Advent 2001 -3 The Coming Restoration

Reading: Amos 9:11-15; Luke 1:26-38

32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end. Luke 1:32-33 (NIV)

I.   Jesus comes to restore David’s House

     A.  David’s house became a fallen Shack

           1.  Tent=“booth” in other trans.

                 a.  House of David now just a lean-to

                 b.  House=his descendants, his royal line

           2.  The house has fallen because of invasion

                 a.  Surrounding peoples harassed them

                 b.  Finally Babylon took them captive

                 c.  We too are captives of our own folly

           3.  The house has fallen because of rebellion

                 a.  Israel forgot God and worshiped idols

                 b.  The people’s whose gods Israel worshiped came and took them captive

                 c.  God used the nations to punish Israel

     B.  Jesus comes to Fix Up the house

           1.  David’s house will be restored

                 a.  His palaces

                 b.  The place of honor he had

                 c.  His leadership of Israel

           2.  His royal line the way it was meant to be

                 a.  A man of integrity with a servant’s heart

                 b.  The legacy: man after God’s own heart

II.  Jesus comes to restore Israel

     A.  To restore Israel from Exile

           1.  She was waiting to come home

                 a.  In exile for all these years

                 b.  She cried out to God for deliverance

                 c.  God seemed slow in coming

           2.  Jesus comes to bring her home

                 a.  God does come in an unexpected way!

                 b.  He comes to bring us home: sin’s exiles

     B.  To restore Israel’s Kingdom

           1.  Israel will come home & rebuild (v.14)

                 a.  Rebuild her cities, her life as a nation

                 b.  Replant her crops & reap the blessings

                 c.  He comes to rebuild His people–us too!

           2.  Not just home: the kingdom reestablished

                 a.  To be built as it is supposed to be (v.11)

                 b.  To be a force again in her region (v.12)

                 c.  He comes preaching the Kingdom!

           3.  Israel’s oppressors will be dealt with (v.12)

                 a.  Edom will be under Israel’s thumb

                 b.  All the other nations too!

                 c.  Even Satan himself will be defeated!

     C.  To restore Israel’s Land

           1.  To give Israel her land back (v.15)

                 a.  She will return to the promised land

                 b.  She will go home

                 c.  We will go home

           2.  Make her land more fertile than ever (v.13)

                 a.  The reaper overtakes the plowman! (?)

                 b.  Before the planting is done, the harvest!

III. Jesus comes to reign Forever

     A.  His kingdom will Never End

           1.  Jesus will fulfill in Himself God’s promise

                 a.  To Abraham to be a light to all nations

                 b.  To David, that his line would never end

                 c.  To A & E: the serpent’s head crushed

           2.  Only Jesus can be an everlasting King

                 a.  Only the Son of the Most High can last

                 b.  He alone can fulfill our desire for a King

           3.  Only Jesus’ Kingdom will be “fall-proof”

                 a.  He alone will/can never falter

                 b.  He will always remain faithful

     B.  He will reign over all Nations (v.12)

           1.  Not just Israel!

                 a.  He is to be the King of all nations

                 b.  The King of all times and places

                 c.  He is to be our King

           2.  We are the beneficiaries of this promise

                 a.  He rules over us

                 b.  He rules for us

                 c.  His kingdom goes on

           3.  His reign will be complete at His return

                 a.  When the last enemy will be destroyed

                 b.  When He judges the world

                 c.  When all detractors are dealt with

     C.  Israel will never again be Uprooted

           1.  Israel will be planted in this fertile land

                 a.  Like a tree planted in good soil

                 b.  This isn’t about dirt!

                 c.  Planted in the soil of God’s loving faithfulness.

           2.  Nothing will be able to rob it of its blessings

                 a.  Never uprooted from God’s protection

                 b.  Always in the place of blessing!

           3.  We are this Israel!

                 a.  We are God’s chosen people

                 b.  Nothing can separate us from His love
