A Meeting at a place of need.
A Meeting at a place of need.
Wells are where you went for water. People need water, crops needs water, animals need water, livestock needs water. So a well is a symbolic place where we have our needs met. And in our message today, a woman goes to a well looking for something or m someone to bring satisfaction and meaning to her life.
Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
Looking for Meaning in all the wrong places.
Looking for Meaning in all the wrong places.
1: The World - Materialism
1: The World - Materialism
The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
This was not theb first time, nor would it be the last time the woman found herself burdened at a well tring to find satiusfaction. Her words show us that she is tired of the constant trips to the well for water.
How wonderful to never have to mke the trip, to never hve to lower the bucket, to never have to heave the heavy water and to never hve to carry it all the way home ever again!
Materilsm and consuerism or all the same thing - a focus on things, or externals to try nd find happiness and contentment.
The problem is what you buy today at the well of materilsm, does not satify you and have to come back later and agin and again.
He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
But its not just silver and gold, its beauty and look and youth and popularity.
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
The bucket of water is a weight, lowering it, raising it and carrying i, and the well of materilm you have to keeo going back.
Worldliness is simnply when you adopt the worlds value system and start believing that what the world or culture says is impostarnt is important.
But that is a weight and a burden that offers no releaf. We must lay aside the weight not keep going back.
The weight that money is so important and that stuff is worth debt.
And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Or the weight of good looks, of looking a certain way or being a certan size. Eating disorders are part of this weight. 4 out 10 peole has an eating disorder, a weight of having to go back to the well of what the world says you must look like.
And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
2: The Flesh - Sexual Appetite
2: The Flesh - Sexual Appetite
The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
6 Sexual Partners. This woman like million of others thinks that sex will bring fulfilment and happiness.
Sex is not just a physical act. It is and will always be a deep spierirtual connecting.
And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
There is a life long bond between those people.
Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
Not only does casual sex NOT satisfy but it also joins you to that person.
“Thats ok, I love them” - Never have sex with a person you love, have sex with the person you marry.
Another weight of chasing sexual gratification is addiction.
70% of mean vist a porn site at least 1 a month.
If you have to vist a porn site one a month, maybe one a week, some men every day, then what does tghat tell you about the water of sexual gratification? Thats its totally unsatisfyimng, that why you have to keep going back.
3: Religion - Seeking Spiritual enlightenment.
3: Religion - Seeking Spiritual enlightenment.
And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
This is clearly a spiritual woman. By spiritul i dont mean “saved” or Christian, i mean she believes in a spiritual side of life.
And she hopes that religion can help her find meaning and satisfaction.
religiojn is the treadmill of disatisfaction - you will never be good enough.
To see wherather being religious makes you content, just look at the pharasies.
The pharasies were the religious elete. They were regared as the most religious people at that time. There devotion was imprcible. They had rules for dress, eating, how to get dressed, bathing, walking, teaching.
If religious could have you satisfied then the pharasies should have been the most content, fulfilled peolpme on earth. But what did Jesus say about their inner life?
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
Dead inside. Dead and empty, filled with nothing but bonmes, rotteness and bitterness.
But I know there is Something more to life!
But I know there is Something more to life!
Soi this woman, like many of us has visted many wells, and all have disapointed. But she knows that life is more than this.
There must be. Born suffer and die.
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
What does the woman say:
The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
Her words are a powerful cry for meaning.
I know, that somehere at sometime I will find a person who will bring TOTAL Satisfaction to my life. I have been searching in wrong places.
Jesus Answered:
Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
