But they don’t know Jesus!

How can people who don’t know Jesus do Good?
How do people intrinsically know right from wrong?
Is it possible for an athiest or agnostic or buhdist or muslim or fill in the blank to do the right thing to be a positive influence in the world today?

The big surprise!

Genesis 1:26–31 HCSB
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female. God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.” God also said, “Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This food will be for you, for all the wildlife of the earth, for every bird of the sky, and for every creature that crawls on the earth—everything having the breath of life in it. I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. Evening came and then morning: the sixth day.
Genesis 1:26–27 HCSB
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.
Humanity was created in the image of God. This first conversation that we read in scripture had to be between someone. Let’s pick it apart a bit and then we will dig into who was having it.

Equal but different

People use the word man here as some sort of proof that men are supposed to be better than or more than or closer than women. That couldn’t be further from the truth Man here simpley refers to humanity. If you wonder about that just look at the entire verse paying attention to the fact that he doesn’t say he created him in the image of God and stopped. Male and female both created in the image of God.
From the first conversation we have God creating male and female giving them both his image, giving both his likeness.
If we want to know what God looks like if you want to konw what God looks like just turn to your right or left.

Created for purpose!

In that first conversation God stated our purpose. To take care of to tend to manage what he has created.
(a good manager vs a bad manager)
All Christ followers should be environmentalists because we were placed here to care for God’s creation.
Genesis 2:15 HCSB
The Lord God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it.

Created for relationship!

We are going to get a bit deeper into this conversation next week but I want to hit this one verse right now to show that we were created for relationship with each other and with God.
Genesis 2:18 HCSB
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper as his complement.”
This verse drills down a bit on the creation of man, God recognized the need for relationship and made male AND female. But we were created for more than just relationship with each other.
We find that information a few verses later.
Genesis 3:8–9 HCSB
Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and they hid themselves from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. So the Lord God called out to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”
Next week we are digging into this conversation, but this verse speaks volumes. Humanity at one point had a walking around together in person talking living breathing relationship with God.
That relationship with God was broken.
Which brings us to that last little bit of information…Who was God talking to?
John 1:1–3 HCSB
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created.
Man tore up the design that God had for relationship with him, but God had a way to fix it. That way was the person that was having this first conversation with the Father. The Word, Jesus…How do we know?
John 1:14 HCSB
The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
So what does all this mean? We need to remember that Humanity was made in the image of God. That God’s desire is to redeem Humanity. Not some of Humanity, not the Humanity that we are comfortable with, Not the humanity that we agree with…Expound
