Jesus is a difficult character to grasp… so much doesn’t make sense. a conqueror with no army; a king with no land. Full of power and fire and glory, but prized meekness and humility.
Set us up to see the significance...
Intro: Humanity of Jesus
Why not show up in a blaze of glory? He was and is certainly entitled to it.
Humanity of Jesus
Thinking of view of Jesus as a kid...
Didn’t hurt; God protected him from pain.
of course he obeyed; He Was God!
Bible teaches that he was: tempted, hungry, thirsty, weary, sorrowful, he cried out.
Philippians 2:6–8 ESV
who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Why obedient to death??
Philippians 2:6
Hebrews 2:9–13 ESV
But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.”
Hebrews 2
Hebrews 2:14–18 ESV
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Hebrews 2:14
HE HAD TO.
Necessary that he be like us.
Sacrifice must be a true substitute.
why blood of bulls and goats not a full and final substitute...
[Deity vs. Humanity.]
Lesson of baptism...
Jesus obeyed and served by the power of the Holy Spirit.
We have the same Spirit.
Matthew 3:13–14 ESV
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
Matthew 3:13
From: Nazareth in Galilee… northern Palestine, influenced by greek culture; alex the great; hellenization.... undesirables (compared to Jerusalem).
JtB’s baptism was for repentance… he rightly recognized Jesus as the sinless one.. the one who was here to take away the sin of the world.
I would have said the same thing… no, no, no… You baptize me!
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Matthew 3:15
Matthew 3:15 ESV
But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.
obedience; submission to the Father’s perfect and righteous will.
not just absence of sin… possession of all positive aspects of righteousness.
Romans 5:18–19 ESV
Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
Romans 5
Matthew 3:16–17 ESV
And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Matthew 3
John 1:42 ESV
He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).
John 1:32 ESV
And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.
Spirit of God as a dove rests upon him. First Spirit-baptized man.
Perfect unity, and perfect power.
“flow” psychological concept:
full immersion, full focus, full involvement, full enjoyment. Complete absorption, evidenced by losing track/sense of time.
Exact representation of God;
Jesus:
Acts 1:5 ESV
for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Romans 6:11 ESV
So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Acts 2:38 ESV
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
HS come upon you...
Romans 8:9–10 ESV
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
life and peace (8:6)
Romans 8:11 ESV
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Romans 8:9
1 Corinthians 12:13 ESV
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
Unity.
Jesus as model means submitting to God, being baptized, receiving the Spirit and living by the spirit.
