Welcome and Reading:
John 1:1–5 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:
John 1 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”) For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known. And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter). The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
John 1:9–13 ESV
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:9–10a ESV
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.
John 1:
Genesis 1
Let there be...and God called
Day 1
-Light (separated light (day) and dark (night)
Day 2
-expanses in the midst of the waters (heavens/sky)
Day 3
-separated waters and land
(Earth and sea)
Then vegetations and trees brought forth fruit and seed, each according to their kind
Day 4
-lights in the heavens, separate night and day. For signs & seasons, days and years. Greater light to rule day and lesser lights to rule the night.
Day 5
-God created living creatures for the sea and the air.
Be fruitful & multiply and blessed them
Day 6
-land creatures (livestock, creeping things, and beasts);
Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, so that they may have dominion. Male and female he created them and blessed them: be fruitful & multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. (Earth, sea, and sky). I have given you every plant and tree, with seed for food. Every animals has green plants for food.
He saw everything that he had made and it was very good!
Rested on Day 7
Genesis 2
. God brought forth the creatures to The man to have them named.
Not good (first time mentioned) for man to be alone ( I will make him a helper fit for him)
interesting that when it comes to humanity, God references something that is not good. Temptation to say, He was surprised, that out of all the order and intention of creating this intricate world, he overlooked one thing…Not likely, its hyperbole…The literary emphasis is that humanity wasn’t meant to be alone. He was going to do something special with them, that he hadn’t done with any other aspect of creation.
The God who creates and the God who names, invites Adam into the process. Notice the more specific description of things. It’s like we got the readers digest version in chapter one and here in chapter 2, we get the artistic/literary description.
-Eden (garden of delight-- a state of gladness based on a view of favorable circumstances)
a state of gladness based on a view of favorable circumstances
Pishon, Havilah, Gihon, Cush, Tigris, Assyria, Euphrates
Swanson, J. (1997). Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains : Hebrew (Old Testament) (electronic ed.). Oak Harbor: Logos Research Systems, Inc.
speaks of gold, bdellium, onyx
Then invited to choose names for each creature. (Creative God brought him in on the creative process)
-took the man, placed into the garden of delight to work it and keep it.
-Beware of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, DO not eat of it. In this place of delight and purpose, Adam was given a choice.
But for Adam there wasn’t a helper fit for him, so a deep sleep arose and God removed a rib, to fashions helper for Adam (not out of the dust?)
But for Adam there wasn’t a helper fit for him, so a deep sleep arose and God removed a rib, to fashion a helper for Adam (not out of the dust?)
Fit for him—corresponding creature, one that he could be fruitful and multiply. One like him, was fashioned through his own nature of creation.
Here is how the man describes it:
At last! This is bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh, she will be called Ishah!, bc she was taken out Ish.
Notice how he called her by name and his name has changed as well.
Something happens, to us when we enter into relationship with others.
(Every human following, has come from the woman).
From now on they will leave mother & father, cling to one another and become one flesh.
And the man & his wife were naked and Unafraid.
Why do remind us of a story that is very familiar?
Hopefully, like me you noticed something(s) different; remembered something you forgot or saw something you hadn’t seen before.
More than that, I want to take an extended period of time and go through the familiar stories of our lives, stories that have shaped not only our faith journey, but the lives of many before us. But I don’t want to go through them with the normal tendency to engage with knowledge, rather can the recollecting and reminiscing of the stories of God penetrate and permeate in a way that moves us closer to God and one another.

**Ask if people want to share anything they noticed?**
Words spoken are every where. God was not only creating and giving life, through the naming and declaring, he was establishing a desired intent and purpose. Order and goodness. Things were functioning and relating with all of creation in way that reflected the nature and character of God.
God had a unique relationship with the man. He like the animals, was blessed to be a part of the nurturing and stewarding of the created order. Entrusted into the care of the man, was the ongoing life of creation.
I love the words in
Genesis 2:19 ESV
Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
Genesis 2:20 ESV
The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
Yet, something profound is found in the next verse
Genesis 2:20 ESV
The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
Then the beautiful picture of
Genesis 2:21–23 ESV
So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
It is in relationship with God we learn the origins of our world and the intended purposes of creation.
It is in these chapters that we discover:
God creates
God creates with His words
God blesses
God invites creation to participate in the ongoing process of life
The name God gives is a reflection our relationship with Him
This is the beginning of our story with God, it is good and it is beautiful,
Next week we will discuss the ways and implications of how creation and the created ones have been marred.
But this week I want us to focus on the simple origins of God creating our story; that we have been named; that we are blessed and invited to be a part of the process of being fruitful and multiplying the created goodness of God in our world.
Last week we talked about how God:
God creates
God creates with His words
God blesses
God invites creation to participate in the ongoing process of life
The name God gives is a reflection our relationship with Him
This is the beginning of our story with God, it is good and it is beautiful,
This morning I want to talk about the two ways that evil brought by the enemy, Satan, has turned God’s created world, upside down and inside out.
This morning we will speak to the way that evil works against creation (specifically through humanity)
Next week we will speak to the way that evil works through creation (specifically through humanity).
Read
Satan, the evil one, Evil cannot stand the goodness and beauty of God’s creation. These 7 verses are testiment of the which Satan will go to mar the goodness and beauty of God.
Notice how the enemy speaks lies and seeks to sabotage.
Notice how evil twists truth and focuses its words in a way that the woman is vulnerable (contrast the words of God, that bring life, goodness, and beauty vs. the serpent who speaks in a way that brings death)
This
Beauty & Desire & Needs; engages the emotions. God has established an order and place for these things. But evil, deceipving through emotions brings about shame, guilt, contempt.
In the process Evil Divides
Steals our innocence
Blames (does not own the sin)—where in this passage do they repent?
Can know pain and death. Desires turned in on our selves, not for the One, each other, and creation.
Renamed
-Adam and Eve
-Read the curse for each.
-Garden of Delight not accessible
Eden is destroyed:
It is named for each,
In spite of what has happened, where is God at work in the midst of evil and death?
Creature
Created ones
-Woven into this tragedy is a hope of redemption.
Creation
Woven into this tragedy is a hope of redemption.
-What has God desired for good?
How God is to bring back and return the goodness and beauty, will now have to take place within the paradigm of evil and the evil one. Death, sin, guilt, and shame have entered into the narrative.
This will be the place and the means by which God brings hope. These next few weeks we will witness how Satan and evil play out and become the dominant players in the unfolding narrative.
As we leave, how has evil sought to steal your innocence? Blame? Twist? Renamed you!
How is God working to overurn and overcome the activity of evil in the world and in your world?
What was the result
Where is redemption at work.
Blessed them—in spite of being kicked out, they are encountering the life of God as they obey his blessing & command.
