There is one thing that will make a difference in life. It is the anointing of God upon you. It is the thing that separates believer from unbeliever. It is the experience that solidifies knowledge of where we stand in our relationship with God.
1 John 2:20 NKJV
But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
It is the anointing! The baptism of the Holy Spirit! It is joy, peace, love, power, authority...
I want to talk with you today about the three anointings of the OT, the time Jesus danced, and what God desires for you.
In the Old Testament an anointing was special. It was always done for a specific and special purpose. It was not to make the person being anointed feel good.
The oil represented the touch of God. Anything that was anointed was set a part for God’s purpose. That oil represented His presence and His touch.
The oil used was always kept under lock and key. An average person was not to be given access to the oil of anointing. It was specifically to be used for the things of God. Most often it was used to anoint objects more than anything else. Everything that was to be put into service for God’s kingdom would be anointed...

The Priests Anointing

Exodus 40:13 NKJV
You shall put the holy garments on Aaron, and anoint him and consecrate him, that he may minister to Me as priest.
The anointing of the priest was calling the priest into the service of the house of the Lord.
The priests responsibility was of service to God. To minister before the Lord daily in the tabernacle. Dressing the lamps, burning of the incense, replenishing the table of shew bread.
It was an anointing of relationship. Given so a person could minister to the Lord.

The Kings Anointing

1 Samuel 10:1
1 Samuel 10:1 NKJV
Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: “Is it not because the Lord has anointed you commander over His inheritance?
The anointing of the King was a calling to serve God’s people.
It was never intended to be for the King to consider himself above the people. Samuel ask Saul - Is it not?
“What is your anointing really for? What are you going to do with it?” Saul is left to answer the question for himself.
The anointing of the King was for others!
Both the anointing of the priest and the king was only given to those who were chosen by God for a specific purpose. An average person could never have experienced the anointing as had the priest or king.
There was only one situation in which the average joe or sally could have been anointed.

The Lepers Anointing

Leviticus 14:29
Leviticus 14:29 NKJV
The rest of the oil that is in the priest’s hand he shall put on the head of him who is to be cleansed, to make atonement for him before the Lord.
The anointing was reserved only to anoint a priest or king, except for the cleansing of a leper.
Leprosy was viewed to have been the judgement of God for some sin that was present in the lepers life. Chapter 14 of Leviticus gives details of how a leper was to be cleansed from his or her leprosy.
It was a personal anointing… There was no fanfare surrounding the anointing of a leper. Family did not come out to witness this occasion. It was personal between the leper, the priest, and God.
God made a way of escape for the judged. A cleansing from sin.
In the NT, the baptism of the Holy Spirit or New Birth is a cleansing. It is a personal anointing that God has made available to all of us who are sinners.
2 Corinthians 1:21–22 NKJV
Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
2 Corinthians 1:21-22
Acts 2:38
Acts 2:38 NKJV
Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
In the OT the anointing oil was poured over the head of the one being anointed. In the NT the anointing is rubbed in.
1 John 2:20 NKJV
But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
The word that is translated as anointing in the greek is chrisma. It means to smear or rubbed in. The anointing you receive when you are baptised with the Holy Spirit is rubbed in.
Your effectiveness in God’s calling for your life will never be determined by what is poured out in a single moment. It will be determined by how long you linger and soak in the glory and presence of God.
How important is the experience of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
In the NT there is only the one anointing. The baptism of the Holy Spirit.
In that one experience is each of the OT anointings.
Cleansing for self - personal experience
Anointing of relationship - being able to minister before God.
Anointing of kingship - Authority in God’s kingdom for ministering to others.
What are you going to do with your anointing?
The only place where we see Jesus “get beside himself” is in .
Luke 10:17–21 NKJV
Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.
Rejoiced - began to leap for joy. Jesus was dancing!
Jesus danced because His disciples were using their authority that He had given them to take back their cities. To free people from the bondage of sickness, satan, and sin.
What are you going to do with your anointing?
