASB95
For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.
there is no substitute for repentance.
Man’s religious activity lifts him up in Pharisaical pride. Repentance realizes one’s own bankruptcy of righteousness and turns solely to God.
lets look at some bible example of dead works
Judas
Matthew 27:3–4 NASB95
Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See to that yourself!”
Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See to that yourself!”
False repentance will appear in 4 ways
1. A sense of guilt and remorse over the pain.
2. Regret for the consequences rather than the sin.
3. Strong fears of hell rather than conviction of sin.
4. Penitence where one atones for his sins through suffering.
There is a sorrow that does not lead to repentance.
True repentance turns from dead works.
Dead works are
1. All religious activity that is done to cover sin.
For all of us have become like one who is unclean,
And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment;
And all of us wither like a leaf,
And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
2. All works of the flesh.
and those who are in the flesh can not please God.
3. All work of suffering.
but the sorrow of the world produces death 1corthian 7:10
there is no substitute for repentance. Man’s religious activity lifts him up in Pharisaical pride. Repentance realizes one’s own bankruptcy of righteousness and turns solely to God.
God grace works according to the measure of repentance.
Romans 5:20 NASB95
The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
The deeper the work of repentance, the deeper the work of God’s grace in the life.
1. Repentance bring a hatred for sin.
Key to overcoming sin is a hatred for sin.
Hebrews 1:9 NASB95
You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness above Your companions.”
“YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS;
THEREFORE GOD, YOUR GOD, HAS ANOINTED YOU
WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS ABOVE YOUR COMPANIONS.”
2. Repentance come by being focused on His grace.
a. God’s goodness cause one to repent.
Romans 2:4 NASB95
Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?
Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?
b. The reign of grace comes as one turns from his sin.
Romans 5:21 NASB95
so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
God’s grace works through repentance. The reign of grace in ones’s life come through an attitude of repentance reflected by a humble and meek spirit.
Sin and grace do not reign together rather grace will rule out sin.
Repentance is the message of the people. For there to be a healthy relationship it must include repentance.
Luke 24:47 NASB95
and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Repentance prepare the way of the lord.
Mark 1:3 NASB95
The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ready the way of the Lord, Make His paths straight.’ ”
THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS,
`MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD,
MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.’ ”
1. God will only come in on a straight path .
2. Making the path straight is man’s responsibility.
Repentance prepares the heart to receive the Gospel.
1. The gospel is to be received with brokenness.
“And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.”
Matthew 21:44 NASB95
“And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.”
The stubbornness and rebellion oif the heart must be broken in order for the gospel to have power.
2. The gospel is received with submission.
Matthew 3:2 NASB95
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
The Kingdom denotes submission authority. Repentance prepares the heart for God rule.
Repentance is the first responds of man to the Gospel.
The message is repent and believe
Mark 1:15 NASB95
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
True repentance must always go with true faith.
Acts 20:21 NASB95
solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
1. Faith is dead without repentance
2. Faith in Jesus as the Son of God does not save unless accompanied by repentance.
3. Faith is an empty profession without repentance.
4. Faith cannot work in an unrepentant heart.
5. Faith come out of the heart prepared by repence.
6. “only believe” is not the messge of the Bible.
“I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
Luke 13:3 NASB95
