Trusting Jesus Now

It may surprise you to know that the Bible never encourages you to use an experience as proof of your salvation.  The Bible never points back to some time when you believed on Jesus Christ.

I hear people say, “If you cannot name the time and place when you received Christ, you’re not saved.”  That sounds good, but there’s just one thing wrong with it – you won’t find it in the Bible.  The Bible never says you can know you are saved by what you remember in the past.  Faith is always present tense.

If you want to know whether you are saved, ask yourself if you are believing in Jesus Christ right now.  Are you committed to Him?  Are you trusting Him today?

Please do not misunderstand.  I am not saying the time you received Christ is not important.  Unless you did that, you are not saved.  Praise God for the day and the hour of your salvation.  But that is not where assurance comes from.  The acid test is, are you now believing in Jesus Christ?  Are you trusting in Him at this moment with all of your heart and soul?

When I fly from Memphis to Dallas, for example, it’s not important that I recall the moment we crossed the Texas state line.  The proof that we flew into Texas is that I am now on the ground at DFW airport.  Those who came to Texas by car may know when they crossed the state line, but the proof that I crossed the state line is that I am now sitting in the airport in Dallas.

Correspondingly, the assurance that I am saved comes not from the fact that I did trust Christ, but that I am now trusting Christ.  I am now at this very moment trusting my eternal destiny to the One who gave all for me.
